    This web application highlights some of the capabilities for accessing Landsat imagery layers, powered by ArcGIS for Server, accessing Landsat Public Datasets running on the Amazon Web Services Cloud. The layers are updated with new Landsat images on a daily basis.

    Created for you to visualize our planet and understand how the Earth has changed over time, the Esri Landsat Explorer app provides the power of Landsat satellites, which gather data beyond what the eye can see. Use this app to draw on Landsat's different bands to better explore the planet's geology, vegetation, agriculture, and cities. Additionally, access the entire Landsat archive to visualize how the Earth's surface has changed over the last forty years.

    Quick access to the following band combinations and indices is provided:

    • Agriculture : Highlights agriculture in bright green; Bands 6, 5, 2
    • Natural Color : Sharpened with 15m panchromatic band; Bands 4, 3, 2 +8
    • Color Infrared : Healthy vegetation is bright red; Bands 5, 4 ,3
    • SWIR (Short Wave Infrared) : Highlights rock formations; Bands 7, 6, 4
    • Geology : Highlights geologic features; Bands 7, 6, 2
    • Bathymetric : Highlights underwater features; Bands 4, 3, 1

    The Time tool enables access to a temporal time slider and a temporal profile of different indices for a selected point. The Time tool is only accessible at larger zoom scales. It provides temporal profiles for NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), NDMI (Normalized Difference Moisture Index) and Urban Index. The Identify tool enables access to information on the images, and can also provide a spectral profile for a selected point. The Stories tool will direct you to pre-selected interesting locations.

    The application is written using Web AppBuilder for ArcGIS accessing imagery layers using ArcGIS API for JavaScript.

    The following Imagery Layers are being accessed :
    • Multispectral Landsat - Provides access to 30m 8-band multispectral imagery and a range of functions that provide different band combinations and indices.
    • Pansharpened Landsat - Provides access to 15m 4-band (Red, Green, Blue and NIR) panchromatic-sharpened imagery.
    • Panchromatic Landsat - Provides access to 15m panchromatic imagery.

    These imagery layers can be accessed through the public group Landsat Community on ArcGIS Online.

Esri recommends updating your maps and apps to use the new version.This web application enables the exploration of Arctic elevation based on the 2m resolution Arctic Digital Elevation Models (DEM) created by the Polar Geospatial Center. The app displays multiple different renderings as well as profiles of the data. In many areas the coverage is available from multiple dates and the app displays temporal profiles as well as computing the differences. The current datasets consisting of 2m DEMs, cover the Arctic from 60*N to the Pole and will gradually, and incrementally be replaced with better 2m versions as they are produced during 2018. The elevations are digital surface models photogrammetrically generated from stereo satellite imagery and have not been edited to create terrain heights. The current datasets are preliminary and are known to contain some errors and artifacts. As more control becomes available, the elevation values will be refined and adjusted. The original PGC datasets have been adjusted according to the PGC proposed correction parameters, to give WGS84 ellipsoidal heights, but available in this service also as orthometric heights computed using the EGM2008 geoid separation. Details on how the DEMs are generated and their use can be found in ArcticDEM datasets.     To create this app:

    1. Make a map of the AfDB projects CSV file in the Training Materials group.
      1. Download the CSV file, click Map (at the top of the page), and drag and drop the file onto your map
      2. From the layer menu on your Projects layer choose Change Symbols and show the projects using Unique Symbols and the Status of field.
    2. Make a second map of the AfDB projects shown using Unique Symbols and the Sector field.
      • HINT: Create a copy of your first map using Save As... and modify the copy.
    3. Assemble your story map on the Esri Story Maps website
      1. Go to storymaps.arcgis.com
      2. At the top of the site, click Apps
      3. Find the Story Map Tabbed app and click Build a Tabbed Story Map
      4. Follow the instructions in the app builder. Add the maps you made in previous steps and copy the text from this sample app to your app. Explore and experiment with the app configuration settings.

