    Description

These data were collected for use in of the RI Coastal Resource Management Council's Ocean Special Area Management Plan planning process and were also intended as an update and refinement to a similar set of maps created in 2004 by New England regional Sea Grant. This data layer was developed from September 2008 - January 2009, published in February 2009 and reviewed by fishermen and updated a final time in September - October 2009. Data were collected through interviews and mapping exercises conducted in person, both one-on-one and in small groups, with representatives of the RI Fishermen's Alliance, independent fishermen, and unaffiliated fishermen. Other RI fishermen's associations participated in the Ocean SAMP stakeholder process but, to date, have not yet participated in the data collection effort.

In each interview, fishermen were first given a brief introduction to the RI Ocean SAMP planning process and shown NOAA nautical charts of the SAMP area. Researchers then asked the fishermen to describe where they fish, and to draw polygons encompassing these areas on the nautical charts. Fishermen were then asked follow-up questions about these areas, including (1) During which seasons do you fish in each area?; (2) With what gear?; and in some cases (3) What are your target species in each area? Following these meetings, data were aggregated onto one set of charts, which were then compared with the 2004 maps to corroborate the current information. Charts were then scanned and georeferenced and polygons were digitized in order to create Geographic Information Systems (GIS) shapefiles. Attribute fields were created for the data layers to record available information about seasonality and gear type. It should be noted that this dataset has some limitations and data may be incomplete. In addition, these data do not include out-of-state fisheries which may be conducted within the SAMP area, such as the herring mid-water trawling fishery based out of other New England ports.

    Description

These datasets show commercial fisheries catch weight landings of directed fisheries and bycatch from the Scotian Shelf, the Bay of Fundy, and Georges Bank from NAFO Divisions 4VWX and the Canadian portions of 5Y and 5Z. Atlantic Canadian inter-regional maps of four species (Atlantic Halibut, Bluefin Tuna, Redfish and Scallop) are also included from NAFO Divisions 4RST, 3KLMNOP, and 2GHJ. Five-year composite maps (2014–2018) that aggregate catches for each map series are publicly available. The maps aggregate catch weight (kg) per 10 km2 hexagon grid cell for selected species, species groupings and gear types to identify important fishing areas. These maps may be used for decision making in coastal and oceans management, including marine spatial planning, environmental emergency response operations and protocols, Marine Stewardship Council certification processes, marine protected area networks, and ecological risk assessment. These datasets have been filtered to comply with the Government of Canada's privacy policy. Privacy assessments were conducted to identify NAFO unit areas containing data with less than five vessel IDs, licence IDs or fisher IDs. If this threshold was not met, catch weight locations were withheld from these unit areas to protect the identity or activity of individual vessels or companies. Maps were created for the following species, species groupings and gear types: 1. Groundfish (all species) 2. Groundfish Bottom Trawl 3. Groundfish Gillnet 4. Groundfish Bottom Longline 5. Description

This dataset contains summaries of NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) logbook data on effort distribution for NSW commercial fisheries in state marine and estuarine waters. The logbook data has been recorded and submitted to NSW DPI by commercial fishers. https://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/fishing/commercial/catch-effort

The data are aggregated to produce summaries of total effort by gear type (summarised across fishery), over 5 year periods and at a 0.1 degree resolution where 6 boats or more operate. All effort information has been removed for areas where less than 6 boats operate and these areas are mapped to a 1 degree resolution.

The 5 year period (2011-2015) corresponds to State of Environment (SoE) Reporting, required under the EPBC Act 1999. Each map layer is labelled by the years aggregated (“2015” for 2011-2015) and the gear type (“GNMN” = gillnet and mesh net). The gear codes and aggregated fisheries and the shape file field descriptions are listed separately in the Supplemental Information section.

The data were supplied for the purpose of research being undertaken by CSIRO under the National Environmental Science Programme (NESP) Marine Biodiversity Hub to produce an interactive map of pressures on the marine environment (at a broad spatial scale) that will enable a systematic understanding of the different pressures acting in different areas.

These datasets were manipulated and produced in aggregated maps by showing the intensity of VMS (and not the effort) by a methodology used in the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture. Since most of the vessels are under 12 m and have no VMS, these maps represents only a fraction of the Drifting Long Lines vessels - 7% of the vessels targeting swordfish. For this datasets of vessel trips targeting swordfish, at a speed of 2-3 knots (indicative of hauling) were taken into consideration. This data was funded by of one of the co-financed EU LIFE+ Funding Programmes - LIFE BaĦAR for N2K project.

