    Description

In 2023, there were about 15.09 million children living with a single mother in the United States, and about 3.05 million children living with a single father. The number of children living with a single mother is down from its peak in 2012, and the number of children living with a single father is down from its peak in 2005.

Marriage and divorce in the United States

Despite popular opinion in the United States that “half of all marriages end in divorce,” the divorce rate in the U.S. has fallen significantly since 1992. The marriage rate, which has also been decreasing since the 1990s, was still higher than the divorce rate in 2021. Half of all marriages may not end in divorce, but it does seem that fewer people are choosing to get married in the first place.

    New family structures

In addition to a falling marriage rate, fewer people in the U.S. have children under the age of 18 living in the house in comparison to 1970. Over the past decade, the share of families with children under 18, whether that be married couples or single parents, has stayed mostly steady, although the number of births in the U.S. has also fallen.

    Description

The number of single parents housing underage children in Germany has been increasing with figures for single fathers amounting to *** thousand in 2018. In comparison, the number of single mothers with underage children amounted to roughly *** million that year, a decrease compared to the previous years, in which the number amounted to almost *** million.

    Single parents

General statistics on households with children in Germany show that most families had *** child, though it is not always possible to determine whether this was a household with *** parent or ***. Reasons for being a single parent may vary. It may be due to a court-appointed decision after a divorce, the death of a partner or other circumstances which might have led to parenting a child or children alone. When considering single mothers, additional reasons may include having children outside of a relationship or biological fathers refusing to be involved in raising children. These are only a few examples. As far as families with underage children are concerned, most German households had *** children under the age of 18.

    Child benefits

In many ways, Germany is a country which encourages and supports the population in having children, also financially. Monthly child benefit payments increase with more offspring. Single parents are also eligible for an alimony advance until their child turns **, if not being financially supported by the second parent.

    Description

Background: - The plight of orphans, exacerbated by conflict, disease, and socioeconomic factors, remains a pressing global issue, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. Nigeria, notably impacted by the HIV/AIDS epidemic, terrorism, and natural disasters, has witnessed a substantial increase in orphan populations. These children face severe challenges, including child abuse, malnutrition, limited access to education, stigmatization, and a range of psychological and behavioral disorders. Despite some interventions, orphanages primarily address material needs, often neglecting comprehensive medical, social, and psychosocial support. This study explores the behavioral patterns of orphans in Kaduna, Nigeria, and examines how their medical and social challenges compare across various orphanages.

Methodology: - A cross-sectional, comparative analysis was conducted among 100 orphans from selected orphanages in Kaduna. Data were collected through interviewer-administered questionnaires assessing socio-demographics, medical conditions, behavioral patterns, stigma, psychosocial status, and coping strategies.

Results: - The mean age of respondents was 10 years, with 68% being male. Nutritional issues were prevalent, with 53.7% classified as underweight despite 54.9% reportedly consuming balanced diets. Medical concerns were significant, with 33.7% showing clinical signs of illness and 46.7% not fully immunized. Behavioral issues were prominent, including hyperactivity symptoms (27.0%), enuresis (22.3%), and depressive symptoms (1.8%). Socially, most respondents (83.3%) reported positive peer relationships, though bullying (11.4%) and stigmatization (9%) were also observed. Educational access was generally high, with only 2.2% not attending school. However, social support systems varied, with 35.2% reporting strong support and 46.8% adapting their goals as a coping mechanism.

Conclusion: - The findings highlight the complex medical and behavioral challenges faced by orphans in Kaduna's orphanages, underscoring the need for integrated interventions that provide medical, psychosocial, and educational support. A holistic approach is crucial to improving their overall well-being and future prospects.

    Description

    Abstract

There are a range of questions that had not been unanswered regarding interventions to address the prevalence and vulnerability of OVCs in African countries including Kenya. Questions have been raised as to whether interventions should focus specifically on OVCs, or whether they should address poverty and vulnerability in general. Similarly, the choice of the type of intervention, be it cash transfers, education-enhancing measures, or health care is also very important to ensure that scarce resources are utilized in a most effective manner.

This project aimed to provide evidence to inform current and future initiatives for OVCs in poor urban areas. Data from the Nairobi Urban Health and Demographic Surveillance System (NUHDSS) and an additional module to assess the psychosocial wellbeing of OVCs were used, a work program comprising the identification of qualifying beneficiaries and assessment of their economic welfare as well as of the targeting methods was carried out.

The specific objectives of the project were to: conduct regression analyses to explain child welfare indicators (including the psycho-social wellbeing of OVC, a research area that had been untouched) and applied a reliable and valid method of proxy means testing (PMT) to identify households for interventions based on their income or other related socio-economic status indicator.

    Geographic coverage

Two informal settlements, Korogocho and Viwandani, in Nairobi City (the capital city) of Kenya.

    Analysis unit

The unit of analysis is the child

CAREGIVER: Background, Schooling details, Health status and seeking behaviour, Food intake, Involvement in income generating activities, Household relationships

NB: All questionnaires and modules are provided as external resources

    Cleaning operations

Data editing took place at a number of stages throughout the processing, including:

    a) Office editing and coding

    b) During data entry

    c) Structure checking and completeness

    d) Secondary editing

    Response rate

There were 9,029 children aged 6-14 years, including 1,218 orphans, 7,609 non-orphans and 202 with unknown status. For the psychosocial survey a random sample of 2,402; 1,202 of these orphans and 1,202 non-orphans was selected from the NUHDSS data

    Description

AIDS deaths could have a major impact on economic development by affecting the human capital accumulation of the next generation. We estimate the impact of parent death on primary school participation using an unusual five-year panel data set of over 20,000 Kenyan children. There is a substantial decrease in school participation following a parent death and a smaller drop before the death (presumably due to pre-death morbidity). Estimated impacts are smaller in specifications without individual fixed effects, suggesting that estimates based on cross-sectional data are biased toward zero. Effects are largest for children whose mothers died and, in a novel finding, for those with low baseline academic performance.
