The ESA WorldCover 10m 2021 v200 product updates the existing ESA WorldCover 10m 2020 v100 product to 2021 but is produced using an improved algorithm version (v200) compared to the 2020 map. Consequently, since the WorldCover maps for 2020 and 2021 were generated with different algorithm versions (v100 and v200, respectively), changes between the maps should be treated with caution, as they include both real changes in land cover and changes due to the algorithms used.

The ESA WorldCover product has been independently validated by Wageningen University (statistical accuracy) and IIASA (spatial accuracy). The WorldCover 2021 v200 reaches an overall accuracy of 76.7%. For more details please see the Product Validation Report V2.0.

    Description

This dataset contains Global Plant Functional Types (PFT) data, from the ESA Medium Resolution Land Cover (MRLC) Climate Change Initiative project. The data provides yearly data, and initially covers the time period from 1992 to 2020. It is anticipated that the dataset will be updated annually going forward.

The PFT v2.0.8 global dataset has 14 layers, each describing the percentage cover (0-100%) of a plant functional type at a spatial resolution of 300 m: broadleaved evergreen trees, broadleaved deciduous trees, needleleaved evergreen trees, needleleaved deciduous trees, broadleaved evergreen shrubs, broadleaved deciduous shrubs, needleleaved evergreen shrubs, needleleaved deciduous shrubs, natural grasses, herbaceous cropland (i.e., managed grasses), built, water, bare areas, and snow and ice.

"Plant Functional Types” (PFTs) refer to globally representative and similarly behaving plant types. PFTs can be related to physiognomy and phenology, climate (which defines the geographical ranges in which a plant type can grow and reproduce under natural conditions, and physiological activity (e.g., C3/C4 photosynthetic pathways).

All terrestrial zones of the Earth between the parallels 90°N and 90°S are covered. The PFT dataset has a regular latitude-longitude grid with a grid spacing of 0.002777777777778°, corresponding to ~300 m at the equator and ~200 m in the midlatitudes. The Coordinate Reference System used for the global land cover database is a geographic coordinate system (GCS) based on the World Geodetic System 84 (WGS84) reference ellipsoid.

The plant functional type (PFT) distribution was created by combining auxiliary data products with the CCI MRLC map series. The LC classification provides the broad characteristics of the 300 m pixel, including the expected vegetation form(s) (tree, shrub, grass) and/or abiotic land type(s) (water, bare area, snow and ice, built-up) in the pixel. For some classes, the class legend specifies an expected range for the fractional covers of the contributing PFTs and broadly differentiates between natural and cultivated vegetation. We used a quantitative, globally consistent method that fuses the 300-metre MRLC product with a suite of existing high-resolution datasets to develop spatially explicit annual maps of PFT fractional composition at 300 metres. The new PFT product exhibits intraclass spatial variability in PFT fractional cover at the 300-metre pixel level and is complementary to the MRLC maps since the derived PFT fractions maintain consistency with the original LC class legend.

This dataset was generated to reduce the cross-walking component of uncertainty by adding spatial variability to the PFT composition within a LC class. This work moved beyond fine-tuning the cross-walking approach for specific LC classes or regions and, instead, separately quantifies the PFT fractional composition for each 300 m pixel globally. The result is a dataset representing the cover fractions of 14 PFTs at 300 m for each year within the time range, consistent with the CCI MRLC LC maps for the corresponding year.

This study was carried out with the continued support of the European Space Agency Climate Change Initiative under the contract ESA/No.4000126564 Land_Cover_cci.

    Description

As part of the ESA Land Cover Climate Change Initiative (CCI) project a static map of open water bodies at 150 m spatial resolution at the equator has been produced. The CCI WB v4.0 is composed of two layers:1. A static map of open water bodies at 150 m spatial resolution resulting from a compilation and editions of land/water classifications: the Envisat ASAR water bodies indicator, a sub-dataset from the Global Forest Change 2000 - 2012 and the Global Inland Water product. This product is delivered at 150 m as a stand-alone product but it is consistent with class "Water Bodies" of the annual MRLC (Medium Resolution Land Cover) Maps. The product was resampled to 300 m using an average algorithm. Legend : 1-Land, 2-Water2. A static map with the distinction between ocean and inland water is now available at 150 m spatial resolution. It is fully consistent with the CCI WB-Map v4.0. Legend: 0-Ocean, 1-Land.To cite the CCI WB-Map v4.0, please refer to : Lamarche, C.; Santoro, M.; Bontemps, S.; Dâ Andrimont, R.; Radoux, J.; Giustarini, L.; Brockmann, C.; Wevers, J.; Defourny, P.; Arino, O. Description

