    Description

    Food Balance Sheet presents a comprehensive picture of the pattern of a country's food supply during a specified reference period. The food balance sheet shows for each food item - i.e. each primary commodity and a number of processed commodities potentially available for human consumption - the sources of supply and its utilization. The total quantity of foodstuffs produced in a country added to the total quantity imported and adjusted to any change in stocks that may have occurred since the beginning of the reference period gives the supply available during that period. On the utilization side a distinction is made between the quantities exported, fed to livestock, used for seed, put to manufacture for food use and non-food uses, losses during storage and transportation, and food supplies available for human consumption. The per caput supply of each such food item available for human consumption is then obtained by dividing the respective quantity by the related data on the population actually partaking of it. Data on per caput food supplies are expressed in terms of quantity and - by applying appropriate food composition factors for all primary and processed products - also in terms of caloric value and protein and fat content.

    Description

    The indicator shows the total daily calorie supply per capita and the split into calories from animal products and vegetal products. It should not be confused with the per capita consumption of those products (calorie consumption) as calorie supply includes also losses through food distribution and mismanagement. The supply data are based on the food balance sheets (FBS) available at FAOSTAT. Data sources are primarily FAO questionnaires, national publications available in the ESS Library and Country visits by statisticians involving discussions with national experts. The food balance sheet shows the availability for human consumption for each food item i.e. each primary commodity, which corresponds to the sources of supply and its utilisation. The total quantity of all foodstuffs produced in a country added to the total quantity imported and adjusted to any change in stocks that may have occurred since the beginning of the reference period, gives the supply available during that period. Data on per capita food supplies are expressed in terms of quantity and by applying appropriate food composition factors for all primary and processed products.     For food security, we relied on the Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAOSTAT) food balance data for Pakistan from 2015 to 2022, which provides per capita food supply quantities (kg/capita/year) for various food items. A secondary merged agricultural dataset included variables such as population, total cropped area, arable area, total irrigated area, water availability, and fertilizer consumption, enhancing our analysis of food production factors.

    Description

    The particularities of agriculture, as a sector which ensures food supply, result from many factors, including the multilateral interaction between the environment and human activity. The extent of human intervention in the food production process is usually measured with the amount of capital expenditure. Therefore, the food production potential and the resulting food security depend on both natural and economic factors. This paper identifies the current status of food security in different countries around the world, considering both aspects (physical and economic availability) combined together. The variables published by FAO were used together with a variable estimated based on the author’s own methodology to identify 8 groups of countries characterized by economic development level, net trade in agricultural products, and selected variables related to agriculture and food situation. As shown by this study, the degree to which food security is ensured with domestic supply varies strongly across the globe. Domestic production provides a foundation for food security in wealthy countries, usually located in areas with favorable conditions for agriculture (including North America, Australia, New Zealand, Kazakhstan) and in countries which, though characterized by a relatively small area of arable land per capita, demonstrate high production intensity (mainly European countries). International trade largely contributes to food security in Middle East and North African countries as well as in selected South American countries which are net importers of food products. The most problematic food situation continues to affect Sub-Saharan Africa and Central Asia.

The population numbers used to calculate these statistics can be found in the Supply Utilization Accounts (SUA) dataset of FAOSTAT, as Total Population. Food availability quantities are derived from the SUA dataset. SUAs present a comprehensive picture of the pattern of a country's food supply and utilization during a specified reference period. The SUA shows for each food item - i.e. each primary commodity and a number of processed commodities potentially available for human consumption - the sources of supply and its utilization.     Description

    Livestock is one of the fastest-growing sectors in agriculture, potentially presenting opportunities for economic growth and poverty reduction in rural areas. Dealing with the important social, environmental and public health issues linked to sector growth will require solutions that embrace the way in which the livestock sector grows to meet the increasing demand for animal-source foods. It is then important to understand where growth in demand for livestock commodities is likely to occur, and how and where production of livestock commodities will be increased in order to meet it. Estimates of supply and demand for animal-source foods, provided by the Global Perspective Studies Unit at FAO, have been disaggregated spatially for the years 2000 and 2030. Demand for animal-source foods (beef, milk, mutton, pork, poultry meat and eggs) was mapped by estimating per-capita consumption and applying this to mapped population distributions in 2000. Population maps were produced for 2030 based on projected population growth and urbanisation rates and future estimates of per-capita demand applied to these. Similarly, livestock production maps were produced by spatially disaggregating the estimated production based on maps of the relevant livestock species. Methods and results are presented in the forthcoming FAO working paper “Mapping Supply and Demand for Animal-Source Foods to 2030 (by T.P. Robinson and F. Pozzi, 2011). Grids and tabular data are distributed here by livestock product and by continent.

    The aim of this work was to offer an ecological alternative to conventional observational studies and identify factors potentially associated with cancer incidence in Europe. The incidence of 24 types of cancer in 39 European countries (2012) was compared with a long-term mean supply of 68 food items from the FAOSTAT database (1993–2011) and some other variables such as smoking, body mass index, raised cholesterol, and socioeconomic indicators. In addition to simple Pearson linear correlations, the data were analyzed via factor analyses and penalized regression methods. This comparison identified two main groups of cancers that are characteristically associated with the same variables. The first group consists of cancers of the prostate, breast, white blood cells, and melanoma. Their incidence increases with rising gross domestic product (GDP) per capita, a prevalence of raised cholesterol and a high intake of animal products. The second group includes primarily cancers of the digestive tract and is most consistently correlated with alcoholic beverages, lard, and eggs. In addition, we found specific correlations between certain variables and some other types of cancer (smoking—lung and larynx cancer; low GDP per capita and high carbohydrate consumption—stomach and cervical cancer; tea drinking—esophageal cancer; maize consumption and wine drinking—liver cancer). The documented findings often remarkably agree with the current scientific consensus, and when combined with evidence based on different methodologies, they can further extend our knowledge of the etiology of cancer. In addition, our study also identifies several foods with possible preventive effects and indicates that various dairy products may markedly differ in their relationship to cancer incidence. All these data can potentially be of fundamental importance for clinical practice and the survival of cancer patients.
