    From 2000 onwards, the total area of land in U.S. farms has decreased annually, aside from a small increase in 2012. Over the time period displayed, the total farmland area has decreased by over 66 million acres, reaching a total of 876.5 million acres as of 2024. Farming in the U.S. Not only has the land for farming been decreasing in the U.S., but so has the total number of farms. From 2000 to 2021, the number of farms in the U.S. decreased from about 2.17 million farms in 2000 to just under 1.9 million in 2023. Texas has more than double the number of farms compared to other U.S. states, with 231,000 farms in 2023. U.S. agricultural exports The U.S. is known for agriculture production and is the leading exporter of agricultural products worldwide. The total U.S. agricultural exports were valued at over 178 billion U.S. dollars in 2023. Over 4.8 billion dollars’ worth of agricultural exports came from fresh or processed vegetables in 2022.

    The total area of cropland in the United States has not changed significantly over the last several years, with only a slight decrease from ***** million acres in 2012 to around ***** million acres in 2018. The largest decrease in area during that time period occurred between 2014 and 2015. Crop Diversity in the United States A significant portion of the United States economy is rooted in agriculture. As a large country with a diverse and varied climate, the United States is perfectly suited to producing a huge variety of crops. For instance, much of the tobacco produced in the United States originates from North Carolina, Kentucky, and Virginia. However, when it comes to fresh vegetables, California had by far the highest production volume of any U.S. state as of 2018. Facts about U.S. Farms As the largest state in the continental United States, Texas also has the highest number of farms of any U.S. state, at *** thousand in 2018. Missouri came in second place at ** thousand farms in that year. Operating and maintaining a farm in the United States is labor intensive, with many different costs and expenses that must be considered in order to keep the farm profitable.     Description

    Farmland classification identifies map units as prime farmland, farmland of statewide importance, farmland of local importance, or unique farmland. It identifies the location and extent of the soils that are best suited to food, feed, fiber, forage, and oilseed crops. NRCS policy and procedures on prime and unique farmlands are published in the "Federal Register," Vol. 43, No. 21, January 31, 1978.This data set is a digital soil survey and generally is the mostdetailed level of soil geographic data developed by the NationalCooperative Soil Survey. The information was prepared by digitizingmaps, by compiling information onto a planimetric correct baseand digitizing, or by revising digitized maps using remotelysensed and other information.This data set consists of georeferenced digital map data andcomputerized attribute data. The map data are in a soil survey areaextent format and include a detailed, field verified inventoryof soils and miscellaneous areas that normally occur in a repeatablepattern on the landscape and that can be cartographically shown atthe scale mapped. The soil map units are linked to attributes in theNational Soil Information System relational database, which givesthe proportionate extent of the component soils and their properties.

    The Farmland Protection Policy Act, part of the 1981 Farm Bill, is intended to limit federal activities that contribute to the unnecessary conversion of farmland to other uses. The law applies to construction projects funded by the federal government such as highways, airports, and dams, and to the management of federal lands. As part of the implementation of this law, the Natural Resources Conservation Service identifies high quality agricultural soils as prime farmland, unique farmland, and land of statewide or local importance. Each category may contain one or more limitations such as Prime Farmland if Irrigated.     The average size of farms in the United States has seen a steady increase over the last decade. In 2024, the average farm size reached 466 acres, up from 418 acres in 2007. Between 2006 and 2007 there was a sudden drop in average farm size, but in recent years it has recovered and once again reached the same levels as its peak in 2006. Agriculture in the United States In 2023, there were about 1.9 million farms in the United States, down from 2.2 million in 2007. It appears that as average farm size has increased, the number of individual farms in the United States has decreased. Texas is home to the highest number of farms of any U.S. state, with 231,000 farms as of 2023. Major crops in the United States The United States produces a wide variety of crops. Though the production volumes of some major crops, such as wheat, have fluctuated considerably since 2000, the production of vegetables for processing has been on the rise in recent years. Grapes, apples, and oranges are the most produced fruits in the United States, with the majority of grapes being grown in California.

    Measurement technique
    The data presented in this dataset is derived from the latest U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2017-2021 5-Year Estimates. To measure the two variables, namely (a) population and (b) population as a percentage of the total population, we initially analyzed and categorized the data for each of the age groups. For age groups we divided it into roughly a 5 year bucket for ages between 0 and 85. For over 85, we aggregated data into a single group for all ages.     About this dataset

    Context

    The dataset tabulates the Farmland population distribution across 18 age groups. It lists the population in each age group along with the percentage population relative of the total population for Farmland. The dataset can be utilized to understand the population distribution of Farmland by age. For example, using this dataset, we can identify the largest age group in Farmland.