The GlobCover initiative of ESA developed and demonstrated a service for the generation of global land cover maps, based on Envisat MERIS Fine Resolution (300 m) mode data. ESA and Université catholique de Louvain demonstrated the possibility to use the GlobCover system operationally by delivering GlobCover 2009, the 2009 global land cover map, within a year of the last satellite acquisition. For maximum user benefit the thematic legend of GlobCover is compatible with the UN Land Cover Classification System (LCCS). The system is based on an automatic pre-processing and classification chain. Finally, the global land cover map was validated by an international group of land cover experts and the validation reports are also available to the user community.

    Description

GlobCover is a European Space Agency (ESA) initiative which began in 2005 in partnership with the Joint Research Center, European Environmental Agency, UN Food and Agricultural Organization, UN Environment Programme, Global Observation of Forest Cover and Land Cover Dynamics, and International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme. The aim of the project was to develop a service capable of delivering global composites and land cover maps using observations from the 300 meter MERIS sensor on board the ENVISAT satellite mission. ESA makes land cover maps available covering 2 periods: December 2004 - June 2006 and January - December 2009. GlobCover products come with a thematic legend compatible with the UN Land Cover Classification System (LCCS).Data in this layer was generated using MERIS images which were classified using both a supervised (human-verified) and unsupervised (automated)classification algorithm applied at two different seasonal time steps to create land cover classes based on both spectral and temporal properties of land cover. The labeling procedure is automated and based on the GlobCover 2005 (v2.2) land cover map. Several decision rules have been defined with the help of international land cover experts to create unique labels for each class.

    Description

This land cover data set is derived from the original raster based Globcover global archive. It has been post-processed to generate a vector version at national extent with the LCCS regional legend (22 classes worldwide). The database can be analyzed in the GLCN software Advanced Database Gateway (ADG), which provides a user-friendly interface and advanced functionalities to breakdown the LCCS classes in their classifiers for further aggregations and analysis.

The data set is intended for free public access.

The shape file's attributes contain the following fields: -Area (sqm) -Perimeter (m) -ID -Gridcode (Globcover cell value) -LCCCode (unique LCCS code)

You can download a zip archive containing: -the shape file (.shp) -the ArcGis layer file with global legend (.lyr) -the ArcView 3 legend file (.avl) -the LCCS legend table (.xls)

    Supplemental Information:

This land cover product is a vector version (ESRI shape) of the Globcover archive that was published in 2008 as result of an initiative launched in 2004 by the European Space Agency (ESA). Globcover is currently the most recent (2005) and resoluted (300 m) datasets on land cover globally. Given the need of this valuable information for environmental studies, natural resources management and policy formulation, through activities of the Global Land Cover Network (GLCN) programme, the Globcover has been reprocessed to generate databases at national extent that can be analyzed through the Advanced Database Gateway software (ADG) by GLCN. ADG is a cross-cutting interrogation software that allows the easy and fast recombination of land cover polygons according to the individual end-user requirements. Aggregated land cover classes can be generated not only by name, but also using the set of existing classifiers. ADG uses land cover data with a Land Cover Classification System (LCCS) legend. The ADG software is available for download on the GLCN web site at http://www.glcn.org/sof_7_en.jsp

    Contact points:

    Metadata Contact: FAO-Data

    Resource Contact: Antonio Martucci

    Data lineage:

This land cover database is provided as ESRI shape file (vector format) and derives from reprocessing the raster based global archive, Globcover. Globcover database has undergone the following process: a) vectoralization at the national extent using ESRI ArcGis (arcinfo) 9.3; b) topological reconstruction (custom AML scripts launched inside ArcGis-arcinfo 9.3); c) simplification of areas according to a minimum mapping unit of 0.1 skim (10 ha) (custom AML scripts launched inside ArcGis-arcinfo 9.3); application of the FAO/UNEP Land Cover Classification System (LCCS) legend (24 classes globally); final processing to assure full compatibility with the GLCN software Advanced Database Gateway (ADG).

