Social Media usage in the United States In January 2021, Facebook was the platform on which users in the United States spent the most time per day. The average time spent on Facebook was 33 minutes, followed by TikTok with 32 minutes and Twitter with 31 daily minutes. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020, all major social media platforms saw an increase in daily usage, which then either plateaued or decreased in 2021. At the end of 2021, over a quarter of all Facebook users in the United States belonged to the 25 to 34 year age group and 18.2 percent of users were in the 35 to 44 year age group. In general, Facebook users were more likely to be female. Meta Platforms Meta is Facebook’s recently renamed parent company and had a grand total of 3.59 billion core product users by the final quarter of 2021. This figure was higher than any other country, and India ranked second with 40,300 data requests.

The number of Facebook users in Hungary amounted to 7.11 million as of November 2024, making Facebook the most widely used social media platform in the country. The highest number of users was recorded in March 2022 at 7.43 million people. Facebook user demographics The Hungarian version of Facebook was launched in 2008 and quickly became an almost essential part of people’s lives. As of 2023, approximately 63 percent of Hungarians had a Facebook account. The social media platform has been nearly equally popular with both genders, recording a slightly higher share of female users. Furthermore, in 2023, most Hungarian Facebook users were between the ages of 25 to 34 years old, while the second-biggest user group consisted of people between 35 and 44 years. Facebook Messenger user demographics Messenger, the messaging platform developed by Facebook in 2008, can be considered the primary channel of communication for most Hungarians. In January 2023, Facebook Messenger had approximately 5.6 million registered users in the country. The majority of these users were men between the ages of 25 and 35 years, while women of the same age constituted the second-largest age group.

The number of Facebook users in Japan amounted to approximately 21.5 million in 2019. This figure was projected to increase to about 22.4 million users by 2025. The total population of Japan was expected to decrease from more than 126 million in 2019 to less than 124 million by 2024.

The spread of Facebook in Japan

The Japanese version of Facebook launched in 2008, during the same year that Twitter entered the Japanese market. While Facebook was able to supplant domestic social networking services (SNS) such as Mixi and GREE, Twitter showed an even higher user growth in the years that followed. Social media in general became more important over the years, as the widespread adoption of smartphones made mobile communications easier than before. A further factor was the Great East Japan Earthquake that struck Japan in 2011 and disrupted phone lines in many places. The messaging app LINE was developed in a short time period as a response to the earthquake and subsequently, became Japan’s most successful messaging app. Facebook also saw a spike in user numbers during that year, which was further supported by the release of the movie The Social Network to Japanese cinemas in October 2010. Today, the most popular profiles on Facebook each have a following of several million fans.

Facebook usage

A survey from 2019 revealed that three quarters of Japanese used SNS on a daily basis. While this finding indicated a high presence of social media in peoples’ daily lives, penetration rates varied depending on the service. There also exist internal variations among the user bases. In the case of Facebook, breakdowns of the penetration rate by gender and by age group showed that the service was used equally by men and women, but much more commonly by people in their twenties and thirties than other age groups. According to a survey on the willingness to pay (WTP) for the use of SNS, Facebook users on average were willing to pay the highest amount of money among the users of major services.

As of January 2024, Sweden had around 5.65 million Facebook users, whilst Denmark was home to roughly 3.4 million Facebook users. Additionally, 3.15 million people in Norway were using Meta's most popular social network. The Faroe Islands and Greenland both had under 40,000 active Facebook users as of early 2024. Social media platforms of choice in the Nordics With a plethora of social networks to choose from, users in Denmark still lean towards using Meta's Facebook. Overall, the social network had an 86 percent reach rate in the country. YouTube and Instagram are also popular, with 60 percent of internet users accessing the services in Denmark as of March 2023. Facebook's audience Although Facebook is considered as a social media platform for older audiences, Swedish users are mainly Millennials and Generation Z. In fact, Facebook finds its largest audience with users aged 25 to 34 years, with 22.4 percent of its audience falling into this age group. The service is also popular with users aged 18 to 24 years. In terms of gender, women accounted for 53.5 percent of Swedish users.

In January 2025, the United Kingdom had more than 55.9 million Facebook users. Four years before, in September 2020, the number of Facebook users in the UK stood at 45.85, showing a 21.9 percent growth in audience size in four years. Facebook remains the leading social network Despite a recent history of controversies and user privacy breaches - not least of which being the Cambridge Analytica scandal of 2018 - Facebook has managed to remain the top social network in the UK. As of July 2024, the platform had a 62.8 percent market share, almost six times over that of X, formerly known as Twitter. Besides being the most popular social network across all age groups, Facebook and its subsidiary WhatsApp report the highest use among those aged between 26 and 35 years old. Role in political advertising Facebook has also proved to be a lucrative advertising platform, having generated 22.7 percent of online ad revenue in the UK in 2018. This was forecast to increase to 28 percent in 2021, placing the social network second to Google within the online advertising sector. Unsurprisingly, political groups aiming to capitalize on this reach have taken to large-scale advertising on Facebook. In 2019, 3.31 million euros was spent on targeted political advertising in the UK alone, the second-highest reported figure in Europe.

