    US Geographic Codes Dataset

This code is used to generate a combined data set of US ZIP, FIPS, and County data for most ZIP Codes in the U.S. (41,867 to be exact).

Code to generate the data set from the government files listed below can be found here.

    The Data

The dataset is organized as follows:

    • Zip Code: USPS ZIP code from here
    • State Name: Full state name (E.g. Michigan)
    • State Abrv: USPS abbreviated state name (E.g: MI)
    • State Code: FIPS State Code from here
    • County Name: County in which ZIP is located
    • County Code: FIPS County Code
    • FIPS Code: FIPS State Code + FIPS County Code from here
    • ANSI Code: American National Standards Institute Code
    • Centroid Lat: Latitude value of the county center
    • Centroid Long: Longitude value of the county center

    Sources

The data used to create this data set was taken from several recent government data sets.

    These are:

    Disclaimers

    Description

This tool--a simple csv or Stata file for merging--gives you a fast way to assign Census county FIPS codes to variously presented county names. This is useful for dealing with county names collected from official sources, such as election returns, which inconsistently present county names and often have misspellings. It will likely take less than ten minutes the first time, and about one minute thereafter--assuming all versions of your county names are in this file. There are about 3,142 counties in the U.S., and there are 77,613 different permutations of county names in this file (ave=25 per county, max=382). Counties with more likely permutations have more versions. Misspellings were added as I came across them over time. I DON'T expect people to cite the use of this tool. DO feel free to suggest the addition of other county name permutations.

    County-Level Demographic: Population, Race, Gender

    Overview

This dataset provides a detailed breakdown of demographic information for counties across the United States, derived from the U.S. Census Bureau's 2023 American Community Survey (ACS). The data includes population counts by gender, race, and ethnicity, alongside unique identifiers for each county using State and County FIPS codes.

    Dataset Features

The dataset includes the following columns: - County: Name of the county. - State: Name of the state the county belongs to. - State FIPS Code: Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) code for the state. - County FIPS Code: FIPS code for the county. - FIPS: Combined State and County FIPS codes, a unique identifier for each county. - Total Population: Total population in the county. - Male Population: Number of males in the county. - Female Population: Number of females in the county. - Total Race Responses: Total race-related responses recorded in the survey. - White Alone: Number of individuals identifying as White alone. - Black or African American Alone: Number of individuals identifying as Black or African American alone. - Hispanic or Latino: Number of individuals identifying as Hispanic or Latino.

    Processing Methodology

    1. Source:
    2. County-Level Aggregation:
      • Each county is uniquely identified using State FIPS Code and County FIPS Code.
      • These codes were concatenated to form the unified FIPS column.
    3. Data Cleaning:
      • All numeric columns were converted to appropriate data types.
      • County and state names were extracted from the raw NAME field for clarity.

    Why Use This Dataset?

This dataset is highly versatile and suitable for: - Demographic Analysis: - Analyze population distribution by gender, race, and ethnicity. - Geographic Studies: - Use FIPS codes to map counties geographically. - Data Visualizations: - Create visual insights into demographic trends across counties.

    File Format

    • The dataset is available as a CSV file with 3,000+ rows (one for each county).

    Licensing

    • Source: Data is sourced from the U.S. Census Bureau's 2023 American Community Survey (ACS).
    • License: This dataset is in the public domain and provided under the U.S. Census Bureau’s terms of use. Attribution to the Census Bureau is appreciated.

    Description

This dataset was created to facilitate the conversion of Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program state and county codes to Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) state and county codes. The four UCR agency-level data files archived at ICPSR in Uniform Crime Reporting Program Data: United States contain UCR state and county codes as geographic identifiers. Researchers who wish to use these data with other sources, such as Census data, may want to convert these UCR codes to FIPS codes in order to link the different data sources. This file was created to facilitate this linkage. It contains state abbreviations, UCR state and county codes, FIPS state and county codes, and county names for all counties present in the UCR data files since 1990. These same FIPS codes were used to create the UCR County-Level Detailed Arrest and Offense files from 1990-1996.

