    Description

    The MZG is a registration with which all non-psychiatric hospitals in Belgium must make their (anonymised) administrative, medical and nursing data available to the Federal Public Service (FPS) Public Health. The aim of the MZG is to support the government's health policy by

    • Determining the needs for hospital facilities;
    • Describing the qualitative and quantitative accreditation standards of hospitals and their services;
    • Organising the financing of hospitals;
    • Determining policy for the practice of medicine;
    • To outline epidemiological policy.

    The MZG aims also to support the health policy of hospitals by providing national and individual feedback so that a hospital can compare itself with other hospitals and adapt its internal policy.

    Description

    Low fertility rates, rising life expectancy and migratory patterns have contributed to the European population's growth and ageing. Rising demand for healthcare services hasn't been able to be matched by public hospitals as real terms budgets lag. Private hospitals have met this shortfall, catering to the rising number of people demanding expert and fast treatment. In the case of private hospitals and funding for public hospitals, hospital revenue growth is typically stable year-on-year, given the necessities of certain hospital services like accident and emergency, surgeries and maternity care. Over the five years through 2024, European hospitals' revenue is forecast to climb at a compound annual rate of 2.2% to reach €1,287.6 billion, including growth of 1.1% in 2024. The COVID-19 pandemic inflicted the biggest shock to hospital operations in recent times, with a huge boost in public funding to help hospitals boost their capacities to treat afflicted patients. For instance, NHS funding rose by over £40 billion (€46.7 billion) between 2019-20 and 2020-21. Hospitals spent substantial sums on Personal Protective Equipment during the pandemic and had to reduce funding for certain 'less essential' services to accommodate the sheer number of COVID-19 patients; elective surgeries were delayed, while the number of cancer diagnoses dipped. Private hospitals became increasingly attractive to the more affluent members of the European population, who decided the quality-of-life improvement from surgery, or other healthcare services, was worthy of the financial outlay. Digitalisation and robotics are and will be the key ways hospital operations are modernised and reinvigorated to keep up with rising demand, pervasive staff shortages and staff drain to private healthcare providers. Over the five years through 2029, European hospitals' revenue is forecast to grow at a compound annual rate of 2% to reach €1,420.2 billion.

    Description

    The dataset presents results of a descriptive cross-sectional study based on a survey, delivered through an online self-reported questionnaire. The questionnaire was distributed to managers of hospitals and other health care organisations in a purposive sample of participants to the Exchange Programmes of the European Hospital and Health Care Federation (HOPE) eliciting information on the actual use of performance data in hospitals and other healthcare organisations in Europe in 2019.
    Data collected through the online questionnaire was analysed using univariate descriptive statistics. Analyses were conducted using the R statistical program version 3.6.1. Respondents were, for certain parts of the analysis, sub-grouped by their reported managerial position and experience, as well as the type of organisation they work for. Analysis was done on a full sample of respondents, including the primary, 2019 HOPE Exchange Programme participants, and the secondary study population, 2015-2018 Exchange Programme alumni and local hosts.

    Description

    BackgroundStrategic leadership is an important organizational capability and is essential for quality improvement in hospital settings. Furthermore, the quality of leadership depends crucially on a common set of shared values and mutual trust between hospital management board members. According to the concept of social capital, these are essential requirements for successful cooperation and coordination within groups. ObjectivesWe assume that social capital within hospital management boards is an important factor in the development of effective organizational systems for overseeing health care quality. We hypothesized that the degree of social capital within the hospital management board is associated with the effectiveness and maturity of the quality management system in European hospitals. MethodsWe used a mixed-method approach to data collection and measurement in 188 hospitals in 7 European countries. For this analysis, we used responses from hospital managers. To test our hypothesis, we conducted a multilevel linear regression analysis of the association between social capital and the quality management system score at the hospital level, controlling for hospital ownership, teaching status, number of beds, number of board members, organizational culture, and country clustering. ResultsThe average social capital score within a hospital management board was 3.3 (standard deviation: 0.5; range: 1-4) and the average hospital score for the quality management index was 19.2 (standard deviation: 4.5; range: 0-27). Higher social capital was associated with higher quality management system scores (regression coefficient: 1.41; standard error: 0.64, p=0.029). ConclusionThe results suggest that a higher degree of social capital exists in hospitals that exhibit higher maturity in their quality management systems. Although uncontrolled confounding and reverse causation cannot be completely ruled out, our new findings, along with the results of previous research, could have important implications for the work of hospital managers and the design and evaluation of hospital quality management systems.
