In January 2025, the United Kingdom had more than 55.9 million Facebook users. Four years before, in September 2020, the number of Facebook users in the UK stood at 45.85, showing a 21.9 percent growth in audience size in four years. Facebook remains the leading social network Despite a recent history of controversies and user privacy breaches - not least of which being the Cambridge Analytica scandal of 2018 - Facebook has managed to remain the top social network in the UK. Facebook’s data use policy or privacy policy as it is also known, highlights the company’s guidelines concerning user privacy, information and how they are likely to be used. It also highlights the difference between public and private data and the websites and third part apps which are integrated into its services.
Federal agencies and governments have the right to request user data from Facebook. This issue was highlighted in late 2014, when Facebook came under attack from the British press for not releasing relevant information on the men responsible for the supposed pre planned murder on the British soldier Lee Rigby. In the second half of 2020, the number of user data requests issued to Facebook from the United States amounted to 61,262. This figure was higher than any other country, and India ranked second with 40,300 data requests.

The number of Facebook users in Japan amounted to approximately 21.5 million in 2019. This figure was projected to increase to about 22.4 million users by 2025. The total population of Japan was expected to decrease from more than 126 million in 2019 to less than 124 million by 2024.
The spread of Facebook in Japan
The Japanese version of Facebook launched in 2008, during the same year that Twitter entered the Japanese market. While Facebook was able to supplant domestic social networking services (SNS) such as Mixi and GREE, Twitter showed an even higher user growth in the years that followed. Social media in general became more important over the years, as the widespread adoption of smartphones made mobile communications easier than before. A further factor was the Great East Japan Earthquake that struck Japan in 2011 and disrupted phone lines in many places. The messaging app LINE was developed in a short time period as a response to the earthquake and subsequently, became Japan’s most successful messaging app. Facebook also saw a spike in user numbers during that year, which was further supported by the release of the movie The Social Network to Japanese cinemas in October 2010. Today, the most popular profiles on Facebook each have a following of several million fans.
Facebook usage
A survey from 2019 revealed that three quarters of Japanese used SNS on a daily basis. While this finding indicated a high presence of social media in peoples’ daily lives, penetration rates varied depending on the service. There also exist internal variations among the user bases. In the case of Facebook, breakdowns of the penetration rate by gender and by age group showed that the service was used equally by men and women, but much more commonly by people in their twenties and thirties than other age groups. According to a survey on the willingness to pay (WTP) for the use of SNS, Facebook users on average were willing to pay the highest amount of money among the users of major services.
It is estimated that Mexico had approximately 90.21 million Facebook users in 2022. According to forecasts, this figure is expected to rise up to 98.81 million by 2027 - an increase of approximately 8.6 million users. In the same year, 68.57 percent of the country's population were on Facebook, with almost half of those being aged between 18 and 34 years old.
Facebook usage Mark Zuckerberg's social network is responsible for more than half of all desktop social media visits in Mexico and its use through mobile phones has been adopted strongly among individuals of all ages. Besides being the majority of the platform's users, women are also more active than their male counterparts, tending to share and like content, and click on ads throughout the platform more frequently.
More than entertainment Facebook was used by more than three 60 percent of Mexican internet users as a news source, especially among those aged between 45-54 years old. However, social networks have also proven to be sources of misinformation. During the COVID-19 outbreak, Facebook was singled out as the platform through which users received the greatest number of fake news on the matter.
In 2022, Brazil was home to 150.12 million Facebook users. The number has been projected to reach 151.63 in 2027, a drop from the 152.2 million of 2025. Brazil was the largest Facebook user base in Latin America in 2022, followed by Mexico, Colombia, and Argentina.
The upper hand among heavy users Brazilians spend more time on social media than any other population in the Western Hemisphere. Their heavy use of these platforms contributes to the prevalence of Mark Zuckerberg’s social network. Through Facebook, people in Brazil try to get to know more about the world and to keep in touch with each other: around half of adults on the social network used it as a source of news.
Limits to growth? In the first half of 2022, Facebook accounted for almost 48.56 percent of all social media site visits in Brazil. Furthermore, throughout the COVID-19 outbreak – the market shares of Facebook, YouTube, and Pinterest decreased in Brazil compared with the first half of 2019.
