Letters to shareholders are an important element of annual reports characterized by a lack of legal formalism. As a result, companies often use these documents as a channel for relatively free communication with investors. Letters often serve to create the company's image, interpreting the reality captured in the hard data presented in financial statements. The purpose of this study is to analyze the impact of a company's financial performance on communication strategies in letters to shareholders. The study includes an analysis of letters from British, American and Polish companies - in the case of the latter, two language versions: Polish and English.The dataset includes:a genre-based comparable-parallel corpus, which includes a parallel sub-corpus of letters to shareholders of ten Polish companies and two comparable sub-corpora containing letters to shareholders of ten UK and ten US companies. The companies were selected randomly from the list of enterprises included in the major indices of the respective markets: WIG30 in Poland, FTSE100 (Financial Times Stock Exchange 100 Index) in the UK and the Dow Jones Composite Average (covering 65 constituents) in the US. The letters were drafted from 2013 to 2022, i.e. for every company ten letters were collected. Companies which have been operating for less than ten years were excluded from the study. The Polish subcorpus includes letters that were drafted in Polish and translated into English – letters that did not have the English translation of their letter or have drafted their letter in English were excluded from the study;a folder containing spreadsheets with: 1) the list of the companies with basic identifying information; 2) financial data used in the study; 3a) number of tokens per text in the corpora; 3b) number of words and tokens in the corpora used in the study; 4) raw frequencies of expressions analysed; 5) normalised frequencies of expressions analysed; 6) results of the correlation between financial indicators and linguistic data.

This study examines environmental reporting practices among leading firms in the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States of America (USA) by analyzing the top 50 firms from the Financial Times Stock Exchange 100 (FTSE100) and the Standard & Poor 100 (S&P100) indices during 2018 and 2019. Using volumetric metrics from annual and stand-alone reports, we assess disclosure patterns prior to the adoption of the revised Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Standards and in anticipation of the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) S1 and S2. Statistical analyses including correlation tests and both independent and paired sample t-tests reveal three key findings: (1) UK firms disclosed significantly less environmental content than US firms, suggesting strategic prioritization of other environmental, social, and governance (ESG) topics and alignment with national reporting expectations; (2) strong correlations among volumetric disclosure measures, coupled with statistically significant shifts over time, indicate that firms exhibit both consistency and adaptability in disclosure practices; and (3) significant differences in disclosure volumes between the two countries confirm the influence of regulatory systems, national cultures, and reporting norms. These findings support legitimacy theory and suggest that the environmental disclosure volume highlights the role of institutional and cultural contexts. They illustrate how multinational corporations navigate regulatory changes and prepare for new standards, offering a valuable perspective for evaluating corporate environmental accountability. This study underscores the continuing relevance of legitimacy theory and calls for further research into the drivers of voluntary sustainability reporting in a shifting regulatory landscape.

This report presents statistics on women’s smoking status at time of delivery, at Sub Integrated Care Board (Sub-ICB), Integrated Care Board (ICB), regional and national levels. This release includes provisional data for quarter 2 of 2024-25 using data from the Smoking at Time of Delivery data collection which is submitted by commissioners (presented as SATOD v1). Alongside this and for the second time, comparative data using the Maternity Services Dataset (MSDS) is also presented using data submitted by Trusts (presented as SATOD v2) as a time series from quarter 1 of 2022-23 to quarter 2 of 2024-25. This is available for the same geographical breakdowns and includes an additional breakdown for Local Authorities. This will be repeated for subsequent quarters in 2024-25 to see how the estimates from both data sources align with a view to retiring the Smoking at Time of Delivery data collection at the end of this financial year. Until then, SATOD v1 remains the primary data source for this publication Earlier this year, a proposal for the data source for this publication to be changed to the Maternity Services Dataset was included in a wider consultation: Health and social care statistical outputs published by DHSC (including OHID), NHSBSA, UKHSA, ONS and NHS England.
