    Description

A joint venture involving the National Atlas programs in Canada (Natural Resources Canada), Mexico (Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía), and the United States (U.S. Geological Survey), as well as the North American Commission for Environmental Cooperation, has led to the release (June 2004) of several new products: an updated paper map of North America, and its associated geospatial data sets and their metadata. These data sets are available online from each of the partner countries for download. The North American Environmental Atlas data are standardized geospatial data sets at 1:10,000,000 scale. A variety of basic data layers (e.g., roads, railroads, populated places, political boundaries, hydrography, bathymetry, sea ice and glaciers) have been integrated so that their relative positions are correct. This collection of data sets forms a base with which other North American thematic data may be integrated. Any data outside of Canada, Mexico, and the United States of America included in the North American Environmental Atlas data sets is strictly to complete the context of the data. The North American Environmental Atlas – Sea Ice data set shows the approximate extent of marine areas in the Arctic covered by permanent polar ice. The data originated from the Canadian Ice Service and was used in the 1:6,000,000 National Atlas of Canada Reference Map Series. It is represented by polygons showing the average minimum ice limit over a 30-year period, 1969-1999. This is a revised version of the 2004 data set.Files Download

    Description

The Canada Basemap – Transportation (CBMT) is a vector tile service that provides spatial reference context with an emphasis on transportation networks across Canada. It is designed especially for use as a background layer in a web mapping application or geographic information system (GIS). Access: Access is free of charge under the terms of the Open Government Licence - Canada. Data Sources: Data for the CBMT is sourced from multiple datasets. - Topographic data of Canada - CanVec Series - “Automatically Extracted Buildings” GeoBase (a raw digital product in vector format automatically extracted from airborne Lidar data, high-resolution optical imagery or other sources.) - Open Street Map (OSM) data available under the Open Database License (https://www.openstreetmap.org/copyright). - Official names from the Canadian Geographical Names Database (CGNDB). Geographic Coverage: CBMT covers the entire geographic area of Canada and some major transportation routes and cities in the northern States of the USA. Data Update Frequency: Updates are applied monthly to reflect the latest updates in the source datasets. Projection: Data is provided in the EPSG:3978 (NAD83 Canada Atlas Lambert) projected coordinate system. Layer Access: - CBMT is accessible via the ArcGIS Online item link with the applied style or it can also be accessed directly with the default style using the following Vector Tile Server: https://tiles.arcgis.com/tiles/HsjBaDykC1mjhXz9/arcgis/rest/services/CBMT_CBCT_3978_V_OSM/VectorTileServer - In QGIS or other applications that require the style JSON, the following link can be used: https://arcgis.com/sharing/rest/content/items/708e92c1f00941e3af3dd3c092ae4a0a/resources/styles/root.json Use Cases: This layer is suitable for use in any map as a basemap layer and can be modified to meet the needs of the project by editing the JSON style in the Vector Tile Style editor. Additional Versions: - A geometry-only version (CBMT3978GEOM) and a text-only version (CBMT3978TXT) are available. - French versions of the basemap are accessible via the Carte de base du Canada - Transport 3978 V (CBCT3978).

Land cover information is necessary for a large range of environmental applications related to climate impacts and adaption, emergency response, wildlife habitat, etc. In Canada, a 2008 user survey indicated that the most practical land cover data is provided in a nationwide 30 m spatial resolution format, with an update frequency of five years. In response to this need, the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing (CCRS) has generated a 30 m land cover map of Canada for the base year 2010, as well as this 2015 land cover map. This land cover dataset is also the Canadian contribution to the 30 m spatial resolution 2015 Land Cover Map of North America, which is produced by Mexican, American and Canadian government institutions under a collaboration called the North American Land Change Monitoring System (NALCMS). This land cover dataset for Canada is produced using observation from Operational Land Imager (OLI) Landsat sensor. An accuracy assessment based on 806 randomly distributed samples shows that land cover data produced with this new approach has achieved 79.90% accuracy with no marked spatial disparities. Description

In response to this need, the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing (CCRS) has generated a 30 m land cover map of Canada for the base year 2010, as the first of a planned series of maps to be updated every five years, or more frequently. This land cover dataset is also the Canadian contribution to the 30 m spatial resolution 2010 Land Cover Map of North America, which is produced by Mexican, American and Canadian government institutions under a collaboration called the North American Land Change Monitoring System (NALCMS). This land cover dataset for Canada is produced using observation from Thematic Mapper (TM) and Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM+) Landsat sensors. An accuracy assessment based on 2811 randomly distributed samples shows that land cover data produced with this new approach has achieved 76.60% accuracy with no marked spatial disparities. - Land Cover of Canada - Cartographic Product Collection