    Description

The TIGER/Line Files include both incorporated places (legal entities) and census designated places or CDPs (statistical entities). An incorporated place is established to provide governmental functions for a concentration of people as opposed to a minor civil division (MCD), which generally is created to provide services or administer an area without regard, necessarily, to population. Places always nest within a State, but may extend across county and county subdivision boundaries. An incorporated place usually is a city, town, village, or borough, but can have other legal descriptions. CDPs are delineated for the decennial census as the statistical counterparts of incorporated places. CDPs are delineated to provide data for settled concentrations of population that are identifiable by name, but are not legally incorporated under the laws of the State in which they are located. The boundaries for CDPs often are defined in partnership with State, local, and/or tribal officials and usually coincide with visible features or the boundary of an adjacent incorporated place or another legal entity. CDP boundaries often change from one decennial census to the next with changes in the settlement pattern and development; a CDP with the same name as in an earlier census does not necessarily have the same boundary. The only population/housing size requirement for CDPs for the 2010 Census is that they must contain some housing and population. The boundaries of all 2020 Census incorporated places are as of January 1, 2020 as reported through the Census Bureau's Boundary and Annexation Survey (BAS). The boundaries of all 2020 Census CDPs were delineated as part of the Census Bureau's Participant Statistical Areas Program (PSAP).STATEFP 2 String State FIPS codeCONCTYFP 5 String Consolidated city FIPS codeCONCTYNS 8 String Consolidated city GNIS codeGEOID 7 String Consolidated city identifier; a concatenation of current state FIPS code and consolidated city FIPS codeNAME 100 String Consolidated city nameNAMELSAD 100 String Name and the translated legal/statistical area description for consolidated cityLSAD 2 String Legal/statistical area description code for consolidated cityCLASSFP 2 String FIPS class codeMTFCC 5 String MAF/TIGER Feature Class Code (G4120)FUNCSTAT 1 String Functional statusALAND 14 Number Land areaAWATER 14 Number Water areaINTPTLAT 11 String Latitude of the internal pointINTPTLON 12 String Longitude of the internal poinhttps://www2.census.gov/geo/pdfs/maps-data/data/tiger/tgrshp_rd18/TGRSHPRD18_TechDoc.pdf

    Description

Abstract (en): This data collection contains FIPS codes for state, county, county subdivision, and place, along with the 1990 Census tract number for each side of the street for the urban cores of 550 counties in the United States. Street names, including prefix and/or suffix direction (north, southeast, etc.) and street type (avenue, lane, etc.) are provided, as well as the address range for that portion of the street located within a particular Census tract and the corresponding Census tract number. The FIPS county subdivision and place codes can be used to determine the correct Census tract number when streets with identical names and ranges exist in different parts of the same county. Contiguous block segments that have consecutive address ranges along a street and that have the same geographic codes (state, county, Census tract, county subdivision, and place) have been collapsed together and are represented by a single record with a single address range. 2006-01-12 All files were removed from dataset 551 and flagged as study-level files, so that they will accompany all downloads. (1) Due to the number of files in this collection, parts have been eliminated here. For a complete list of individual part names designated by state and county, consult the ICPSR Website. (2) There are two types of records in this collection, distinguished by the first character of each record. A "0" indicates a street name/address range record that can be used to find the Census tract number and other geographic codes from a street name and address number. A "2" indicates a geographic code/name record that can be used to find the name of the state, county, county subdivision, and/or place from the FIPS code. The "0" records contain 18 variables and the "2" records contain 10 variables.

    Description

The Bureau of the Census has released Census 2000 Summary File 1 (SF1) 100-Percent data. The file includes the following population items: sex, age, race, Hispanic or Latino origin, household relationship, and household and family characteristics. Housing items include occupancy status and tenure (whether the unit is owner or renter occupied). SF1 does not include information on incomes, poverty status, overcrowded housing or age of housing. These topics will be covered in Summary File 3. Data are available for states, counties, county subdivisions, places, census tracts, block groups, and, where applicable, American Indian and Alaskan Native Areas and Hawaiian Home Lands. The SF1 data are available on the Bureau's web site and may be retrieved from American FactFinder as tables, lists, or maps. Users may also download a set of compressed ASCII files for each state via the Bureau's FTP server. There are over 8000 data items available for each geographic area. The full listing of these data items is available here as a downloadable compressed data base file named TABLES.ZIP. The uncompressed is in FoxPro data base file (dbf) format and may be imported to ACCESS, EXCEL, and other software formats. While all of this information is useful, the Office of Community Planning and Development has downloaded selected information for all states and areas and is making this information available on the CPD web pages. The tables and data items selected are those items used in the CDBG and HOME allocation formulas plus topics most pertinent to the Comprehensive Housing Affordability Strategy (CHAS), the Consolidated Plan, and similar overall economic and community development plans. The information is contained in five compressed (zipped) dbf tables for each state. When uncompressed the tables are ready for use with FoxPro and they can be imported into ACCESS, EXCEL, and other spreadsheet, GIS and database software. The data are at the block group summary level. The first two characters of the file name are the state abbreviation. The next two letters are BG for block group. Each record is labeled with the code and name of the city and county in which it is located so that the data can be summarized to higher-level geography. The last part of the file name describes the contents . The GEO file contains standard Census Bureau geographic identifiers for each block group, such as the metropolitan area code and congressional district code. The only data included in this table is total population and total housing units. POP1 and POP2 contain selected population variables and selected housing items are in the HU file. The MA05 table data is only for use by State CDBG grantees for the reporting of the racial composition of beneficiaries of Area Benefit activities. The complete package for a state consists of the dictionary file named TABLES, and the five data files for the state. The logical record number (LOGRECNO) links the records across tables.

    Context

There is no story behind this data.

