The survey of the marine environment of Falmouth Bay and the lower Fal Ruan Estuary was undertaken as part of the BioMar Project which is funded by the European Community through the LIFE Programme. In July 1994 a baseline survey was done to map the distribution of dead and living maerl. The survey was done using a RoxAnn acoustic system supported by direct observation of the seabed using a drop-down video camera and sediment samples collected by grab. Maps of bathymetry and predicted distribution of biotopes were prepared using GIS.

Updated habitat map resulting from an integrated analysis of the dedicated 2012 survey data (CEND3/12b) for South East of Falmouth rMCZ.
A new habitat map for the site was produced by analysing and interpreting the available acoustic data and the groundtruth data collected by the dedicated survey of this site. The process is a combination of two approaches, auto-classification (image analysis) and expert interpretation, as described below. The routine for auto-classification is flexible and dependent on site-specific data, allowing for application of a bespoke routine to maximise the acoustic data available. ArcGIS was used to perform an initial unsupervised classification on the supplied backscatter image. The single band backscatter mosaic was filtered and smoothed prior to the application of an Iso cluster/maximum likelihood classification routine. For further information, refer to the South-East Falmouth rMCZ Post-survey Site Report vs. 8 (Green, S. & Cooper, R., 2015).

Mapped habitats based on observations of wildlife species that are Endangered, Threatened, or of Special Concern. This version of MDIFW's ETSC database has been simplified for "Beginning with Habitat" by showing only the most recent observation of the same species in the same habitat. This layer is updated daily. Most updates are additions of new observations. Less frequently, features/attributes are modified or deleted. Updates are more common during non-summer months (i.e., outside the field season). Static copies of this data set should not be kept for more than 1 year and ideally should be replaced monthly..
This data set consists of general soil association units. It was develped by the National Cooperative Soil Survey and supersedes the State Soil Geographic (STATSGO) data set published in 1994. It consists of a broad based inventory of soils and nonsoil areas that occur in a repeatable pattern on the landscape and that can be cartographically shown at the scale mapped. The data set was created by generalizing more detailed soil survey maps. Where more detailed soil survey maps were not available, data on geology, topography, vegetation, and climate were assembled, together with Land Remote Sensing Satellite (LANDSAT) images. Soils of like areas were studied, and the probable classification and extent of the soils were determined. Map unit composition was determined by transecting or sampling areas on the more detailed maps and expanding the data statistically to characterize the whole map unit. This data set consists of georeferenced vector digital data and tabular digital data. The map data were collected in 1-by 2-degree topographic quadrangle units and merged into a seamless national data set. It is distributed in state/territory and national extents. The soil map units are linked to attributes in the National Soil Information System data base which gives the proportionate extent of the component soils and their properties.
Extensive field surveys began in 1993 to identify, map, and document use of feeding and roosting areas for shorebirds. Polygon boundaries have been modified by the Maine DEP to align with the state 1:24,000 coastline. Polygons have been modified by Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife to include 100 ft and 250 ft disturbance protection zones around feeding and roosting sites, respectively, and to better align habitat boundaries with natural features based on high resolution, low tide imagery from Maine DMR. Areas of extensive development were clipped from the 250 ft. disturbance protection zones around roosting areas.