    OPTIONAL - Make a third map of the AFDB projects summarized by country and add it to your story map.
      1. Add the World Countries layer to your map (Add > Search for Layers)
      2. From the layer menu on your Projects layer choose Perform Analysis > Summarize Data > Aggregate Points and run the tool to summarize the projects in each country.
        • HINT: UNCHECK "Keep areas with no points"
      3. Experiment with changing the symbols and settings on your new layer and remove other unnecessary layers.
      4. Save AS... a new map.
      5. At the top of the site, click My Content.
      6. Find your story map application item, open its Details page, and click Configure App.
      7. Use the builder to add your third map and a description to the app and save it.

    Description

    Spatial information about the seafloor is critical for decision-making by marine resource science, management and tribal organizations. Coordinating data needs can help organizations leverage collective resources to meet shared goals. To help enable this coordination, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS) developed a spatial framework, process and online application to identify common data collection priorities for seafloor mapping, sampling and visual surveys off the US Caribbean territories of Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. Fifteen participants from local federal, state, and academic institutions entered their priorities in an online application, using virtual coins to denote their priorities in 2.5x2.5 kilometer (nearshore) and 10x10 kilometer (offshore) grid size. Grid cells with more coins were higher priorities than cells with fewer coins. Participants also reported why these locations were important and what data types were needed. Results were analyzed and mapped using statistical techniques to identify significant relationships between priorities, reasons for those priorities and data needs. Fifteen high priority locations were broadly identified for future mapping, sampling and visual surveys. These locations include: (1) a coastal location in northwest Puerto Rico (Punta Jacinto to Punta Agujereada), (2) a location approximately 11 km off Punta Agujereada, (3) coastal Rincon, (4) San Juan, (5) Punta Arenas (west of Vieques Island), (6) southwest Vieques, (7) Grappler Seamount, (8) southern Virgin Passage, (9) north St. Thomas, (10) east St. Thomas, (11) south St. John, (12) west offshore St. Croix, (13) west nearshore St. Croix, (14) east nearshore St. Croix, and (15) east offshore St. Croix. Participants consistently selected (1) Biota/Important Natural Area, (2) Commercial Fishing and (3) Coastal/Marine Hazards as their top reasons (i.e., justifications) for prioritizing locations, and (1) Benthic Habitat Map and (2) Sub-bottom Profiles as their top data or product needs. This ESRI shapefile summarizes the results from this spatial prioritization effort. This information will enable US Caribbean organization to more efficiently leverage resources and coordinate their mapping of high priority locations in the region.

    This effort was funded by NOAA’s NCCOS and supported by CRCP. The overall goal of the project was to systematically gather and quantify suggestions for seafloor mapping, sampling and visual surveys in the US Caribbean territories of Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. The results are will help organizations in the US Caribbean identify locations where their interests overlap with other organizations, to coordinate their data needs and to leverage collective resources to meet shared goals.

    There were four main steps in the US Caribbean spatial prioritization process. The first step was to identify the technical advisory team, which included the 4 CRCP members: 2 from each the Puerto Rico and USVI regions. This advisory team recommended 33 organizations to participate in the prioritization. Each organization was then requested to designate a single representative, or respondent, who would have access to the web tool. The respondent would be responsible for communicating with their team about their needs and inputting their collective priorities. Step two was to develop the spatial framework and an online application. To do this, the US Caribbean was divided into 4 sub regions: nearshore and offshore for both Puerto Rico and USVI. The total inshore regions had 2,387 square grid cells approximately 2.5x2.5 km in size. The total offshore regions consisted of 438 square grid cells 10x10 km in size. Existing relevant spatial datasets (e.g., bathymetry, protected area boundaries, etc.) were compiled to help participants understand information and data gaps and to identify areas they wanted to prioritize for future data collections. These spatial datasets were housed in the online application, which was developed using Esri’s Web AppBuilder. In step three, this online application was used by 15 participants to enter their priorities in each subregion of interest. Respondents allocated virtual coins in the grid cells to denote their priorities for each region. Respondents were given access to all four regions, despite which territory they represented, but were not required to provide input into each region. Grid cells with more coins were higher priorities than cells with fewer coins. Participants also reported why these locations were important and what data types were needed. Coin values were standardized across the nearshore and offshore zones and used to identify spatial patterns across the US Caribbean region as a whole. The number of coins were standardized because each subregion had a different number of grid cells and participants. Standardized coin values were analyzed and mapped using statistical techniques, including hierarchical cluster analysis, to identify significant relationships between priorities, reasons for those priorities and data needs. This ESRI shapefile contains the 2.5x2.5 km and 10x10 km grid cells used in this prioritization effort and associated the standardized coin values overall, as well as by organization, justification and product.     IDPR's Idaho Trails App Dataset, Web Map, and Web App have been extensively retooled for 2024.