These are just supplementary datasets which I plan on using for plotting county wise data on maps.. (in particular for using with my kernel : https://www.kaggle.com/stansilas/maps-are-beautiful-unemployment-is-not/)
As that data set didn't have the info I needed for plotting an interactive map using highcharter .

    Content

Since I noticed that most demographic datasets here on Kaggle, either have state code, state name, or county name + state name but not all of it i.e county name, fips code, state name + state code.

Using these two datasets one can get any combination of state county codes etc.

States.csv has State name + code
US counties.csv has county wise data.

    Description

This data collection relates ZIP codes to counties, to standard metropolitan statistical areas (SMSAs), and, in New England, to minor civil divisions (MCDs). The relationships between ZIP codes and other geographical units are based on 1979 boundaries, and changes since that time are not reflected. The Census Bureau used various sources to determine ZIP code-county or ZIP code-MCD relationships. In the cases where the sources were confusing or contradictory as to the geographical boundaries of a ZIP code, multiple ZIP-code records (each representing the territory contained in that ZIP-code area) were included in the data file. As a result, the file tends to overstate the ZIP code-county or ZIP code-MCD crossovers. The file is organized by ZIP code and is a byproduct of data used to administer the 1980 Census. Variables include ZIP codes, post office names, FIPS state and county codes, county or MCD names, and SMSA codes.

USE geoid TO JOIN DATA DOWNLOADED FROM DATA.CENSUS.GOV The TIGER/Line Shapefiles are extracts of selected geographic and cartographic information from the Census Bureau's Master Address File (MAF)/Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (TIGER) System (MTS). The TIGER/Line Shapefiles contain a standard geographic identifier (GEOID) for each entity that links to the GEOID in the data from censuses and surveys. The TIGER/Line Shapefiles do not include demographic data from surveys and censuses (e.g., Decennial Census, Economic Census, American Community Survey, and the Population Estimates Program). Other, non-census, data often have this standard geographic identifier as well. Data from many of the Census Bureau’s surveys and censuses, including the geographic codes needed to join to the TIGER/Line Shapefiles, are available at the Census Bureau’s public data dissemination website (https://data.census.gov/). The primary legal divisions of most states are termed counties. In Louisiana, these divisions are known as parishes. In Alaska, which has no counties, the equivalent entities are the organized boroughs, city and boroughs, municipalities, and census areas; the latter of which are delineated cooperatively for statistical purposes by the State of Alaska and the Census Bureau. Additionally, the Census Bureau treats the following entities as equivalents of counties for purposes of data presentation: municipios in Puerto Rico, districts and islands in American Samoa, municipalities in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and islands in the U.S. Virgin Islands. In four states (Maryland, Missouri, Nevada, and Virginia), there are one or more incorporated places that are independent of any county organization and, thus, constitute primary divisions of their states. These incorporated places are known as independent cities and are treated as equivalent entities for purposes of data presentation. The District of Columbia and Guam have no primary divisions, and each area is considered an equivalent entity for purposes of data presentation in decennial censuses. All of the counties in Connecticut and Rhode Island and nine counties in Massachusetts were dissolved as functioning governmental entities; however, the Census Bureau continues to present data for these historical entities in order to provide comparable geographic units at the county level of the geographic hierarchy for these states and represents them as nonfunctioning legal entities in data products. Each county or statistically equivalent entity is assigned a three-character numeric Federal Information Processing Series (FIPS) code based on alphabetical sequence that is unique within state, and an eight-digit National Standard (NS) code. Description

The property level flood risk statistics generated by the First Street Foundation Flood Model Version 2.0 come in CSV format.

The data that is included in the CSV includes:

An FSID; a First Street ID (FSID) is a unique identifier assigned to each location.

The latitude and longitude of a parcel as well as the zip code, census block group, census tract, county, congressional district, and state of a given parcel.

The property’s Flood Factor as well as data on economic loss.

The flood depth in centimeters at the low, medium, and high CMIP 4.5 climate scenarios for the 2, 5, 20, 100, and 500 year storms this year and in 30 years.

Data on the cumulative probability of a flood event exceeding the 0cm, 15cm, and 30cm threshold depth is provided at the low, medium, and high climate scenarios for this year and in 30 years.

Information on historical events and flood adaptation, such as ID and name.

This dataset includes First Street's aggregated flood risk summary statistics. The data is available in CSV format and is aggregated at the congressional district, county, and zip code level. The data allows you to compare FSF data with FEMA data. You can also view aggregated flood risk statistics for various modeled return periods (5-, 100-, and 500-year) and see how risk changes due to climate change (compare FSF 2020 and 2050 data). There are various Flood Factor risk score aggregations available including the average risk score for all properties (flood factor risk scores 1-10) and the average risk score for properties with risk (i.e. flood factor risk scores of 2 or greater). This is version 2.0 of the data and it covers the 50 United States and Puerto Rico. There will be updated versions to follow.

If you are interested in acquiring First Street flood data, you can request to access the data here. More information on First Street's flood risk statistics can be found here and information on First Street's hazards can be found here.
