    Description

This dataset contains data from the National Center for Education Statistics' Academic Library Survey, which was gathered every two years from 1996 - 2014, and annually in IPEDS starting in 2014 (this dataset has continued to only merge data every two years, following the original schedule). This data was merged, transformed, and used for research by Starr Hoffman and Samantha Godbey. This data was merged using R; R scripts for this merge can be made available upon request. Some variables changed names or definitions during this time; a view of these variables over time is provided in the related Figshare Project. Carnegie Classification changed several times during this period; all Carnegie classifications were crosswalked to the 2000 classification version; that information is also provided in the related Figshare Project. This data was used for research published in several articles, conference papers, and posters starting in 2018 (some of this research used an older version of the dataset which was deposited in the University of Nevada, Las Vegas's repository).SourcesAll data sources were downloaded from the National Center for Education Statistics website https://nces.ed.gov/. Description

The National Postsecondary Student Aid Study, 1992-93 (NPSAS:93), is a study that is part of the National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (NPSAS) program; program data is available since 1989-90 at https://nces.ed.gov/pubsearch/getpubcats.asp?sid=013. NPSAS:93 (https://nces.ed.gov/surveys/npsas/about.asp) is a cross-sectional survey that is designed to compile a comprehensive research dataset, based on student-level records, on financial aid provided by the federal government, the states, postsecondary institutions, employers, and private agencies along with student demographic and enrollment data. The study was conducted using multiple sources, including institutional records, government databases, and student interviews. NPSAS:93 contains the data on a sample of about 66,000 eligible postsecondary students who were enrolled at any time between July 1, 1992 and June 30, 1993 in about 1,100 postsecondary institutions. The data are representative of all undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in postsecondary institutions in the 50 United States, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico that were eligible to participate in the federal financial aid programs in Title IV of the Higher Education Act. After adjusting for institutional nonresponse and for attendance at more than one institution, the overall weighted study response rate was 85 percent. Statistics produced from the NPSAS:93 provide reliable national estimates of characteristics related to financial aid for postsecondary students.

    Description

The Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System, 2010-11 (IPEDS 2010-11), was a study that was part of the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) program; program data is available since 1980 at . IPEDS 2010-11 (https://nces.ed.gov/ipeds/) was a cross-sectional survey designed to collect basic data from all postsecondary institutions in the United States and the other jurisdictions. Key statistics produced from IPEDS 2010-11 allowed the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) to describe the size of one of the nation's largest enterprises--postsecondary education-- in terms of students enrolled, degrees and other awards earned, dollars expended, and staff employed. All Title IV institutions were required to respond to IPEDS (see Section 490 of the Higher Education Amendments of 1992 [P.L. 102-325; 20 U.S.C. 1070 et seq.]). IPEDS allowed other, non-Title IV institutions to participate on a voluntary basis, but only about 200 elected to respond.

    Description

The American Community Survey Education Tabulation (ACS-ED) is a custom tabulation of the ACS produced for the National Center of Education Statistics (NCES) by the U.S. Census Bureau. The ACS-ED provides a rich collection of social, economic, demographic, and housing characteristics for school systems, school-age children, and the parents of school-age children. In addition to focusing on school-age children, the ACS-ED provides enrollment iterations for children enrolled in public school. The data profiles include percentages (along with associated margins of error) that allow for comparison of school district-level conditions across the U.S. For more information about the NCES ACS-ED collection, visit the NCES Education Demographic and Geographic Estimates (EDGE) program at: https://nces.ed.gov/programs/edge/Demographic/ACS

The National Center for Education Statistics' (NCES) Education Demographic and Geographic Estimate (EDGE) program develops annually updated point locations (latitude and longitude) for postsecondary institutions included in the NCES Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS). The IPEDS program annually collects information about enrollments, program completions, graduation rates, faculty and staff, finances, institutional prices, and student financial aid from every college, university, and technical and vocational institution that participates in federal student financial aid programs under the Higher Education Act of 1965 (as amended). IPEDS school point locations are derived from reported information about the physical location of schools. The NCES EDGE program collaborates with the U.S. Census Bureau's Education Demographic, Geographic, and Economic Statistics (EDGE) Branch to develop point locations for schools reported in the annual IPEDS file. The point locations in this data layer were developed from the 2017-2018 IPEDS collection. For more information about NCES school point data, see: https://nces.ed.gov/programs/edge/Geographic/SchoolLocations. All information contained in this file is in the public domain. Data users are advised to review NCES program documentation and feature class metadata to understand the limitations and appropriate use of these data.

