TwitterIn 2019, 10.6 percent of film directors in Hollywood were women, marking a huge jump from the 4.5 percent reported in the previous year. However, looking at data running back to 2007, it is clear that annual increases do not necessarily result in long term growth when it comes to the climb towards proportionate representation in this employment area. In 2008, eight percent of directors in the U.S. movie industry were female, but in 2013 and 2014 the share dropped to below two percent. The 2019 figure may be the highest recorded since the source began exploring the industry over a decade ago, but history suggests that this will not necessarily translate into future increases, and could drop again in 2020.

A slate analysis looked at the share of movies released in the U.S. with female directors, here presented by distributor. STX Entertainment had the highest mean total over five years with 17 percent of female directors. The movie studio offering the least amount of representation was by far Paramount, with female directors making up zero percent of total directors in every year from 2015 to 2019.

The indicator measures the share of female board members and executives in the largest publicly listed companies. Publicly listed means that the shares of the company are traded on the stock exchange. The ‘largest’ companies are taken to be the members (max. 50) of the primary blue-chip index, which is an index maintained by the stock exchange and covers the largest companies by market capitalisation and/or market trades. Only companies which are registered in the country concerned are counted. Board members cover all members of the highest decision-making body in each company (i.e. chairperson, non-executive directors, senior executives and employee representatives, where present). Executives refer to senior executives in the two highest decision-making bodies of the largest (max. 50) nationally registered companies listed on the national stock exchange. The two highest decision-making bodies are usually referred to as the supervisory board and the management board (in case of a two-tier governance system) and the board of directors and executive/management committee (in a unitary system). The data comes from the Gender Statistics Database of the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE).

TwitterThis paper analyzes the influence of female participation on the performance and financial risk considering a sample of 218 public companies traded on B3 (Bovespa) from 2010 a 2016. The study also analyzes the influence of female participation on family control companies. Using a random effects methodology and family control dummy and percentage of female presence in boards of director, the study sought to analyze how theses variables and their interactions affect the financial performance of companies. Although the female representation has grown more than 50% in recent years, this share, however, in the board of directors of Brazilian companies is still a minority, close to 9% of the total surveyed. The ownership structure in the family firms is very relevant, with the percentage of 63%. The results suggest a positive relation between female participation and the Tobin-Q, used by value’s proxy, however, this relationship is weaker for firms with a family control. Another result found is that volatility, taken here as a risk’s proxy, is reduced in family run-business.

MUSLIMWOMENFILM is a Horizon2020-funded interdisciplinary project that identifies a new object of study, Muslim women’s auto/biographical filmmaking, and maps the factors that make it distinctive within women’s and feminist cinema. As part of the project, this dataset of 290 auto/biographical film titles made by Muslim women filmmakers from Pakistan, Iran, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Turkey from the 1980s to date was created. The date of 1980 is significant of the advent and broad availability of video technologies, which facilitated independent filmmaking, new topics, wider audiences and exhibition, and the global emergence of a greater number of women filmmakers. The data was drawn from scholarly studies, industrial reports, governmental and non-governmental bodies, film festivals, and filmmakers’ websites. The resulting dataset includes essential data for each film, and categorizes them under a number of headings, selected to highlight important features of the films and of their auto/biographical approach. The categorization is discussed in the related text file. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie grant agreement No 837154.
