    Context

Fast food is a type of mass-produced food designed for commercial resale, with a strong priority placed on speed of service. It is a commercial term, limited to food sold in a restaurant or store with frozen, preheated, or precooked ingredients and served in packaging for take-out/take-away. Fast food was created as a commercial strategy to accommodate large numbers of busy commuters, travelers, and wage workers. In 2018, the fast food industry was worth an estimated $570 billion globally.

The fastest form of "fast food" consists of pre-cooked meals which reduce waiting periods to mere seconds. Other fast food outlets, primarily hamburger outlets such as McDonald's, use mass-produced, pre-prepared ingredients (bagged buns and condiments, frozen beef patties, vegetables that are pre-washed, pre-sliced, or both; etc.) and cook the meat and french fries fresh, before assembling "to order".

Fast food restaurants are traditionally distinguished by the drive-through. Outlets may be stands or kiosks, which may provide no shelter or seating, or fast food restaurants (also known as quick service restaurants). Franchise operations that are part of restaurant chains have standardized foodstuffs shipped to each restaurant from central locations.

U.S. fast food restaurant industry - additional information

The largest share of the fast food industry in the United States in 2013 was made up of on-premises limited-service restaurants. Drive-thrus and take-out establishments also constituted a large share at 34.4 percent and 18.1 percent respectively. In 2013, there were 232,611 fast food establishments in the U.S. This figure was forecasted to rise by more than 14,500 by 2018, potentially creating 124,367 new jobs in the industry.

In 2013, the annual revenue of the U.S. fast food restaurant industry reached 191.03 billion U.S. dollars. Only 3.3 percent of that figure was retained by the industry as profit. Almost a quarter of the industry’s revenue was spent on wages with the average fast food employee earning an annual salary of around 12,800 U.S. dollars. The already-low salaries of fast food workers decreased year over year from 2010 to 2013, sparking strikes and protests over low wages, such as those seen throughout 2013 and 2014. Despite the tensions, U.S. consumers were not deterred.

In November 2013, 82.6 percent of U.S. consumers admitted to visiting quick service restaurants at least once a week, with almost half visiting for lunch and just under a quarter visiting for their evening meal. Young consumers supported this trend too – 43 percent of U.S. teenagers prefer to eat at quick service restaurants.

The Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future (CLF) obtained the food permit list from the Baltimore City Health Department in August 2011, which includes all sites that sell food, such as stores, restaurants and temporary locations such as farmers' market stands and street carts. The restaurants were grouped into three categories, including full service restaurants, fast food chains and carryouts. Carryout and fast food chain restaurants were extracted from the restaurant layer and spatially joined with the 2010 Community Statistical Area (CSA) data layer, provided by BNIA-JFI. The prepared foods density, per 1,000 people, was calculated for each CSA using the CSA's population and the total number of carryout and fast food restaurants, including vendors selling prepared foods in public markets, in each CSA. The objective of the National Neighborhood Data Archive (NaNDA) is to create measures of neighborhood context that impact clinical, social, and psychological health and healthy aging outcomes. This dataset contains measures of the number and per capita density of fast-food restaurants per United States census tract from 2006 through 2015. Fast-food restaurants are those classified as “limited-service restaurants” under the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS code 722513). According to the NAICS website, code 722513 “comprises establishments primarily engaged in providing food services (except snack and nonalcoholic beverage bars) where patrons generally order or select items and pay before eating.” Examples include pizza delivery shops, fast-food restaurants, and takeout sandwich shops.

    Starbucks tops restaurant brands worldwide

Starbucks is a coffee company and global coffee house chain based in the United States. The company opened its first store in Seattle in 1971 and rapidly expanded globally. As of 2022, the number of Starbucks stores reached nearly 36 thousand locations worldwide. These stores play an essential role in Starbucks' success and appeal. Not only can customers meet and enjoy their drinks inside, but they can also use the space to work remotely. Furthermore, the company has also revamped the image of to-go beverages. As photos of celebrities carrying branded cups in various sizes have flooded the internet in recent years, holding a Starbucks cup has become somewhat of a status symbol to many consumers – even though the product might not stand out from other beverages in terms of quality.

    Quick service restaurant giant: McDonald’s

In 2023, McDonald's was one of the largest companies worldwide by market capitalization. The company, whose logo with the golden arches is recognizable around the world, has been dominating the fast-food scene for many decades. Some of the fast-food franchise's most well-known celebrity endorsements over the years have included singers, actors, and athletes like Kobe Bryant, Tony Hawk, and K-pop group BTS. In 2022, the quick service restaurant (QSR) chain’s global advertising spending amounted to 400 million dollars.

Description
