    As of 2022, the third leading cause of death among teenagers aged 15 to 19 years in the United States was intentional self-harm or suicide, contributing around 17 percent of deaths among age group. The leading cause of death at that time was unintentional injuries, contributing to around 37.4 percent of deaths, while 21.8 percent of all deaths in this age group were due to assault or homicide. Cancer and heart disease, the overall leading causes of death in the United States, are also among the leading causes of death among U.S. teenagers. Adolescent suicide in the United States In 2021, around 22 percent of students in grades 9 to 12 reported that they had seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year. Female students were around twice as likely to report seriously considering suicide compared to male students. In 2022, Montana had the highest rate of suicides among U.S. teenagers with around 39 deaths per 100,000 teenagers, followed by South Dakota with a rate of 33 per 100,000. The states with the lowest death rates among adolescents are New York and New Jersey. Mental health treatment Suicidal thoughts are a clear symptom of mental health issues. Mental health issues are not rare among children and adolescents, and treatment for such issues has become increasingly accepted and accessible. In 2021, around 15 percent of boys and girls aged 5 to 17 years had received some form of mental health treatment in the past year. At that time, around 35 percent of youths aged 12 to 17 years in the United States who were receiving specialty mental health services were doing so because they had thought about killing themselves or had already tried to kill themselves.

    This dataset reports the daily reported number of deaths involving COVID-19 by fatality type. Learn how the Government of Ontario is helping to keep Ontarians safe during the 2019 Novel Coronavirus outbreak. Data includes: * Date on which the death occurred * Total number of deaths involving COVID-19 * Number of deaths with “COVID-19 as the underlying cause of death” * Number of deaths with “COVID-19 contributed but not underlying cause” * Number of deaths where the “Cause of death unknown” or “Cause of death missing” ##Additional Notes As of June 16, all COVID-19 datasets will be updated weekly on Thursdays by 2pm. The method used to count COVID-19 deaths has changed, effective December 1, 2022. Prior to December 1 2022, deaths were counted based on the date the death was updated in the public health unit’s system. Going forward, deaths are counted on the date they occurred. On November 30, 2023 the count of COVID-19 deaths was updated to include missing historical deaths from January 15, 2020 to March 31, 2023. CCM is a dynamic disease reporting system which allows ongoing update to data previously entered. As a result, data extracted from CCM represents a snapshot at the time of extraction and may differ from previous or subsequent results. Public Health Units continually clean up COVID-19 data, correcting for missing or overcounted cases and deaths. These corrections can result in data spikes and current totals being different from previously reported cases and deaths. Observed trends over time should be interpreted with caution for the most recent period due to reporting and/or data entry lags. As of December 1, 2022, data are based on the date on which the death occurred. This reporting method differs from the prior method which is based on net change in COVID-19 deaths reported day over day. Data are based on net change in COVID-19 deaths for which COVID-19 caused the death reported day over day. Deaths are not reported by the date on which death happened as reporting may include deaths that happened on previous dates. Spikes, negative numbers and other data anomalies: Due to ongoing data entry and data quality assurance activities in Case and Contact Management system (CCM) file, Public Health Units continually clean up COVID-19, correcting for missing or overcounted cases and deaths. These corrections can result in data spikes, negative numbers and current totals being different from previously reported case and death counts. Public Health Units report cause of death in the CCM based on information available to them at the time of reporting and in accordance with definitions provided by Public Health Ontario. The medical certificate of death is the official record and the cause of death could be different. Deaths are defined per the outcome field in CCM marked as “Fatal”. Deaths in COVID-19 cases identified as unrelated to COVID-19 are not included in the number of deaths involving COVID-19 reported. "Cause of death unknown" is the category of death for COVID-19 positive individuals with cause of death still under investigation, or for which the public health unit was unable to determine cause of death. The category may change later when the cause of death is confirmed either as “COVID-19 as the underlying cause of death”, “COVID-19 contributed but not underlying cause,” or “COVID-19 unrelated”. "Cause of death missing" is the category of death for COVID-19 positive individuals with the cause of death missing in CCM. Rates for the most recent days are subject to reporting lags All data reflects totals from 8 p.m. the previous day. This dataset is subject to change.

