    Description

BackgroundThe initial preference task (IPT) is an implicit measure that has featured prominently in the literature and enjoys high popularity because it offers to provide an unobtrusive and objective assessment of self-esteem that is easy to administer. However, its use for self-esteem assessment may be limited because of weak associations with direct personality measures. Moreover, moderator effects of sample- and study-related variables need investigation to determine the value of IPT-based assessments of self-esteem.MethodsConventional and grey-literature database searches, as well as screening of reference lists of obtained articles, yielded a total of 105 independent healthy adult samples (N = 17,777) originating from 60 studies. Summary effect estimates and subgroup analyses for potential effect moderators (e.g., administration order, algorithm, rating type) were calculated by means of meta-analytic random- and mixed-effects models. Moreover, we accounted for potential influences of publication year, publication status (published vs. not), and participant sex in a weighted stepwise hierarchical multiple meta-regression. We tested for dissemination bias through six methods.ResultsThere was no noteworthy correlation between IPT-based implicit and explicit self-esteem (r = .102), indicating conceptual independence of these two constructs. Effects were stronger when the B-algorithm was used for calculation of IPT-scores and the IPT was administered only once, whilst all other moderators did not show significant influences. Regression analyses revealed a somewhat stronger (albeit non-significant) effect for men. Moreover, there was no evidence for dissemination bias or a decline effect, although effects from published studies were numerically somewhat stronger than unpublished effects.DiscussionWe show that there is no noteworthy association between IPT-based implicit and explicit self-esteem, which is broadly consistent with dual-process models of implicit and explicit evaluations on the one hand, but also casts doubt on the suitability of the IPT for the assessment of implicit self-esteem on the other hand.

    Description

The psychological underpinnings of labor market discrimination were investigated by having participants from Israel, the West Bank and Germany (N = 205) act as employers in a stylized employment task in which they ranked, set wages, and imposed a minimum effort level on applicants. State self-esteem was measured before and after the employment task, in which applicant ethnicity and sex were salient. The applicants were real people and all behavior was monetarily incentivized. Supporting the full self-esteem hypothesis of the social identity approach, low self-esteem in women was associated with assigning higher wages to women than to men, and such behavior was related to the maintenance of self-esteem. The narrower hypothesis that successful intergroup discrimination serves to protect self-esteem received broader support. Across all participants, both ethnicity- and sex-based discrimination of out-groups were associated with the maintenance of self-esteem, with the former showing a stro...

    Description

Over the last two decades, the number of people who practice activities in the natural environment has increased and the demand for teachers for these activities has grown. It is necessary to analyze the impact of different psychosocial and emotional factors such as self-concept, self-esteem, satisfaction with life and well-being, in teachers of special regime sports education, as regulated training in the spanish educational system. The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between physical, emotional and social self-concept and self-esteem; and to study the influence of self-esteem between self-concept and life satisfaction in teachers. The participants of the study were 788 teachers of special regime sports education, from the regulated training educational system of Spain. The instruments used were the Self-Concept-Scale-AF5, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Questionnaire and the Satisfaction with Life Scale. To present the results of the study, a structural equation model PLS-SEM was developed based on the theoretical framework analyzed, with an explanatory-predictive approach. The evidence showed the coefficients of determination Self-esteem (R2=0.395; Q²=0.268) and Life Satisfaction (R2=0.334; Q²=0.237), being the appropriate adjustment. The acquisition of an adequate self-concept and correct self-esteem allows practitioners of sports disciplines in the natural environment to have greater life satisfaction.

    Description

How do social cues in the immediate environment affect older consumers’ tendency to feel younger? And what is the impact of this tendency on consumption? This research investigates the malleability of older consumers’ feel-age and the underlying mechanisms by focusing on the influence of contextual social cues and the downstream effects on consumption behavior. Five experiments provide evidence that the mere presence of young social cues triggers an identity threat for older consumers; and feeling younger is a way to protect the self from negative stereotypes associated with aging. By contrast, young consumers are relatively immune to age-related social cues. Whereas the presence of young social cues magnifies older consumers’ tendency to feel younger, this effect is attenuated when the young social cues are less desirable or when the older consumers possess higher self-esteem. The greater tendency to feel younger in the presence of young social cues increases older consumers’ choice of contemporary over traditional products, especially among those with lower self-esteem. Theoretical insights and practical implications are discussed.

    Description

The aim of this study was to to investigate the effect of the level and stability of self-esteem on self-referent vs. other-referent feedback recall and to determine which of the opposed self-concept motives, self-enhancement or self-verification, will prevail in adolescents with certain type of self- esteem. In a between-subjects experimental design, 450 high school graduates and freshmen were randomly assigned to a self-referent task (n=230) or other-referent task (n=220) and their self-esteem was measured by repeated administration of the RSE scale. After personality and cognitive ability test, participants in a self-referent task were presented with a bogus feedback which consisted of statements that described a specific positive or negative behaviour that one is likely to do. Participants in the other-referent received the same information, but relating to an unknown person. Memory was tested on a surprise free recall task.

    Description

OBJETIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of self-esteem, body dissatisfaction, and internalization of the thin ideal on disordered eating female adolescents. METHODS: Four hundred and seventy one adolescents participated in this research. The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, the Body Shape Questionnaire, and the Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire-3 were used to assess self-esteem, body dissatisfaction, and internalization of the thin ideal, respectively. The Eating Attitudes Test subscales were used to evaluate eating disorder risk behavior. RESULTS: The results indicated influence of the Body Shape Questionnaire (p<0.05) and Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire-3 scores (p<0.05) on all subscales of the Eating Attitudes Test. In contrast, the findings did not show any significant influence of the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale on the Eating Attitudes Test subscales scores (p>0.05). CONCLUSION: It was concluded that body dissatisfaction and internalization of the thin ideal influence eating disorder risk behavior in female adolescents; the same behavior was not observed for self-esteem.

These two datasets formed the basis of the article: Tjew-A-Sin, M., & Koole, S. (2018). Terror Management in a Multicultural Society: Effects of Mortality Salience on Attitudes to Multiculturalism are Moderated by National Identification and Self-Esteem Among Native Dutch People. Frontiers in Psychology, 9, 721.Abstract:Terror Management Theory (TMT; Greenberg et al., 1997) proposes that mortality concerns may lead people to reject other cultures than their own. Although highly relevant to multiculturalism, TMT has been rarely tested in a European multicultural society. To fill this void, two studies examined the effects of mortality salience (MS) among native Dutch people with varying levels of national identification and self-esteem. Consistent with TMT, MS led to less favorable attitudes about Muslims and multiculturalism among participants with high (rather than low) national identification and low (rather than high) self-esteem (Study 1). Likewise, MS led participants with high national identification and low self-esteem to increase their support of Sinterklaas, a traditional Dutch festivity with purported racist elements (Study 2). Together, these findings indicate that existential concerns may fuel resistance against multiculturalism, especially among people with low self-esteem who strongly identify with their nationality. These data are referenced by:Data from Paper ‘Terror Management in a Multicultural Society: Effects of Mortality Salience on Attitudes to Multiculturalism Are Moderated by National Identification and Self-Esteem Among Native Dutch People’ Journal of Open Psychology Data (under review)