    Feature Service

    The new App is served by this Hosted Feature Layer dataset which can be updated more frequently and on-the-fly-- changes will appear on the App and through the feature Service in real time. The newest web presentation technology under AGOL, Experience Builder, served by this dataset, will make possible several extended features to come in future updates to the App. This packaged release replaces the App created with predecessor technology Web App Builder. Web App Builder technology is scheduled to be phased out by Esri by the end of 2024.

    Under the hood

    Linear routes, closure routes and areas, and boundary area data are ported through a Web Map from the underlying Hosted Feature Service (HFS). In addition to view settings for attributes popups set in the Web Map, additional visibility option not available directly included in the HFS data or controllable in the Web Map will be further processed in the Experience App presentation.

    Underlaying Classes in the Dataset:

    One single linear class "Idaho Routes" contains all road and trail features (60,000+ route segments):

    Routes characterized as recreational in nature include "High Clearance" (previously "Jeep" treated as a road type, now as a full-width "trail" type): High-clearance, Special Vehicle Designation (mostly OHVs >50"), OHVs 50" and under, and single-track (each width class separated by seasonal and not); E-Bike; and, non-motorized and non-mechanized. Routes where vehicles either must be highway-legal (OHVs prohibited; typically paved roads), or routes requiring Restricted plate for legal OHV travel (mostly JURISDICTION = County); combined from previously-separate Layers: Highway-legal, Automobile, Other Roads (each with subcategories for seasonal access restrictions).

    (Note: Different route types are no longer kept in separate layers as with the legacy Map Service dataset. Route symbology, and selectable visibility will be filtered based on the value in the SYMBOL attribute from the above linear class within the Web Map and Experience-based App. If dynamically consuming the Feature Service, provisions will need to be made to filter to select visibility by road and trail types based on the value in the SYMBOL field.)

    "Points of Interest" (point type data) is comprised of a layer previously titled "Trailheads" and now includes the flexibility of other types of lat/lon point-based information such as links to external maps and "attractions" information such as site seeing destinations not previously included in IDPR's map presentation.
    "Emergency Route Closures" contains linear route Closures (overlays any route where a Closure Order applies in web map) "Area Restrictions" is added for areas such as defined by human exclusion Orders (polygon; usually planned annual human or vehicle exclusion areas, but can be emergency closure as well) Multiple "Boundary" polygon classes contain boundary outlines and attributes information for IDPR Regions (3), Counties (44), Wildernesses (42), National Forests and Ranger Districts (39), and BLM District and Field Offices (12), and BLM land units (700+). These separate classes reduce the data footprint of the Routes data and are joined in App popups by geographic Intersection logic.

    Bonus Material:

    Added to the App are several optional, dynamic layers via publicly-available REST services selectable for visibility:

    Idaho Department of Lands- Lands Available for Recreational Use (visible by-default) Idaho Department of Fish & Game Hunting Units boundaries and numbers BLM Surface Management Agency layer for all local, state, and federal agencies which manage public lands (accessible, and not)

Created for you to visualize our planet and understand how the Earth has changed over time, the Esri Landsat Explorer app provides the power of Landsat satellites, which gather data beyond what the eye can see. Use this app to draw on Landsat's different bands to better explore the planet's geology, vegetation, agriculture, and cities. Additionally, access the entire Landsat archive to visualize how the Earth's surface has changed over the last forty years.

Quick access to the following band combinations and indices is provided:

  • Agriculture : Highlights agriculture in bright green; Bands 6, 5, 2
  • Natural Color : Sharpened with 15m panchromatic band; Bands 4, 3, 2 +8

  • Panchromatic Landsat - Provides access to 15m panchromatic imagery.

These imagery layers can be accessed through the public group Landsat Community on ArcGIS Online.