    Description

    This table provides the age-standardized mortality rates per 100,000 population, for the three selected causes of death and all causes combined. The three selected causes of death are Circulatory System, Neoplasms and External Causes (Injury). Age standardization is a technique applied to make rates comparable across groups with different age distributions. A simple rate is defined as the number of people with a particular condition divided by the whole population. An age-standardized rate is defined as the number of people with a condition divided by the population within each age group. Standardizing (adjusting) the rate across age groups allows a more accurate comparison between populations that have different age structures. Age standardization is typically done when comparing rates across time periods, different geographic areas, and or population sub-groups (e.g. ethnic group). This indicator dataset contains information at both Local Geographic Area (for example, Lacombe, Red Deer - North, Calgary - West Bow, etc.) and Alberta levels. Local geographic area refers to 132 geographic areas created by Alberta Health (AH) and Alberta Health Services (AHS) based on census boundaries.     This dataset provides total number of death registrations by the location in which the death occurred. For privacy purposes, only regulation counts greater than 5 are available. Data released for 2023 and 2024 (January to June) is preliminary and may not match counts from other sources. The data represents counts in the reference calendar quarters, which are collated approximately 90 days after the end of the quarter. Previously released counts 2023 and 2024 (January to June) are updated to reflect vital event registrations completed after the release of the initial report. Each subsequent quarterly report is the cumulative total of the preceding quarterly reports. ServiceOntario’s ability to provide timely information depends on receiving vital event registration information from a variety of sources. The preliminary data presented may not represent all the events that occurred in the reporting period. This is particularly true for events that occurred near the end of the reporting period as they may not have been received by ServiceOntario by the time the data is collated. Final counts for the reporting year will be released with the publication of the Office of the Registrar General Annual Report. The Vital Statistics Act requires that after the end of each calendar year, the Registrar General publish a report that includes the number of births, marriages, deaths, still-births, adoptions and changes of name registered during the calendar year preceding the one that has ended.

    As of April 15, 2023, there had been a total of around 51,921 deaths attributed to COVID-19 in Canada. As of this time, every province and territory has reported deaths, with Quebec and Ontario reporting the highest numbers.

    COVID-19 in Canada Canada has recorded almost 4.65 million coronavirus cases since the first infection in the country was confirmed on January 25, 2020. The number of cases by province shows that Ontario and Quebec have been the most severely affected. The number of daily new cases reached record highs at the end of 2021 and began to decrease as spring arrived in 2022.

    COVID-19 vaccinations in Canada Seven COVID-19 vaccines have now been approved for use in Canada and vaccines are widely available. As of January 1, 2023 around 83 percent of the Canadian population had received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. The provinces with the highest share of people fully vaccinated against COVID-19 are Newfoundland and Labrador and Nova Scotia. However, Ontario and Quebec are the provinces with the highest total number of people vaccinated.

    COVID-19 rate of death, or the known deaths divided by confirmed cases, was over ten percent in Yemen, the only country that has 1,000 or more cases. This according to a calculation that combines coronavirus stats on both deaths and registered cases for 221 different countries. Note that death rates are not the same as the chance of dying from an infection or the number of deaths based on an at-risk population. By April 26, 2022, the virus had infected over 510.2 million people worldwide, and led to a loss of 6.2 million. The source seemingly does not differentiate between "the Wuhan strain" (2019-nCOV) of COVID-19, "the Kent mutation" (B.1.1.7) that appeared in the UK in late 2020, the 2021 Delta variant (B.1.617.2) from India or the Omicron variant (B.1.1.529) from South Africa.

    Where are these numbers coming from?

    The numbers shown here were collected by Johns Hopkins University, a source that manually checks the data with domestic health authorities. For the majority of countries, this is from national authorities. In some cases, like China, the United States, Canada or Australia, city reports or other various state authorities were consulted. In this statistic, these separately reported numbers were put together. Note that Statista aims to also provide domestic source material for a more complete picture, and not to just look at one particular source. Examples are these statistics on the confirmed coronavirus cases in Russia or the COVID-19 cases in Italy, both of which are from domestic sources.     A word on the flaws of numbers like this

    People are right to ask whether these numbers are at all representative or not for several reasons. First, countries worldwide decide differently on who gets tested for the virus, meaning that comparing case numbers or death rates could to some extent be misleading. Germany, for example, started testing relatively early once the country’s first case was confirmed in Bavaria in January 2020, whereas Italy tests for the coronavirus postmortem. Second, not all people go to see (or can see, due to testing capacity) a doctor when they have mild symptoms. Countries like Norway and the Netherlands, for example, recommend people with non-severe symptoms to just stay at home. This means not all cases are known all the time, which could significantly alter the death rate as it is presented here. Third and finally, numbers like this change very frequently depending on how the pandemic spreads or the national healthcare capacity. It is therefore recommended to look at other (freely accessible) content that dives more into specifics, such as the coronavirus testing capacity in India or the number of hospital beds in the UK. Only with additional pieces of information can you get the full picture, something that this statistic in its current state simply cannot provide.

    Data includes:

    • Date on which the death occurred
    • Age group

    • 7-day moving average of the last seven days of the death rate per 100,000 for those vaccinated with at least one booster

    Additional notes

    As of June 16, all COVID-19 datasets will be updated weekly on Thursdays by 2pm.

