With roughly three billion monthly active users as of the second quarter of 2023, Facebook is the most used online social network worldwide. The platform surpassed two billion active users in the second quarter of 2017, taking just over 13 years to reach this milestone. In comparison, Meta-owned Instagram took 11.2 years, and Google’s YouTube took just over 14 years to achieve this landmark. As of January 2022, Facebook’s leading audience base was in India, with almost 330 million users whilst the United States ranked second with an approximate total of 179 million users. The platform also finds remarkable popularity in Indonesia and Brazil. Social Media usage in the United States In January 2021, Facebook was the platform on which users in the United States spent the most time per day. The average time spent on Facebook was 33 minutes, followed by TikTok with 32 minutes and Twitter with 31 daily minutes. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020, all major social media platforms saw an increase in daily usage, which then either plateaued or decreased in 2021. At the end of 2021, over a quarter of all Facebook users in the United States belonged to the 25 to 34 year age group and 18.2 percent of users were in the 35 to 44 year age group. In general, Facebook users were more likely to be female. Facebook Users Statistics: Despite the rise of many applications, Facebook still retains its status as the most widely used social media platform. The scale and variety of its user base in 2025 may surprise you, especially when compared with its competitors. As of April 2024, Facebook reported over three billion monthly active users (MAU). India has the largest Facebook audience in the world, with 378 million users documented in early 2024.

Facebook usage by device As of July 2021, it was found that 98.5 percent of active users accessed their Facebook account from mobile devices. In fact, almost 81.8 percent of Facebook audiences worldwide access the platform only via mobile phone. Facebook is not only available through mobile browser as the company has published several mobile apps for users to access their products and services. As of the third quarter 2021, the four core Meta products were leading the ranking of most downloaded mobile apps worldwide, with WhatsApp amassing approximately six billion downloads.

As of February 2025, Sweden had around 5.8 million Facebook users, whilst Denmark was home to roughly 3.45 million Facebook users. Additionally, 3.25 million people in Norway were using Meta's most popular social network. The Faroe Islands and Greenland both had under 40,000 active Facebook users as of early 2025. Social media platforms of choice in the Nordics With a plethora of social networks to choose from, users in Denmark still lean towards using Meta's Facebook. Overall, the social network had an 86 percent reach rate in the country. YouTube and Instagram are also popular, with 60 percent of internet users accessing the services in Denmark as of March 2023. Facebook's audience Although Facebook is considered as a social media platform for older audiences, Swedish users are mainly Millennials and Generation Z. In fact, Facebook finds its largest audience with users aged 25 to 34 years, with 22.4 percent of its audience falling into this age group. The service is also popular with users aged 18 to 24 years. In terms of gender, women accounted for 53.5 percent of Swedish users.

In January 2025, the United Kingdom had more than **** million Facebook users. Four years before, in September 2020, the number of Facebook users in the UK stood at *****, showing a **** percent growth in audience size in four years. Facebook remains the leading social network Despite a recent history of controversies and user privacy breaches - not least of which being the Cambridge Analytica scandal of 2018 - Facebook has managed to remain the top social network in the UK. As of July 2024, the platform had a **** percent market share, almost six times over that of X, formerly known as Twitter. Besides being the most popular social network across all age groups, Facebook and its subsidiary WhatsApp report the highest use among those aged between 26 and 35 years old. Role in political advertising Facebook has also proved to be a lucrative advertising platform, having generated **** percent of online ad revenue in the UK in 2018. This was forecast to increase to ** percent in 2021, placing the social network second to Google within the online advertising sector. Unsurprisingly, political groups aiming to capitalize on this reach have taken to large-scale advertising on Facebook. In 2019, **** million euros was spent on targeted political advertising in the UK alone, the second-highest reported figure in Europe.  

In the fourth quarter of 2023, Meta's Facebook had 408 million monthly active users (MAUs) in Europe. During the same quarter of 2022, the platform amassed around 407 million MAUs in Europe.

Facebook continues to focus on regions outside of Europe and North America, and the reward of this effort can be seen in areas such as the Asia Pacific region, where the company has seen significant gains in terms of growing the active user base. As of November 2021, ** percent of respondents reported that they did not trust Facebook with their personal data. Despite having privacy doubts, a May 2022 survey found that ** percent of adults had a very favorable opinion of Facebook, and one-third held a somewhat positive view of the platform.

In 2022, Brazil was home to 150.12 million Facebook users. The number has been projected to reach 151.63 in 2027, a drop from the 152.2 million of 2025. Brazil was the largest Facebook user base in Latin America in 2022, followed by Mexico, Colombia, and Argentina.

The upper hand among heavy users Brazilians spend more time on social media than any other population in the Western Hemisphere. Their heavy use of these platforms contributes to the prevalence of Mark Zuckerberg’s social network. Through Facebook, people in Brazil try to get to know more about the world and to keep in touch with each other: around half of adults on the social network used it as a source of news.

Limits to growth? In the first half of 2022, Facebook accounted for almost 48.56 percent of all social media site visits in Brazil. Furthermore, throughout the COVID-19 outbreak – the market shares of Facebook, YouTube, and Pinterest decreased in Brazil compared with the first half of 2019.

As of June 2025, Facebook Messenger had around ***** million users in the United States. The instant messaging service found its largest audience among those aged 25 to 34 years, accounting for ** percent of users. Additionally, the 35 to 44 year age group made up ** percent of Messenger's audience.

It is estimated that Mexico had approximately 90.21 million Facebook users in 2022. According to forecasts, this figure is expected to rise up to 98.81 million by 2027 - an increase of approximately 8.6 million users. In the same year, 68.57 percent of the country's population were on Facebook, with almost half of those being aged between 18 and 34 years old.

Facebook usage Mark Zuckerberg's social network is responsible for more than half of all desktop social media visits in Mexico and its use through mobile phones has been adopted strongly among individuals of all ages. Besides being the majority of the platform's users, women are also more active than their male counterparts, tending to share and like content, and click on ads throughout the platform more frequently.

More than entertainment Facebook was used by more than three 60 percent of Mexican internet users as a news source, especially among those aged between 45-54 years old. However, social networks have also proven to be sources of misinformation. During the COVID-19 outbreak, Facebook was singled out as the platform through which users received the greatest number of fake news on the matter.
