    Description
    About this dataset

    Context

The dataset tabulates the Fishers population over the last 20 plus years. It lists the population for each year, along with the year on year change in population, as well as the change in percentage terms for each year. The dataset can be utilized to understand the population change of Fishers across the last two decades. For example, using this dataset, we can identify if the population is declining or increasing. If there is a change, when the population peaked, or if it is still growing and has not reached its peak. We can also compare the trend with the overall trend of United States population over the same period of time.

    Key observations

In 2023, the population of Fishers was 104,094, a 1.90% increase year-by-year from 2022. Previously, in 2022, Fishers population was 102,150, an increase of 0.70% compared to a population of 101,444 in 2021. Over the last 20 plus years, between 2000 and 2023, population of Fishers increased by 61,706. In this period, the peak population was 104,094 in the year 2023. The numbers suggest that the population has not reached its peak yet and is showing a trend of further growth. Source: U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates Program (PEP).

    Description
    About this dataset

    Context

The dataset tabulates the data for the Fishers, IN population pyramid, which represents the Fishers population distribution across age and gender, using estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2019-2023 5-Year Estimates. It lists the male and female population for each age group, along with the total population for those age groups. Higher numbers at the bottom of the table suggest population growth, whereas higher numbers at the top indicate declining birth rates. Furthermore, the dataset can be utilized to understand the youth dependency ratio, old-age dependency ratio, total dependency ratio, and potential support ratio.

    Key observations

    • Youth dependency ratio, which is the number of children aged 0-14 per 100 persons aged 15-64, for Fishers, IN, is 32.5.
    • Old-age dependency ratio, which is the number of persons aged 65 or over per 100 persons aged 15-64, for Fishers, IN, is 16.4.
    • Total dependency ratio for Fishers, IN is 48.9.
    • Potential support ratio, which is the number of youth (working age population) per elderly, for Fishers, IN is 6.1.

    Description

Translocations are frequently used to restore extirpated carnivore populations. Understanding the factors that influence translocation success is important because carnivore translocations can be time consuming, expensive, and controversial. Using population viability software, we modeled reintroductions of the fisher, a candidate for endangered or threatened status in the Pacific states of the US. Our model predicts that the most important factor influencing successful re-establishment of a fisher population is the number of adult females reintroduced (provided some males are also released). Data from 38 translocations of fishers in North America, including 30 reintroductions, 5 augmentations and 3 introductions, show that the number of females released was, indeed, a good predictor of success but that the number of males released, geographic region and proximity of the source population to the release site were also important predictors. The contradiction between model and data regarding males may relate to the assumption in the model that all males are equally good breeders. We hypothesize that many males may need to be released to insure a sufficient number of good breeders are included, probably large males. Seventy-seven percent of reintroductions with known outcomes (success or failure) succeeded; all 5 augmentations succeeded; but none of the 3 introductions succeeded. Reintroductions were instrumental in reestablishing fisher populations within their historical range and expanding the range from its most-contracted state (43% of the historical range) to its current state (68% of the historical range). To increase the likelihood of translocation success, we recommend that managers: 1) release as many fishers as possible, 2) release more females than males (55–60% females) when possible, 3) release as many adults as possible, especially large males, 4) release fishers from a nearby source population, 5) conduct a formal feasibility assessment, and 6) develop a comprehensive implementation plan that includes an active monitoring program.

    Description

Artisanal fishers are a highly diverse group, with social, economic, and demographic differences shaping their fishing behaviors and interactions with fisheries resources. However, fisheries management often treats them as a homogenous group. This study aims to investigate the nuanced differences in characteristics, perceptions, and adaptive capacity of artisanal fishers in Tobago. Through face-to-face surveys conducted with 89 fishers at seven landing sites along Tobago's Caribbean coast, this study examined fisher demographics, fishing effort, and responses to changes in fish abundance, size, and demand. The survey instrument was deployed from June to December 2016 and vessel owners or one of their crew if the boat owners was not available at seven landing sites in Tobago. Sampling within each village was stratified according to the size of the fishing community or landing size based on site reconnaissance. Artisanal fishers were treated as a secondary sampling unit and selected using a mix of opportunistic and snowball sampling, resulting in a response rate of 15% (n = 89 responses). The survey instrument measured the socio-demographics, fishery characteristics, perceptions of changes in the fishery and environment, and adaptive capacity using hypothetical scenarios to changes in fish catch.

To measure the two variables, namely (a) Non-Hispanic population and (b) population as a percentage of the total Non-Hispanic population, we initially analyzed and categorized the data for each of the racial categories idetified by the US Census Bureau. It is ensured that the population estimates used in this dataset pertain exclusively to the identified racial categories, and are part of Non-Hispanic classification.

When available, the data consists of estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates Program (PEP).