    As of January 12, 2024, data from the date of January 1, 2024 onwards reflect updated population estimates. This update specifically impacts data for the 'not fully vaccinated' category.

    On November 30, 2023 the count of COVID-19 deaths was updated to include missing historical deaths from January 15, 2020 to March 31, 2023.

    The data does not include vaccination data for people who did not provide consent for vaccination records to be entered into the provincial COVaxON system. This includes individual records as well as records from some Indigenous communities where those communities have not consented to including vaccination information in COVaxON.

    “Not fully vaccinated” category includes people with no vaccine and one dose of double-dose vaccine. “People with one dose of double-dose vaccine” category has a small and constantly changing number. The combination will stabilize the results.

    Spikes, negative numbers and other data anomalies: Due to ongoing data entry and data quality assurance activities in Case and Contact Management system (CCM) file, Public Health Units continually clean up COVID-19, correcting for missing or overcounted cases and deaths.     Deaths are defined per the outcome field in CCM marked as “Fatal”. Deaths in COVID-19 cases identified as unrelated to COVID-19 are not included in the Deaths involving COVID-19 reported.

    Description

    This data tracks the deaths of children up to 18 years old by the manner in which they died. It also identifies whether or not the child, youth or their family were involved with a children's aid society within 12 months of their death. This data is collected by the Office of the Chief Coroner. Actual number of paediatric deaths is calculated based on data provided by the Registrar General of Ontario and by children's aid societies. It has not been independently verified by the Office of the Chief Coroner.

    Description

    The Dead Game (non-hunt mortality) database tracks mortalities for big game in NB not related to hunting or trapping. Each mortality record indicates the cause of mortality, such as: Vehicular, Predators, Humans, and Disease/Starvation. Latitude and Longitude coordinates are specified beginning in 2011. Other attributes include: Species, Sex, Age Class, Actual age, Death Date, Date Collected, Wildlife Management Zone, ERD Office, ERD Region, Fetuses present, Highway Number (if applicable), and general location. Data included from 2011 to April 2018.

    Description

    In 2023, around 30 percent of adults aged 18 years and older in Canada were obese, while 35.5 percent were overweight. Although the percentage of overweight adults stayed about the same from 2015 to 2022, the percentage of obese adults in the same time period increased by about four percentage points. In 2023, there were around nine million adults in Canada who were obese, while the number of adults who were overweight was almost 11 million. Adolescent obesity The share of Canadian adolescents who are overweight or obese has slowly increased since 2005. In 2022, around 30 percent of adolescents aged 12 to 17 years were either overweight and obese. The total number of obese or overweight Canadian adolescents in 2022 was around 673 thousand. By 2030, it is estimated that Canada will have over 1.1 million children who are obese. Deaths from obesity Being overweight or obese are major health problems that can result in early death. In 2021, it was estimated that around seven percent of all deaths in Canada could be attributed to obesity. At that time, there were around 28 deaths per 100,000 population in Canada that could be attributed to obesity. Diabetes, which is also related to obesity, accounted for about 2.3 percent of all deaths in Canada in 2022, making it the seventh leading cause of death that year.

    Description

    The numbers reflect incidents that were reported to and tracked by the Ministry of Labour. They exclude death from natural causes, death of non- workers at a workplace, suicides, death as a result of a criminal act or traffic accident (unless the OHSA is also implicated) and death from occupational exposures that occurred in the past. Data from the Ministry of Labour reflects Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and Employment Standards (ES) information at a point in time and/or for specific reporting purposes. As a result, the information above may not align with other data sources. Notes on critical injuries : For the purposes of the data provided, a critical injury of a serious nature includes injuries that: 1. "Place life in jeopardy" 2. "Produce unconsciousness" 3. "Result in substantial loss of blood" 4. "Involve the fracture of a leg or arm but not a finger or toe" 5. "Involve the amputation of a leg, arm, hand or foot but not a finger or toe" 6. "Consist of burns to a major portion of the body" 7. "Cause the loss of sight Only critical injury events reported to the ministry are included here. This represents data that was reported to the ministry and may not represent what actually occurred at the workplace. The critical injury numbers represent critical injuries reported to the ministry and not necessarily critical injuries as defined by the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA). Non- workers who are critically injured may also be included in the ministry's data. Critical injuries data is presented by calendar year to be consistent with Workplace Safety and Insurance Board harmonized data; Data is reported based on calendar year Individual data for the Health Care program is available for Jan. 1 to Mar. 31, 2011 only. From April 2011 onwards Health Care data is included in the Industrial Health and Safety numbers. Notes on Fatalities : Only events reported to the ministry are included here. The ministry tracks and reports fatalities at workplaces covered by the OHSA.
