    Description

This data is the source of all current parcel identification numbers and the approximate location of the parcel boundaries. These features were created through various means including conversion from mylar maps, heads up digitizing and coordinate geometry. The graphic depiction of the parcel boundaries in this layer is a derivative of the recorded documents that contain the official boundary of each parcel. To determine the accurate definition of any given parcel go to the recorded document housed in the official court recorded system, CPAN.

This layer contains cadastral information for Fairfax County, Virginia. This includes, but is not limited to the portrayal of polygonal features (such as parcels, subdivisions and easements), text (parcel numbers, street names and addresses), and symbols (parkland, schools, "double circles", etc.). This layer was initially developed as a digital copy of the ink-on-mylar property maps maintained by the County since the early 1960's.

Minor transportation contains the non-primary road polygons in Fairfax County. The original data in this layer was captured during the 1997 data conversion effort for Fairfax County. After that an update capture was completed in 2014 using stereo models from the 2009 Virginia State imagery. Subsequent to that an update capture was completed in 2022 using stereo models from the 2017 Virginia State imagery. The most recent planimetric update was completed in 2024 using orthoimagery from the 2023 and 2022 Eagleview Orthophotos.

The data in this layer provides the areal extent of the paved and unpaved driveways, paved and unpaved shared driveways, paved and unpaved parking lots, and paved and unpaved private roads, up to the edge of pavement. Minor transportation features are features that exist outside of the right of way. These features will typically have a match line where they coincide with the major transportation features.

    Description

During a ten-year observation period three 0.1 ha plots in Hemlock Overlook Regional Park, Fairfax County, VA, were regularly sampled. Student observers recorded and identified to species wherever possible, all trees with a DBH of 3cm or greater in these plots. In total there were 94 sampling events across the ten years with a total of 4,536 trees counted and measured. Of the recorded trees, the most frequently sampled trees were beech (Fagus grandifolia), with 1,681 records and the least frequently recorded trees were maple (Acer spp.) with 410 records. This dataset adds to the literature a longitudinal consistent sampling dataset that can be used for forestry and forest ecology research.

    Description

The Chesapeake Bay Preservation Ordinance was adopted to protect our local streams and one of the world's most productive estuaries, the Chesapeake Bay, from pollution due to land use and development. All of Fairfax County drains into the Potomac River and ultimately the Chesapeake Bay. In an effort to protect and improve the quality of these waterways, sensitive areas along streams throughout Fairfax County have been designated as Resource Protection Areas.State regulations require that Resource Protection Areas (RPAs) be designated around all water bodies with perennial flow. Perennial flow means that water always flows in the stream or other water body except during periods of drought. The Department of Public Works and Environmental Services conducted field studies to identify all perennial streams throughout the county and used this information to prepare a set of maps showing the location of RPAs as defined under the revised Ordinance. The maps were adopted by the Board on November 17, 2003. The data include the boundaries of the RPAs adopted by the Board in 1993 and the additional RPAs adopted by the Board in 2003. These are general locations of RPA boundaries for planning purposes and the actual limits may be further refined by detailed field studies conducted at the time a plan is submitted to obtain a permit to develop a property.Any areas within Fairfax County not contained within the RPAs are Resource Management Areas (RMAs). Together, the RPAs and RMAs comprise the Chesapeake Bay Preservation Areas.

Fairfax County
