The Internet access indicator measures the prevalence of different Internet technology options available in Champaign County, Illinois, and the U.S., at two different speeds: 4/1 Mbps and 25/3 Mbps.
Seven types of connection options are evaluated: ADSL, cable, fiber, fixed wireless, satellite, "other" technology, and "any" technology, which includes the previous six options.
Satellite internet, at both speeds, is the most widely available in all three areas. One hundred percent of Champaign County residents have access to satellite internet at both speeds. Cable internet is also widely available across all three areas, and over 90 percent of Champaign County residents have access to cable internet. Fiber internet is the least widely available type of technology, aside from "other" technology. However, fiber internet is now available to almost 38 percent of Champaign County residents as of December 2020, an increase from approximately 25 percent in June 2020.
The ability of Champaign County residents to access the Internet has become key in many facets of life, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Internet access provides economic, educational, and social opportunities; having or not having Internet access has become not only a technological issue, but an equity issue.

Broadband service availability data from the FCC Broadband Data Collection, version 6, representing reported service as of 12/31/2024 analyzed to classify locations as:Served - fixed wireline service of greater than 100mb/s download and 20mb/s upload.Underserved - fixed wireline or terrestrial licensed fixed wireless service of greater than 25mb/s download and 3mb/s upload, but no fixed wireline service of greater than 100mb/s download and 20mb/s upload.Unserved - No fixed wireline of greater than or equal to 25mb/s download and 3mb/s upload.The total number of locations within each hexagon area, as well as the number of Served, Underserved, and Unserved locations is summarized in the attributes of the hexbin layers. In addition, the number of locations receiving funding through State, Local, and Federal funding programs in each hexbin is summarized in the hexbin layer. Eligible locations for the Completing Access to Broadband (CAB) program are defined as Unserved and Underserved locations that have not already received funding through another program. The total eligible locations within each hexbin is also provided in the attributes. This map seeks to highlight areas that are undeserved by terrestrial broadband (fiber/cable/dsl on the ground), with "underserved" defined as down/up speeds less than 25/3 Mbps.These data represent a static snapshot of provider reported coverage between January 2020 and June 2020. Maps also depict the locations of federally recognized tribes, Alaskan communities, ANCSA and borough boundaries.Broadband coverage is represented using provider reported speeds under the FCC Form 477 the amalgamated broadband speed measurement category based on Form 477 "All Terrestrial Broadband" as a proxy for coverage. This field is unique to the NBAM platform. These maps do not include satellite internet coverage (and may not include microwave coverage through the TERRA network for all connected areas).This map was produced by DCRA using data provided by NTIA through the NBAM platform as part of a joint data sharing agreement undertaken in the year 2021. The broadband score is an index based on the FCC’s minimum standard of broadband of 25 megabits per second (Mbps) download and 3 Mbps upload. A geography with speeds of 25/3 Mbps is awarded 100 points. Each type of geometry contains housing, population, and internet usage data taken from the following sources:US Census Bureau 2010 Census data (2010)USDA Non-Rural Areas (2013)FCC Form 477 Fixed Broadband Deployment Data (January - June 2021)FCC Population, Housing Unit, and Household Estimates (2019).
