With roughly three billion monthly active users as of the second quarter of 2023, Facebook is the most used online social network worldwide. The platform surpassed two billion active users in the second quarter of 2017, taking just over 13 years to reach this milestone. In comparison, Meta-owned Instagram took 11.2 years, and Google’s YouTube took just over 14 years to achieve this landmark. As of January 2022, Facebook’s leading audience base was in India, with almost 330 million users whilst the United States ranked second with an approximate total of 179 million users. The platform also finds remarkable popularity in Indonesia and Brazil. Social Media usage in the United States In January 2021, Facebook was the platform on which users in the United States spent the most time per day. The average time spent on Facebook was 33 minutes, followed by TikTok with 32 minutes and Twitter with 31 daily minutes. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020, all major social media platforms saw an increase in daily usage, which then either plateaued or decreased in 2021. At the end of 2021, over a quarter of all Facebook users in the United States belonged to the 25 to 34 year age group and 18.2 percent of users were in the 35 to 44 year age group. In general, Facebook users were more likely to be female. Meta Platforms Meta is Facebook’s recently renamed parent company and had a grand total of 3.59 billion core product users by the final quarter of 2021. Other Meta products include Instagram, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and Oculus – Meta’s virtual reality subsidiary which produces VR headsets. In 2021, Meta's revenue amounted to 117 billion US dollars, up from around 86 billion U.S. dollars in the previous financial year.

Facebook user growth rate was estimated at 8.7 percent in 2020. This was the highest growth measured over the evaluated period. With the coronavirus outbreak at the first half of 2020, internet users resorted to social media to stay connected.

Facebook was created in 2004 by Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg and has seen unprecedented popularity becoming a leader among social networks.

As of January 2025, 24.2 percent of Facebook users in the United States were aged between 25 and 34 years, making up Facebook’s largest audience in the country. Overall, 19 percent of users belonged to the 18 to 24-year age group. Does everyone in the U.S. use Facebook? In 2023, there were approximately 247 million Facebook users in the U.S., a figure which is projected to steadily increase, and reach 262.8 million by 2028. Social media users in the United States have a very high awareness of the social media giant. Expectedly, 94 percent of users had heard of the brand in 2023. Although the vast majority of U.S. social networkers knew of Facebook, the likeability of the platform was not so impressive at 68 percent. Nonetheless, usage, loyalty, and buzz around the brand remained relatively high. Facebook, Meta, and the metaverse A strategic rebranding from Facebook to Meta Platforms in late 2021 boded well for the company in Mark Zuckerberg’s attempt to be strongly linked to the metaverse, and to be considered more than just a social media company. According to a survey conducted in the U.S. in early 2022, Meta Platforms is the brand that Americans most associated with the metaverse.  

In January 2025, the United Kingdom had more than 55.9 million Facebook users. Four years before, in September 2020, the number of Facebook users in the UK stood at 45.85, showing a 21.9 percent growth in audience size in four years. Facebook remains the leading social network Despite a recent history of controversies and user privacy breaches - not least of which being the Cambridge Analytica scandal of 2018 - Facebook has managed to remain the top social network in the UK. As of July 2024, the platform had a 62.8 percent market share, almost six times over that of X, formerly known as Twitter. Besides being the most popular social network across all age groups, Facebook and its subsidiary WhatsApp report the highest use among those aged between 26 and 35 years old. Role in political advertising Facebook has also proved to be a lucrative advertising platform, having generated 22.7 percent of online ad revenue in the UK in 2018. This was forecast to increase to 28 percent in 2021, placing the social network second to Google within the online advertising sector. Unsurprisingly, political groups aiming to capitalize on this reach have taken to large-scale advertising on Facebook. In 2019, 3.31 million euros was spent on targeted political advertising in the UK alone, the second-highest reported figure in Europe.  

In 2040, the number of Facebook users in India was expected to reach 970 million, up from nearly 497 million in 2023, indicating a steady growth in the social media platform's user base.

Facebook users in India – additional information

Facebook, headquartered in Menlo Park, California, is by far the leading social network in the world. Not only has the company been leading the market in number of active users – more than 1.7 billion active users as of September 2016 – but Facebook also owns three of the most popular social networks in the world, WhatApp, Facebook Messenger and Instagram. As of September 2016, WhatApp and Facebook Messenger had one billion active users each, while photo-sharing Instagram’s active users added up to a total of 500 million active users during the measured period. Social networking, one of the main online activities, shows healthy projections for the coming years, as the number of social network users worldwide is forecast to grow from 2.14 billion in 2015 to nearly three billion in 2020.

