    Description

Replication data for The international diffusion of expatriate dual citizenship, published in Migration Studies (2019) by Maarten Vink, Arjan H. Schakel, David Reichel, Ngo Chun Luk and Gerard-Rene de Groot. Abstract: While the global increase of expatriate dual citizenship acceptance over the past decades has been widely observed, the temporal and spatial contexts of this trend have remained understudied. Based on a novel dataset of expatriate dual citizenship policies worldwide since 1960 we find that dual citizenship toleration has increased in the last half century from one-third to three-quarter of states globally. We argue that these domestic policy changes should be understood in light of normative pressure in a world where restrictions on individual choice in citizenship status are increasingly contested and where liberalisation is reinforced through interdependence and diaspora politics. We apply Cox proportional hazard models to examine dual citizenship liberalisation and find that states are more likely to move to a tolerant policy if neighbouring states have done so and that they tend do so in conjunction with extending voting rights to citizens residing abroad and receiving remittances from abroad. Contrary to other studies we do not observe significant variation by regime type.

    Description

Abstract This study aims to understand the tactics that expatriates use to manage the interface between work and home. This qualitative study was performed using in-depth interviews later submitted to content analysis, with 64 male Brazilian expatriates. The results showed that expatriates manage the conflicts that may appear in relationships with social actors from the organizational (e.g., employers, customers, and suppliers) and home (spouse, children, and parents) domains by using boundary work tactics. The analysis revealed a list of tactics that allow the expatriates to integrate or segment the work and home domains. This study suggests how expatriates can actively interact with people from work and home domains in such a way that they can build and maintain better work and home relationships during the period they are living in other country. Additionally, companies should develop work-home policies that consider the preferences that an expatriate and his family have for integrating or segmenting work and home domains.

    Description

The objective of this work was to identify the factors that lead Volleyball players to change team and country to continue their career. There were 68 participants (48 current athletes and 20 former athletes), 43 men and 25 women, with a mean age of 27 years. Participants were divided into 2 research groups: G1 (International Athletes) and G2 (National Athletes). We used a questionnaire consisting of structured, open-ended and closed-ended questions. Analysis of the results was conducted through descriptive analysis and inferential analysis, both between groups and intragroup. The results showed that there was no difference between groups (p> 0.05) and that the reason motivating athletes into the expatriation process, independent of the sample group, was the search for improved salary. It can be concluded that for the participants evaluated of this study that salary was the decisive factor in accepting expatriation and that expatriation is well received by the athletes. In addition, the results demonstrate that there is a need for strategies to prepare future athletes for the expatriation process, in order to better adapt it.

    Description

Abstract Voluntary international mobility requires greater responsibility, given that there is no structure and organizational support for the challenge of living in another country. The aim of this study is to analyze the intercultural adaptation process of Brazilian immigrants and self-initiated expatriates in “off-axis” countries (less sought after/without a structured community of Brazilians) based on their reports and interactions on YouTube channels. The study employs a qualitative approach, with narrative research of four individuals. The data were collected between March and May of 2021 according to the following categories: intercultural adaptation; types of adaptation; structure and functioning of the channel. We confirmed the applicability of the theories of intercultural adaptation to analyze voluntary mobility, but with the need to consider specific aspects, such as advance adjustment actions, the influence of the channels on the focus and effort to adapt to the general environment and interact with the locals, and the emergence of individual aspects and behaviors (such as flexibility to change and self-knowledge), which were shown to be relevant for the intercultural adaptation process in voluntary mobility. As a theoretical contribution, it is understood that to use the theories about intercultural adaptation with the aim of analyzing voluntary mobility it is necessary to consider some specific aspects of this type of mobility while still in the country of origin, the weight and importance of each adaptation environment for the voluntary expatriate’s objective, and how much that experience is shared and exposed on different media with their respective impact on choices and (re)creation of meanings.
