    Description

    In this course, you will explore a variety of open-source technologies for working with geosptial data, performing spatial analysis, and undertaking general data science. The first component of the class focuses on the use of QGIS and associated technologies (GDAL, PROJ, GRASS, SAGA, and Orfeo Toolbox). The second component of the class introduces Python and associated open-source libraries and modules (NumPy, Pandas, Matplotlib, Seaborn, GeoPandas, Rasterio, WhiteboxTools, and Scikit-Learn) used by geospatial scientists and data scientists. We also provide an introduction to Structured Query Language (SQL) for performing table and spatial queries. This course is designed for individuals that have a background in GIS, such as working in the ArcGIS environment, but no prior experience using open-source software and/or coding. You will be asked to work through a series of lecture modules and videos broken into several topic areas, as outlined below. Fourteen assignments and the required data have been provided as hands-on opportunites to work with data and the discussed technologies and methods.     The primary intent of this workshop is to provide practical training in using Statistics Canada geography files with the leading industry standard software: Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc.(ESRI) ArcGIS 9x. Participants will be introduced to the key features of ArcGIS 9x, as well as to geographic concepts and principles essential to understanding and working with geographic information systems (GIS) software. The workshop will review a range of geography and attribute files available from Statistics Canada, as well as some best practices for accessing this information. A brief overview of complementary data sets available from federal and provincial agencies will be provided. There will also be an opportunity to complete a practical exercise using ArcGIS9x.     Our Co-design team is from the University of Texas, working on a Department of Energy-funded project focused on the Beaumont-Port Arthur area. As part of this project, we will be developing climate-resilient design solutions for areas of the region. More on www.caee.utexas.edu.We captured aerial photos in the Port Arthur Coastal Neighborhood Community and the Golf Course on Pleasure Island, Texas, in June 2024.Aerial photos taken were through DroneDeploy autonomous flight, and models were processed through the DroneDeploy engine as well. All aerial photos are in .JPG format and contained in zipped files for each area.The processed data package includes 3D models, geospatial data, mappings, and point clouds. Please be aware that DTM, Elevation toolbox, Point cloud, and Orthomosaic use EPSG: 6588. And 3D Model uses EPSG: 3857.For using these data:- The Adobe Suite gives you great software to open .Tif files.- You can use LASUtility (Windows), ESRI ArcGIS Pro (Windows), or Blaze3D (Windows, Linux) to open a LAS file and view the data it contains.- Open an .OBJ file with a large number of free and commercial applications. Some examples include Microsoft 3D Builder, Apple Preview, Blender, and Autodesk.- You may use ArcGIS, Merkaartor, Blender (with the Google Earth Importer plug-in), Global Mapper, and Marble to open .KML files.- The .tfw world file is a text file used to georeference the GeoTIFF raster images, like the orthomosaic and the DSM. You need suitable software like ArcView to open a .TFW file.This dataset provides researchers with sufficient geometric data and the status quo of the land surface at the locations mentioned above. This dataset could streamline researchers' decision-making processes and enhance the design as well.

    To create this app:

    1. Make a map of the AfDB projects CSV file in the Training Materials group.
      1. Download the CSV file, click Map (at the top of the page), and drag and drop the file onto your map
      2. From the layer menu on your Projects layer choose Change Symbols and show the projects using Unique Symbols and the Status of field.
    2. Make a second map of the AfDB projects shown using Unique Symbols and the Sector field.
      • HINT: Create a copy of your first map using Save As... and modify the copy.
    3. Assemble your story map on the Esri Story Maps website
      1. Go to storymaps.arcgis.com
      2. At the top of the site, click Apps
      3. Find the Story Map Tabbed app and click Build a Tabbed Story Map
      4. Follow the instructions in the app builder. Add the maps you made in previous steps and copy the text from this sample app to your app. Explore and experiment with the app configuration settings.

    OPTIONAL - Make a third map of the AFDB projects summarized by country and add it to your story map.
      1. Add the World Countries layer to your map (Add > Search for Layers)
      2. From the layer menu on your Projects layer choose Perform Analysis > Summarize Data > Aggregate Points and run the tool to summarize the projects in each country.
        • HINT: UNCHECK "Keep areas with no points"
      3. Experiment with changing the symbols and settings on your new layer and remove other unnecessary layers.
      4. Save AS... a new map.
      5. At the top of the site, click My Content.
      6. Find your story map application item, open its Details page, and click Configure App.
      7. Use the builder to add your third map and a description to the app and save it.