The number of social network users in India stood at around 216.5 million in 2016, and is forecast to amount to more than 336 million by 2020. From this figure, Facebook accounts for the majority of these users, as the social network is the most popular social network the country. There were about 195 million Facebook users in India as of May 2016, against about 191 million in the U.S. and 90 million in Brazil. These figures place India as the country with the largest Facebook user base in the world. The number of Facebook users in India is forecast to continue to grow in the coming years, and add up to nearly 320 million by 2021. In line with this growth in users, Facebook penetration rate in India is expected to jump from almost 15 percent in 2016 to around 23 percent in 2021.

The number of Facebook users in Japan amounted to approximately 21.5 million in 2019. This figure was projected to increase to about 22.4 million users by 2025. The total population of Japan was expected to decrease from more than 126 million in 2019 to less than 124 million by 2024.

The spread of Facebook in Japan

The Japanese version of Facebook launched in 2008, during the same year that Twitter entered the Japanese market. While Facebook was able to supplant domestic social networking services (SNS) such as Mixi and GREE, Twitter showed an even higher user growth in the years that followed. Social media in general became more important over the years, as the widespread adoption of smartphones made mobile communications easier than before. A further factor was the Great East Japan Earthquake that struck Japan in 2011 and disrupted phone lines in many places. The messaging app LINE was developed in a short time period as a response to the earthquake and subsequently, became Japan’s most successful messaging app. Facebook also saw a spike in user numbers during that year, which was further supported by the release of the movie The Social Network to Japanese cinemas in October 2010. Today, the most popular profiles on Facebook each have a following of several million fans.

Facebook usage

A survey from 2019 revealed that three quarters of Japanese used SNS on a daily basis. While this finding indicated a high presence of social media in peoples’ daily lives, penetration rates varied depending on the service. There also exist internal variations among the user bases. In the case of Facebook, breakdowns of the penetration rate by gender and by age group showed that the service was used equally by men and women, but much more commonly by people in their twenties and thirties than other age groups. According to a survey on the willingness to pay (WTP) for the use of SNS, Facebook users on average were willing to pay the highest amount of money among the users of major services.

Facebook’s global domination In more than two decades of existence, Facebook has expanded alongside the evolution of social media and has come to dominate the industry for most of its lifetime. As of the fourth quarter of 2023, Facebook had a combined 272 million monthly active users (MAU) in the United States and Canada, up by one million users when compared to the previous quarter.

Facebook user data – additional information

Facebook’s data use policy or privacy policy as it is also known, highlights the company’s guidelines concerning user privacy, information and how they are likely to be used. It also highlights the difference between public and private data and the websites and third part apps which are integrated into its services.

Federal agencies and governments have the right to request user data from Facebook. This issue was highlighted in late 2014, when Facebook came under attack from the British press for not releasing relevant information on the men responsible for the supposed pre planned murder on the British soldier Lee Rigby. In the second half of 2020, the number of user data requests issued to Facebook from the United States amounted to 61,262. This figure was higher than any other country, and India ranked second with 40,300 data requests.

It is estimated that Mexico had approximately 90.21 million Facebook users in 2022. According to forecasts, this figure is expected to rise up to 98.81 million by 2027 - an increase of approximately 8.6 million users. In the same year, 68.57 percent of the country's population were on Facebook, with almost half of those being aged between 18 and 34 years old.

Facebook usage Mark Zuckerberg's social network is responsible for more than half of all desktop social media visits in Mexico and its use through mobile phones has been adopted strongly among individuals of all ages. Besides being the majority of the platform's users, women are also more active than their male counterparts, tending to share and like content, and click on ads throughout the platform more frequently.

More than entertainment Facebook was used by more than three 60 percent of Mexican internet users as a news source, especially among those aged between 45-54 years old. However, social networks have also proven to be sources of misinformation. During the COVID-19 outbreak, Facebook was singled out as the platform through which users received the greatest number of fake news on the matter.

In the United Kingdom in January 2025, women aged 25 to 34 years made up Facebook's largest audience in the country, accounting for almost 13 percent of all users. Men in the same age bracket were the second-largest audience base, accounting for 12 percent of users. Around 11 percent of Facebook users in the UK were aged 65 and older. Facebook UK  Facebook UK Limited generated approximately 211 million British pounds in revenue during 2015, a figure that skyrocketed to 1.27 billion British pounds in 2017. According to Facebook UK, this was the result of the company commencing advertiser reseller services in April 2016. For the year 2019, the company declared a revenue of roughly one billion British pounds within the UK. In the first quarter of 2021, the company generated a total European revenue of 6.5 billion U.S. Dollars.     Growth in European active users As well as rising revenues, Facebook has also seen a slow increase in the number of monthly active users (MAUs) across Europe. During the first quarter of 2015, Facebook attracted 307 million MAUs, a figure that would rise to 423 million by the first quarter of 2021. Globally, Facebook had roughly 2.85 billion MAUs by the first quarter of 2021.

Users aged 25 to 34 years old made up the largest audience of Facebook in the United Kingdom in January 2025, accounting for 24.7 percent of all users. Overall, Facebook users aged 35 to 44 were the platform's second-largest demographic in the UK, followed by those aged 18 to 24. Dip in overall user numbers As of November 2024, there were over 55.9 million Facebook users in the UK, up from 39.01 million in September 2018, according to napoleoncat.com. However, since a peak of 57.1 million users in May 2022, Facebook's audience has decreased slightly. Facebook’s user number issues have not just been limited to the United Kingdom, with figures released by the company highlighting issues in several key markets. There was a small growth in Europe from the first quarter of 2019 to the first quarter of 2020. The company counted 305 million daily active users (DAU) in Europe during the first quarter of 2020. Facebook United Kingdom key source of European revenue Facebook UK Limited generated approximately 211 million British pounds in revenue during 2015, a figure that skyrocketed  to 842 million British pounds in 2016. In 2023, there were 3.7 million Facebook users in Ireland. By 2029, it is estimated there will be around 3.8 million users in the country. Overall, there are 4.5 million social media users in Ireland as of 2024. Facebook users in Ireland Females aged 25 to 34 years make up the largest demographic of Irish Facebook users. 13.3 percent of users fall under that category. Just 20.3 percent of Facebook’s user base in the Republic of Ireland is under the age of 25, while 49.1 percent of the user base is between the ages of 25 to 44. Facebook’s slowing growth across Europe While the general number of daily active users (DAU) in Europe continues to increase, Facebook’s growth in Europe slowed considerably compared to previous years. There was no growth at all from the first quarter of 2019 to the second quarter of 2019, and the company actually lost four million DAU during the first three quarters of 2018. The Cambridge Analytica scandal broke in March 2018, shortly before the company lost three million DAU.

This statistic represents the growth rate of Facebook users in India from 2016 to 2021. The projected growth rate of Facebook users in India in 2021 was forecasted to be around 9.9 percent, down from around 11.4 percent in 2020.

In 2022, Brazil was home to 150.12 million Facebook users. The number has been projected to reach 151.63 in 2027, a drop from the 152.2 million of 2025. Brazil was the largest Facebook user base in Latin America in 2022, followed by Mexico, Colombia, and Argentina.

The upper hand among heavy users Brazilians spend more time on social media than any other population in the Western Hemisphere. Their heavy use of these platforms contributes to the prevalence of Mark Zuckerberg’s social network. Through Facebook, people in Brazil try to get to know more about the world and to keep in touch with each other: around half of adults on the social network used it as a source of news.

Limits to growth? In the first half of 2022, Facebook accounted for almost 48.56 percent of all social media site visits in Brazil. Furthermore, throughout the COVID-19 outbreak – the market shares of Facebook, YouTube, and Pinterest decreased in Brazil compared with the first half of 2019.

As of January 2025, users aged 25 to 34 years made up Facebook's largest audience in the United States, accounting for 24.2 percent of the social network's user base, with 12.3 percent of those users being women. Overall, 9.7 percent of users aged 35 to 44 years were women, and 9.3 percent were men. How many people use Facebook in the United States? Facebook is by far the most used social network in the world and finds a huge share of its audience in the United States. Facebook’s U.S. audience size comes second only to India. In 2023, there were over 246 million Facebook users in the U.S. By 2028, it is estimated that around 263 million people in the U.S. will be signed up for the platform. How do users in the United States view the platform? Although Facebook is widely used and very popular with U.S. consumers, there are issues of trust with its North American audience. As of November 2021, 72 percent of respondents reported that they did not trust Facebook with their personal data. Despite having privacy doubts, a May 2022 survey found that 20 percent of adults had a very favorable opinion of Facebook, and one-third held a somewhat positive view of the platform.

In the fourth quarter of 2023, about 308 million people in Europe used Meta's Facebook on a daily basis, up slightly from the previous quarter, yet with a year-over-year increase of around four million users.