Users aged 25 to 34 years old made up the largest audience of Facebook in the United Kingdom in January 2025, accounting for 24.7 percent of all users. Overall, Facebook users aged 35 to 44 were the platform's second-largest demographic in the UK, followed by those aged 18 to 24. Dip in overall user numbers As of November 2024, there were over 55.9 million Facebook users in the UK, up from 39.01 million in September 2018, according to napoleoncat.com. However, since a peak of 57.1 million users in May 2022, Facebook's audience has decreased slightly. Facebook’s user number issues have not just been limited to the United Kingdom, with figures released by the company highlighting issues in several key markets. There was a small growth in Europe from the first quarter of 2019 to the first quarter of 2020. The company counted 305 million daily active users (DAU) in Europe during the first quarter of 2020. Facebook United Kingdom key source of European revenue Facebook UK Limited generated approximately 211 million British pounds in revenue during 2015, a figure that skyrocketed  to 842 million British pounds in 2016. According to Facebook UK, this was the results of the company commencing advertiser reseller services in April 2016. In 2019, Facebook UK Limited revenue reached roughly one billion British pounds. In the third quarter of 2024, the company’s total European revenue reached over 9.49 billion U.S. dollars 

In 2022, Brazil was home to 150.12 million Facebook users. The number has been projected to reach 151.63 in 2027, a drop from the 152.2 million of 2025. Brazil was the largest Facebook user base in Latin America in 2022, followed by Mexico, Colombia, and Argentina.

The upper hand among heavy users Brazilians spend more time on social media than any other population in the Western Hemisphere. Their heavy use of these platforms contributes to the prevalence of Mark Zuckerberg’s social network. Through Facebook, people in Brazil try to get to know more about the world and to keep in touch with each other: around half of adults on the social network used it as a source of news.

Limits to growth? In the first half of 2022, Facebook accounted for almost 48.56 percent of all social media site visits in Brazil. Furthermore, throughout the COVID-19 outbreak – the market shares of Facebook, YouTube, and Pinterest decreased in Brazil compared with the first half of 2019.

During the fourth quarter of 2023, the number of daily active users on Facebook reached 2.1 billion, a minor increase on the previous quarter. When compared with the number of daily active users in the final quarter of 2022, the platform has gained around 100 million users. Facebook’s penetration rate for the United States in 2023 was 72.13 percent, up from 71.43 percent in 2022. The social network’s audience reach is projected to stand at 75.79 percent by 2027.

Most popular social media websites

As of May 2021, Facebook was the most used social media site in the United States, accounting for 71.8 percent of all social media visits. Ranking in second place was Pinterest with 12.4 percent, followed by Twitter and Instagram, with 9.15 percent and 3.82 percent, respectively. Although other sites remain popular, Facebook’s number of visits made it undoubtably the leading social media platform in terms of social media site visits.

For Generation Z and Millennials in the United States, Facebook was one of the least popular platforms used to connect with others. Gen Z and Millennials preferred video sharing platforms, specifically Snapchat, TikTok and YouTube.

Meta’s revenue

Facebook Inc was renamed as Meta in 2021, in a strategic step toward the metaverse. Meta Platforms is now the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp amongst others, together being known as Meta’s Family of Apps.

Meta’s annual revenue for 2021 was 117.92 billion U.S. dollars, up from 85.97 billion in 2020. Within a decade, the company has increased its annual revenue by approximately 114 billion U.S. dollars. In the most recent fiscal year, Meta’s Family of Apps were responsible for over 115 billion U.S. dollars’ worth of Meta’s revenue.

In the United Kingdom in January 2025, women aged 25 to 34 years made up Facebook's largest audience in the country, accounting for almost 13 percent of all users. Men in the same age bracket were the second-largest audience base, accounting for 12 percent of users. Around 11 percent of Facebook users in the UK were aged 65 and older. Facebook UK  Facebook UK Limited generated approximately 211 million British pounds in revenue during 2015, a figure that skyrocketed to 1.27 billion British pounds in 2017. According to Facebook UK, this was the result of the company commencing advertiser reseller services in April 2016. For the year 2019, the company declared a revenue of roughly one billion British pounds within the UK. In the first quarter of 2021, the company generated a total European revenue of 6.5 billion U.S. Dollars.     Growth in European active users As well as rising revenues, Facebook has also seen a slow increase in the number of monthly active users (MAUs) across Europe. During the first quarter of 2015, Facebook attracted 307 million MAUs, a figure that would rise to 423 million by the first quarter of 2021. Globally, Facebook had roughly 2.85 billion MAUs by the first quarter of 2021.

The number of Facebook users in Czechia increased overall from September 2018 to February 2025. There were 5.13 million users back in September 2018. However, in February 2025, this figure stood at 7.04 million. This figure did not change since May 2024. A peak was recorded in May 2023 at 7.45 million Facebook users.
