The BABEL Polish Database is a speech database that was produced by a research consortium funded by the European Union under the COPERNICUS programme (COPERNICUS Project 1304). The project began in March 1995 and was completed in December 1998. The objective was to create a database of languages of Central and Eastern Europe in parallel to the EUROM1 databases produced by the SAM Project (funded by the ESPRIT programme).
The BABEL consortium included six partners from Central and Eastern Europe (who had the major responsibility of planning and carrying out the recording and labelling) and six from Western Europe (whose role was mainly to advise and in some cases to act as host to BABEL researchers). The five databases collected within the project concern the Bulgarian, Estonian, Hungarian, Polish, and Romanian languages.
The Polish database consists of the basic "common" set which is: • The Many Talker Set: 30 males, 30 females; each to read 100 numbers, 3 connected passages and 5 “filler” sentences (or 4 passages if no fillers needed). • The Few Talker Set: 5 males, 5 females, normally selected from the above group: each to read 5 blocks of 100 numbers, 15 passages and 25 filler sentences ( or 20 passages if fillers not needed), and 5 lists of syllables. • The Very Few Talker Set: 1 male, 1 female, selected from many-talker set: 5 blocks of syllables, with and without carrier sentences.

This new release is similar in concepts and methodologies to calculate the various growth and productivity variables as its predecessors, but it also has a number of new features; It provides updates and data for additional years and revisions of longer time-series in case national statistical institutes (NSIs) provided these. For labour composition use has been made of the micro-data underlying the European Labour Force Survey (LFS) for recent years. New investment data has been provided by the EU KLEMS consortium partners. Most importantly, a new industrial classification is used based on the new international ISIC Revision 4 industry classification, which is consistent with the European NACE 2 industry classification. The National Accounts (NA) data in the new classification is typically provided for shorter time series than were previously available in the ISIC Rev. 3 (NACE 1) classification. We back-cast time series of output and labour data using growth rates from the earlier data in the ISIC Rev. 3 classification. These imputations are denoted in grey in the new release. We have collected the available data from literature and from other more restricted databases. We try to incorporate newly published chronometric dates collected from all kind of available publications. See list of journals inspected in downloadable file "inspected-journals.xls". The database, version 24 (first version was available in2002), contains now 12888 site forms, (most of them with their geographical coordinates), comprising 15500 radiometric data: Conv. 14C and AMS 14C (12024 items), TL (997 items), OSL (461 items), ESR, Th/U and AAR (2015 items) from the European (Russian Siberia included) Lower, Middle and Upper Palaeolithic.
