    Description

Political scientists have increasingly begun to study how citizen characteristics shape whether—and how—they interact with the police. Less is known about how officer characteristics shape these interactions. In this article, we examine how one officer characteristic—officer sex—shapes the nature of police-initiated contact with citizens. Drawing on literature from multiple fields, we develop and test a set of competing expectations. Using over four million traffic stops made by the Florida State Highway Patrol and Charlotte (North Carolina) Police Department, we find that women officers are less likely to search drivers than men on the force. Despite these lower search rates, when women officers do conduct a search, they are more likely to find contraband and they confiscate the same net amount of contraband as men. These results indicate that women officers are able to minimize the number of negative interactions with citizens without losses in effectiveness.

    Description

This study examined women correctional officers working in the 11 institutions for men operated by the California Department of Corrections in 1979. For Part 1, Census, researchers conducted a census of all 386 female correctional officers working in these institutions to collect demographic characteristics and baseline data. For Parts 2 (Staff) and 3 (Inmate), a survey was administered to staff and inmates asking their opinions about differences in performance between male and female correctional officers. Part 4, Profile, contains demographic and background data for the officers participating in the Part 2 survey. For Parts 5 (Female) and 6 (Male), researchers gathered job performance data for female correctional officers in 7 of the 11 institutions, as well as a matched sample of male correctional officers. Variables in Parts 1 and 4-6 include demographic information such as age, ethnicity, marital status, number of children, and educational and occupational history. Other variables measure attributes such as age, weight, and height, and record career information such as date and location of permanent assignment as a correctional officer, any breaks in service, and other criminal justice work experience. Additional variables in Parts 5 and 6 include job performance measures, such as ratings on skills, knowledge, work habits, learning ability, overall work habits, quality and quantity of work, and commendations. Parts 2 and 3 present information on staff and inmate evaluations of male and female correctional officers performing specific roles, such as control work officer, yard officer, or security squad officer. Additional variables include opinions on how well male and female officers handled emergency situations, maintained control under stress, and used firearms when necessary. Questions were also asked about whether inmates' or officers' safety was endangered with female officers, whether women should be hired as correctional officers, and whether female officers were gaining acceptance in correctional facilities.

    Description

How can public confidence in the police be restored in high-crime environments? What type of police officers would citizens in violent democracies see as trusted? This paper examines how the gender and the occupational background of police officers affect citizens’ perceptions of effectiveness and misconduct of the local police. The focus is on Mexico, a country where military officers have taken over policing functions. Using an online survey experiment, we find that female officers improve perceptions of police effectiveness and reduce perceptions of police misconduct. The effects of female officers on both police effectiveness and misconduct are moreover independent of the occupational (military) background of officers and are stronger for those to whom the state has failed – those who have experienced crime, are fearful thereof or have been exposed to police corruption and abuse. Recruiting more female officers can do more than militarisation for building a trusted security force in Mexico

    Description

The data was collated from over 2000 female police officers in relation to the wearing of body armour, bra type and size, discomfort and ability to perform simple tasks. The data relates to officers from the police forces of England and Wales only, collected in 2016.

    Introduction

Body armour, a staple in modern policing and security, has undergone a remarkable transformation from its rudimentary beginnings to the sophisticated, high-tech equipment of today. Initially designed to protect against blunt force trauma, its capabilities have expanded to include protection against ballistic threats, edged weapons, and even chemical agents.
Historical Perspective The earliest forms of body armour were essentially padded garments designed to absorb the impact of blows. Over time, materials like metal and leather were incorporated to enhance protection. However, these early iterations were often heavy, restrictive, and offered limited protection. The advent of modern synthetic materials marked a significant turning point. Kevlar, a synthetic fibre with exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, revolutionised body armour design. It enabled the creation of lighter, more flexible, and more effective protective garments.

    The Modern Body Armour

Contemporary body armour is a complex system consisting of multiple layers designed to stop or deflect projectiles. The core protective elements are typically made from advanced materials like Kevlar, Dyneema, or ceramic, each with its own specific properties. - Ballistic Panels: These are the primary protective layers, designed to stop bullets. They are often made from a combination of materials for optimal performance. - Soft Armour: Located behind the ballistic panels, soft armour helps to distribute the impact of a projectile, reducing the risk of injury.
    - Stab and Slash Resistant Layers: Incorporated into some body armour, these layers provide protection against edged weapons.
    - Additional Features: Many modern body armour systems include features like trauma pads, which help to distribute the impact of blunt force trauma, and hydration systems.

Feedback from female officers has shown that body armour can be uncomfortable and painful to wear for long periods of time.

Body Armour for Female Officers: A Long-Overdue Development

Traditionally, body armour was designed with male physiques in mind. This oversight resulted in ill-fitting and uncomfortable equipment for female officers, compromising both comfort and protection. The introduction of gender-specific body armour in England and Wales in 2023 represents a significant step forward in officer safety and well-being. The third-generation body armour is tailored to individual body shapes and sizes, offering a better fit and enhanced protection.
Key features of the new body armour include: - Customised Fit: Designed to accommodate the specific contours of the female body.
    - Lighter Weight: Reducing physical strain and fatigue.
    - Increased Flexibility: Enhancing mobility and comfort. - Enhanced Protection: Offering superior coverage, including critical areas like the neck and armpits. - Advanced Materials: Incorporating hydrophobic, self-cleaning, anti-microbial, and heat-repellent properties.

The new armour is designed to mold to the female form and keep the wearer cooler. It also positions equipment for easy access and minimises load to help with...

    Description

Police Departments' Use of Lethality Assessments: An Experimental Evaluation examined the effectiveness of the Lethality Assessment Protocol (LAP), a tool used to gauge the severity of danger to victims of intimate partner violence (IPV) and determine whether to immediately connect victims with additional resources and safety options. Specifically, the evaluation focused on the effectiveness of the LAP at decreasing the rates of repeat, lethal and near lethal violence and increasing the rates of emergency safety planning and help seeking among women who experienced IPV and called the police. Additionally, the predictive and concurrent validity of the screening portion of the LAP was evaluated, as were the implementation of the LAP by officers and IPV victims' satisfaction with the police responses they experienced. The study consisted of two groups: (1) a comparison group, which included women who were victims of IPV and were referred to the study by a police officer; and (2) an intervention group which consisted of victims of IPV who were administered the LAP by police. Both groups were contacted for baseline and follow-up phone interview surveys that recorded the victims' self-reported demographic information (age, race, income, education marital status), information about the status of their relationships with their partners, as well as the type of abuse they had endured and how this affected their behavior.