    Description

In 2024, the Marine Institute published the Atlas of Commercial Fisheries around Ireland, fourth edition. This atlas provides a series of detailed maps of commercial fishing activity around Ireland with the aim of providing insights into fishing activities and fisheries resources. The atlas contains maps of: Fishing effort by vessels of all nationalities by gear type inside the Irish Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ); Fishing effort by Irish vessels gear type in all areas where it takes place for each; Landings taken by Irish vessels for the main commercially exploited species. The atlas is the fourth of its kind and is based on data from fishing vessels of =12m in length over the period 2018-2022. The vessel monitoring and logbook data that form the basis of the maps were collected under Council Regulation (EC) No. 1224/2009 and were aggregated and processed by the Marine Institute. Fishing is one of the most significant ocean uses in the waters around Ireland. However, the ocean is a shared resource and detailed spatial information on fishing activity is particularly relevant in the context of Ireland’s commitments to offshore wind energy and marine protected areas. The fisheries in Irish waters are highly diverse. A large part of this heterogeneity in the fisheries can be explained by spatial patterns in the availability of the target species and in this Atlas we aim to give insights into these fisheries by providing maps of fishing activities and landings of the most important fish and shellfish species. The maps produced for this atlas are available for download as geoTIFF files below.

An updated version of the data has also been included since the publication of the 'Atlas of Commercial Fisheries around Ireland, Fourth Edition 2024' to include 2019 - 2023 data and 2020-2024 data.”

    Description

Dataset of species/gear type commercial fisheries from 2012 to 2021 in the Eastern Canada Regions. Only fish harvested from the NL, Maritimes, Gulf, Quebec and Eastern Arctic regions are included (Species Sought). The data was obtained from Statistical Services, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) and consists of commercial species/gear type landings data from 2012 to 2021 taken from Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO) Subareas 0, 2, 3, 4 and 5 and fished in the NL, Maritimes, Gulf, Quebec and Eastern Arctic regions. The layer was created by overlaying a 2 minute hexagonal grid (approx. 10km2 cell) on species/gear type commercial fisheries point data and summing the total landings by weight reported for each cell over the ten year period. Therefore, the value of each grid cell is equal to the total species/gear type landings in kg from 2012 to 2021 for the area, and may represent many fishing events from several vessels over the ten year period. All landings are from Canadian vessels greater than 35-ft, and does not include information pertaining to international fishing vessels (i.e., St. Pierre). Individuals should exercise caution when interpreting this data. Data has not been altered and is mapped from the original logbook entry for each record prior to amalgamation. Data may contain errors such as inaccurate or nonviable coordinates, landed weights and/or species identification. For example, cases of fishing events reported in a NAFO Division with corresponding coordinates falling outside that particular NAFO Division or fishing events which appear to be located on a land mass due to rounding errors in the original entries. Such cases were excluded from the dataset. Only one location is given for each fishing event; therefore, a fishing activity that would normally cover a large area (i.e., trawling) is only shown in a single location. Some species may not include all records or locations where activity is taking place due to regional differences in permissions for mapping, or because the fishery is only partially georeferenced (e.g. Lobster). The locations/areas shown should only be used as an estimation of fishing intensity and a general guide of where particular species/gear type fishing occurs. This dataset has been privacy screened to comply with the Government of Canada's privacy policy. Privacy assessments were conducted to identify NAFO unit areas containing data with less than five vessel IDs, license IDs and fisher IDs. If this threshold was not met, catch weight locations have been withheld from these statistical areas to protect the identity or activity of individual vessels or companies. In some instances, permissions were obtained to map species or gears with a limited number of vessels, licenses, or fisher ids. The withheld areas are indicated by the unit area that has been removed and given a weight of -9999.

Where to Fish For Application New to the state? New to fishing? Want to find a new place to fish? Have you always wanted to catch a Black Crappie but don’t know where to go? Well then, check out CT DEEP Fisheries Division’s “Where to fish for…” application. This simple interactive map, co-developed by CT DEEP GIS and the Fisheries Division is intended to augment our “Fish with CARE” learn to fish events. At the events, the most common question by far was, “Where can I fish near me…”. This map provides the ideal solution for both novice and experienced anglers alike. The data powering the map was collected over the past decade through routine monitoring by the Fisheries Division of public lakes, ponds and the CT River. This new map joins two previously developed interactive maps, one for Rivers/Streams (Interactive Trout Stocking Map) and one for our shoreline access, charter boats, and tackle shops (Saltwater Resources map) also help to get people onto the fish. This video provides a quick tutorial on some of the key features.

    Description

SUPERSEDED - The version has been superseded. And a new edition is now available under the Atlas of Commercial Fisheries around Ireland, Fourth Edition, 2024. The atlas is the second of its kind and is based on data from fishing vessels of =15m in length over the period 2008-2012. The vessel monitoring and logbook data that form the basis of the maps were collected under Council Regulations (EC) No. 2371/2002 and 1224/2009 and were aggregated and processed by the Marine Institute.