    Description

The purpose of this data collection was to provide a more accurate measure of the racial/ethnic enrollment in postsecondary institutions in the United States than was previously available. The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) collects racial/ethnic enrollment data from higher education institutions on an annual basis. Some institutions do not report these data, and their "unknown" categories have previously been distributed in direct proportion to the "knowns." This resulted in lower than accurate figures for the racial/ethnic categories. With the advent of the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), NCES has attempted to eliminate this problem by distributing all "race/ethnicity unknown" students through a two-stage process. First, the differences between reported totals and racial/ethnic details were allocated on a gender and institutional basis by distributing the differences in direct proportion to reported distributions. The second-stage distribution was designed to eliminate the remaining instances of "race/ethnicity unknown." The procedure was to accumulate the reported racial/ethnic total enrollments by state, level, control, and gender, calculate the percentage distributions, and apply these percentages to the reported total enrollments of institutional respondents (in the same state, level, and control) that did not supply race/ethnicity detail. In addition, the original "race/ethnicity unknown" data were also left unaltered for those who wish to review the numbers actually distributed. The racial/ethnic status was broken down into nonresident alien, Black non-Hispanic, American Indian or Alaskan Native, Asian or Pacific Islander, Hispanic, and White non-Hispanic. There are six data files. Part 1, Institutional Characteristics, includes variables on control and level of institution, religious affiliation, highest level of offering, Carnegie classification, and state FIPS code and abbreviation. Variables in Part 2 cover total original enrollment by race/ethnicity and sex and by level and year of study of student. Race/ethnicity data were not imputed for institutions that only reported total enrollment. The "race ethnicity unknown" category was not distributed among the race/ethnicity categories. In Part 3, enrollment data are presented by race/ethnicity and sex of student, and by level and year of study for the following selected major field of studies: architecture, education, engineering, law, biological/life sciences, mathematics, physical sciences, dentistry, medicine, veterinary medicine, and business management and administrative services. This file contains data for four-year institutions only. Part 4 provides summary enrollment data by adjusted race/ethnicity and sex of student and by level and year of study of student. The "race/ethnicity unknown" category data were distributed across all known race categories in this file. Also, race data were imputed for institutions that did not report enrollment by race. Part 5, Residence and Migration, contains enrollment data for first-time freshmen, by state of residence. Part 6, Clarifying Questions on Enrollments, provides information on students enrolled in remedial courses, extension divisions, and branches of schools, and numbers of transfer students from in-state, out of state, and other countries. (Source: downloaded from ICPSR 7/13/10)

Please Note: This dataset is part of the historical CISER Data Archive Collection and is also available at ICPSR at https://doi.org/10.3886/ICPSR02447.v1. We highly recommend using the ICPSR version as they may make this dataset available in multiple data formats in the future.

The National Center for Education Statistics’ (NCES) Education Demographic and Geographic Estimates (EDGE) program develops bi-annually updated point locations (latitude and longitude) for private schools included in the NCES Private School Survey (PSS). The PSS is conducted to provide a biennial count of the total number of private schools, teachers, and students. The PSS school location and associated geographic area assignments are derived from reported information about the physical location of private schools. The school geocode file includes supplemental geographic information for the universe of schools reported in the most current PSS school collection, and they can be integrated with the survey files through use of institutional identifiers included in both sources. Description

The Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System, 2006-07 (IPEDS 2006-07), was a study that was part of the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) program; program data is available since 1980 at . IPEDS 2006-07 (https://nces.ed.gov/ipeds/) was a cross-sectional survey designed to collect basic data from all postsecondary institutions in the United States and the other jurisdictions. Key statistics produced from IPEDS 2006-07 allowed the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) to describe the size of one of the nation's largest enterprises--postsecondary education-- in terms of students enrolled, degrees and other awards earned, dollars expended, and staff employed. All Title IV institutions were required to respond to IPEDS (see Section 490 of the Higher Education Amendments of 1992 [P.L. 102-325;1070 et seq.]). IPEDS allowed other, non-Title IV institutions to participate on a voluntary basis, but only about 200 elected to respond.
