This layer contains polygons that show the public rights of way. Right of way is defined as area or path that is accessible for people to pass through. Right of ways are normally found where roadways exist to allow for the public to travel. Right of way is the land that is not part of a parcel or common area in the GIS data.

This layer contains data defining the exterior boundaries of land under common ownership, typically within condominium properties within Fairfax County, Virginia. The common area layer was created to depict these areas of land that do not actually have parcel identification numbers. These areas of land are owned by a group of properties that lie within the common area. Information portrayed on this layer was initially derived from the ink-on-mylar property maps maintained by the County since the early 1960s.

This data is the source of all current parcel identification numbers and the approximate location of the parcel boundaries. These features were created through various means including conversion from mylar maps, heads up digitizing and coordinate geometry. The graphic depiction of the parcel boundaries in this layer is a derivative of the recorded documents that contain the official boundary of each parcel. To determine the accurate definition of any given parcel go to the recorded document housed in the official court recorded system, CPAN.
This layer contains cadastral information for Fairfax County, Virginia. This includes, but is not limited to the portrayal of polygonal features (such as parcels, subdivisions and easements), text (parcel numbers, street names and addresses), and symbols (parkland, schools, "double circles", etc.). This layer was initially developed as a digital copy of the ink-on-mylar property maps maintained by the County since the early 1960's.

This layer contains data defining the exterior boundaries of subdivided land within subdivisions in Fairfax County, Virginia. The Block layer was created to depict subdivided land areas within subdivisions defined by recorded documents (plats) for the County of Fairfax. The polygons portrayed on this layer define the third portion of the County's Parcel Identification Numbering system (Map / Subdivision / Block / Parcel). Blocks are indicated on the property maps using a number within a single circle and boundaries that have heavy dashed lines. Information portrayed on this layer was initially derived from the ink-on-mylar property maps maintained by the County since the early 1960s.

This layer contains the boundary of the airports as well as the runways and taxiways on the airport facilities in and near Fairfax County. The original data in this layer was captured during the 1997 data conversion effort for Fairfax County. Subsequent to that an update capture was completed in 2014 using stereo models from the 2009 Virginia State imagery. The most recent building footprints update was completed in 2022 using stereo models from the 2017 Virginia State imagery.

Locations of all authoritative site addresses for Fairfax County. These addresses reside and are maintained in the Fairfax Master Address Repository (MAR) which is housed in the enterprise GIS database. This data contains not only the address, including street name, unit numbers for condominiums, city, state, and zip, but also several other related attributes such as jurisdiction and subdivision name that the address resides. This layer is updated daily from the data maintained in the MAR layer and related tables. Updates to this data occur when address data is recorded or approved and authorized by Land Development Service, Facilitation and Address Center (LDS-FAC).
Important information about unit numbers. This data is based on ownership and address site location. Therefore, addresses for apartment buildings will just have the primary building address. They will not include the unit numbers as there is no requirement for submission of unit numbers for apartment buildings in the county. Addresses for condominiums will have the primary address as well as the unit number as these are recorded with the Act of Condominium documents and each unit has separate ownership.

This data set contains a variety of easements that are captured from recorded subdivision plats and easement plats. Once a document has been recorded then the GIS office receives that document and creates any features that are shown on the recorded document. This layer contains the easement type by category and the name of the easement as stated on the plat. For newer easements there is also the deed book and deed page. This is used to perform research on the original document in the Courts system.
This layer does not contain all easements. There are many easements before the GIS office started capturing all easements that did not get into the layer because they were not on the original mylars where this data was captured from. Also, in 2016 the GIS Division stopped capturing stormwater easements into this layer as there is different layer that contains the stormwater related easements.
Areas where volunteer groups operate within Fairfax County. The volunteer groups (also known as Community Based Organizations) are non-profit organizations that provide basic needs assistance to specific areas of the county. The groups work together to define their boundaries, often utilizing ZIP code boundaries for their edges. Some of the service areas overlap.
This layer contains the buildings that have been captured through various processes. In between these planimetric update projects the GIS office has captured building footprints from orthophotography by performing heads up digitizing from site plans. These different sources of the buildings are indicated within the building attributes as well as the type of building.
The buildings also include a building top and ground location and elevation value both in NAVD88 and NGVD29 datum. These locations indicate the highest point on a building based on the primary usable structure and the lowest elevation point of the structure. There are also buildings that may be multiple components that will make up a podium building. In this case there will be multiple polygons stacked on top of each other for a single building identifier. The difference of each polygon is the top elevation. This can be then used to extrude these structures to more approximate the look of these podium types of buildings.

This layer contains boundaries of questionable cut properties in the cadastral data. These are properties that were split but did not go through the subdivision control process. These are being monitored and when some sort of redevelopment occurs that requires a line change and new parcel number they are being corrected.

Areas of tidal wetlands in Fairfax County that fall under the Wetlands Zoning Ordinance. Development within these areas often require a wetland permit for land disturbances or related construction activities. This was captured from the 1 inch = 100-foot mylar zoning maps. There are 2 types of wetlands in this layer, vegetated and non-vegetated. Wetland boundaries are for illustrative purposes only and have no regulatory application.

This layer contains the visible pools that belong to a community but not to individual properties. This includes outdoor pools at recreation sites and outdoor pools at hotels and condominium complexes and multi-family residential complexes such as rental communities. The layer contains the name of the pool if it is known. The original data in this layer was captured during the 1997-2000 data conversion effort for Fairfax County. The pools were captured using stereo models. Since then the GIS office has captured pools from orthophotography by performing heads up digitizing. Prior to receiving the orthophotography, site plans are used to capture the planned pools. These different sources of the pools are indicated within the pool's attributes.