The CCI Land Cover (LC) team is proud to announce the successful development of a prototype high resolution LC map at 20m over Africa based on 1 year of Sentinel-2A observations from December 2015 to December 2016. The main objective of the 'S2 prototype LC map at 20m of Africa 2016' release is to collect users feedback for further improvements. The Coordinate Reference System used for the global land cover database is a geographic coordinate system (GCS) based on the World Geodetic System 84 (WGS84) reference ellipsoid. The legend of the S2 prototype LC 20m map of Africa 2016 was built after reviewing various existing typologies (e.g. LCCS, LCML…), global (e.g. GLC-share, GlobeLand30) and national experiences (Africover, SERVIR-RMCD). The legend includes 10 generic classes that appropriately describe the land surface at 20m: "trees cover areas", "shrubs cover areas", "grassland", "cropland", "vegetation aquatic or regularly flooded", "lichen and mosses / sparse vegetation", "bare areas", "built up areas", "snow and/or ice" and "open water". Among the Land Cover classes, two of them were largely identified thanks to external dataset: the "open water" class was based on the Global Surface Water product from JRC/EC and the "urban areas" relied both on the Global Human Settlement Layer from JRC/EC and on the Global Urban Footprint from DLR. Two classification algorithms, the Random Forest (RF) and Machine Learning (ML), were chosen to transform the cloud-free reflectance composites generated by the pre-processing module into a land cover map. The two maps resulting from both approaches are then combined either to select the best representation of a land cover class which will be part of the final S2 prototype LC 20m map of Africa 2016 or, in case of unreliable LC class delineation, the reference layer is used to consolidate the land cover classification.

This land cover data set is derived from the original raster based Globcover regional (Africa) archive. It has been post-processed to generate a vector version at national extent with the LCCS regional legend (46 classes). This database can be analyzed in the GLCN software Advanced Database Gateway (ADG), which provides a user-friendly interface and advanced functionalities to breakdown the LCCS classes in their classifiers for further aggregations and analysis.

The data set is intended for free public access.

The shape file's attributes contain the following fields: -Area (sqm) -ID -Gridcode (Globcover cell value) -LCCCode (unique LCCS code)

You can download a zip archive containing: -the shape file (.shp) -the ArcGis layer file with global legend (.lyr) -the ArcView 3 legend file (.avl) -the LCCS legend tables (.xls)

Description

GlobCover is an ESA initiative which began in 2005 in partnership with JRC, EEA, FAO, UNEP, GOFC-GOLD and IGBP.

The aim of the project was to develop a service capable of delivering global composites and land cover maps using as input observations from the 300m MERIS sensor on board the ENVISAT satellite mission. ESA makes available the land cover maps, which cover 2 periods: December 2004 - June 2006 and January - December 2009.

For maximum user benefit the thematic legend of GlobCover is compatible with the UN Land Cover Classification System (LCCS). The system is based on an automatic pre-processing and classification chain. Both of the two global land cover maps (2005/2006 and 2009) provided in the framework of GlobCover have been validated by an international group of land cover experts and the validation reports were made available to the user community. Except for the global land cover maps, a set of MERIS by-products were also made freely available through the main data distribution source, ESA Ionia Server.

Description

The European Space Agency (ESA) WorldCover 10 m 2021 product provides a global land cover map for 2021 at 10 m resolution based on Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 data. The WorldCover product comes with 11 land cover classes, aligned with UN-FAO's Land Cover Classification System, and has been generated in the framework of the ESA WorldCover project, part of the 5th Earth Observation Envelope Programme (EOEP-5) of the European Space Agency.

The WorldCover 2021 v200 product is developed by a consortium lead by VITO Remote Sensing together with partners Brockmann Consult, Gamma Remote Sensing AG, IIASA and Wageningen University.

Data description

The ESA WorldCover 10m 2021 V200 is provided per 3 x 3 degree tile, 2651 in total. Each tile contains a set of 2 Cloud Optimized GeoTIFF (COG) files corresponding to the following data layers:

• Map: Land cover map with 11 classes

• InputQuality: Three band GeoTIFF providing three per pixel quality indicators of the Sentinel1 and Sentinel-2 input data

Tiles are provided in EPSG:4326, geographic projection (latitude/longitude CRS).

Data lineage:

Resource constraints:

The ESA WorldCover product is provided free of charge, without restriction of use. If you are using the data as a layer in a published map, please include the following attribution text:
