    Description

    Context

The outbreak of COVID19 pushed Kaggle to launch several competitions to better understand how the new virus spreads.

The data provided by this competition is not only divided by nation (China, US, Canada...), but also sometimes by province/state/dependency/territory (California, Hubei, French Guiana, Saskatchewan...).

Although there are already several Kaggle datasets that provide population estimates by nation, I couldn't find any that provided a population estimate for each one of the constituent states ("provinces/states") included in the data for the 2nd week COVID19 Global Forecasting competition. So here they are, packaged in a super simple two-column CSV file.

    Content

Each row in this dataset is a rough estimate of the population in each of the constituent states that appear in the COVID19 Global Forecasting competition. Each row is, of course, one of these inner states. By "constituent state" I mean one of: - the 54 United States of America - the 33 Chinese provinces - 10 Canadian provinces (plus a territory, Northwest Territories) - 11 French overseas territories - 10 British overseas territories - 6 Australian states (plus 2 internal territories) - 5 constituent countries of the Kingdom of the Netherlands - 2 autonomous Danish territories (Faroe Islands and Greenland)

In total, 134 states are listed.

    Description

In March of last year, viewers spent 225 minutes watching television daily and that value reached 269 minutes one year later, in March 2020.

    Glued to the TV

Since the beginning of the coronavirus outbreak and the lockdown measures enforced as a result, television consumption drastically increased as French people spent more time watching TV. However, this growth is not merely annual; the increase in television consumption is also on the rise from week to week during the month of March 2020. This comes as no surprise as television is still one of the most-used media by the French population, in order to keep oneself updated on the coronavirus outbreak.

    Young and old alike

As lockdown measures extend to most of the French population, all age groups without exception are affected by this increase of the amount of time spent watching television. Although less fond of television on average, viewers aged 15 to 49 have increased their consumption by more than 40 minutes, while the daily viewing time of consumers aged 50 and over has grown by almost an hour and has reached a total of 6 hours and 19 minutes per day in March 2020. Over the past fifty years, the proportion of Quebecers speaking both English and French has increased steadily, from 27.6 percent in 1971 to almost half the population (46.4 percent) in 2021. The rate of English-French bilingualism, on the other hand, has declined in the rest of the country: outside Quebec, just over ten percent of people were bilingual in English and French in 2001, compared to 9.5 percent two decades later.