    Key observations

    The largest age group in Farmland, IN was for the group of age 20-24 years with a population of 148 (10.99%), according to the 2021 American Community Survey. At the same time, the smallest age group in Farmland, IN was the 85+ years with a population of 10 (0.74%). Source: U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2017-2021 5-Year Estimates.

    The US crop services industry faces intensified contraction through 2025, as lower crop prices and heightened market uncertainty dampen farmer demand for services. Over the past five years, significant declines in corn, wheat and cotton prices, combined with extreme weather disruptions, have forced service providers to contend with minimal revenue growth and shrinking profit. Providers have responded to depressed market activity and climate-driven volatility by deferring purchases, controlling costs and aggressively managing their workforce. While the organic crop segment attracted attention, the overall market remains challenged by stringent regulations and high certification barriers. Throughout this period, the industry’s average profit share fell to 6.1%. Industry revenue contracted at a -2.0% CAGR between 2020 and 2025, with revenue falling 0.5% in 2025 to $32.4 billion. Despite near-record crop production levels, the industry continues to face downward pressure from excess global stocks and persistently low prices, which reduce farm income and limit service spending. Providers serving farmers that produce major staple crops, such as corn, soybeans and cotton, have been adapting by offering enhanced services and cost-effective management solutions. Unpredictable weather, exacerbated by climate change, generated sharp, region-specific swings in service demand. Labor-intensive segments have benefited from the growing demand for contract labor and postharvest services, although rising wages and skilled operator shortages continue to put pressure on profit. This increase in labor expenses, compounded by restrictive immigration policies, poses a challenge to maintaining profitability as many service providers struggle to pass on rising wages and high purchase costs to their clients. These trends highlight how crop prices, input costs, climate patterns and regulatory changes shape the landscape of the crop services industry. Looking ahead, the outlook for crop services signals a stabilization and modest recovery in performance, driven by a shift toward technology-driven efficiencies and climate-adaptive service offerings. Providers investing in automation, precision agriculture and climate resilience will be well-positioned to capture value as biofuel mandates expand and farmers seek strategies to withstand price volatility and weather-related disruptions. Although traditional service segments may see only gradual improvement, niche providers that expand into premium advisory, technology and labor solutions stand to benefit over the next cycle. The industry is projected to have a 0.6% CAGR from 2025 to 2030, reaching $33.5 billion in revenue by the end of the period, with profit forecast to remain steady at 6.2% over the next five years.

    Measurement technique
    The data presented in this dataset is derived from the latest U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2017-2021 5-Year Estimates. To measure the three variables, namely (a) male population, (b) female population and (b) total population, we initially analyzed and categorized the data for each of the age groups. For age groups we divided it into roughly a 5 year bucket for ages between 0 and 85. For over 85, we aggregated data into a single group for all ages.     Description

    This EnviroAtlas data set depicts estimates for mean cash rent paid for land by farmers, sorted by county for irrigated cropland, non-irrigated cropland, and pasture by for most of the conterminous US. This data comes from national surveys which includes approximately 240,000 farms and applies to all crops. According to the USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture) National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), these surveys do not include land rented for a share of the crop, on a fee per head, per pound of gain, by animal unit month (AUM), rented free of charge, or land that includes buildings such as barns. For each land use category with positive acres, respondents are given the option of reporting rent per acre or total dollars paid. This dataset was produced by the US EPA to support research and online mapping activities related to EnviroAtlas. EnviroAtlas (https://www.epa.gov/enviroatlas) allows the user to interact with a web-based, easy-to-use, mapping application to view and analyze multiple ecosystem services for the contiguous United States. The dataset is available as downloadable data (https://edg.epa.gov/data/Public/ORD/EnviroAtlas) or as an EnviroAtlas map service. Description

From 2000 onwards, the total area of land in U.S. farms has decreased annually, aside from a small increase in 2012. Over the time period displayed, the total farmland area has decreased by over 66 million acres, reaching a total of 876.5 million acres as of 2024. Farming in the U.S. Not only has the land for farming been decreasing in the U.S., but so has the total number of farms. From 2000 to 2021, the number of farms in the U.S. decreased from about 2.17 million farms in 2000 to just under 1.9 million in 2023. Texas has more than double the number of farms compared to other U.S. states, with 231,000 farms in 2023. U.S. agricultural exports The U.S. is known for agriculture production and is the leading exporter of agricultural products worldwide. The total U.S. agricultural exports were valued at over 178 billion U.S. dollars in 2023. Over 4.8 billion dollars’ worth of agricultural exports came from fresh or processed vegetables in 2022.
