Context

The dataset tabulates the Flagstaff population over the last 20 plus years. It lists the population for each year, along with the year on year change in population, as well as the change in percentage terms for each year. The dataset can be utilized to understand the population change of Flagstaff across the last two decades. For example, using this dataset, we can identify if the population is declining or increasing. If there is a change, when the population peaked, or if it is still growing and has not reached its peak. We can also compare the trend with the overall trend of United States population over the same period of time.

Comprehensive demographic dataset for Flagstaff, Sandy, UT, US including population statistics, household income, housing units, education levels, employment data, and transportation with year-over-year changes.

The Interstate 17 (I-17) elk herd primarily resides in Arizona’s GMU 6A and 11M south of Flagstaff. The population estimate for elk in GMU 6A was 6,500 in 2019. Their summer range consists of gentle topography with ponderosa pine forest and interspersed riparian-meadow habitat. Annually, the I-17 elk herd migrates an average of 24 miles to lower-elevation winter range dominated by pinyon-juniper habitat. This winter habitat is located along Oak Creek Canyon to the west and Wet Beaver Creek to the south. The I-17 elk herd faces high road mortality, averaging around 80 mortalities from vehicles per year (Gagnon et al 2013). Despite the high incidence of elk-vehicle collisions along I-17, road crossings are generally prevented from the highway’s high traffic volumes. These data provide the location of migration stopovers for elk (Cervus canadensis) in the Interstate 17 Herd in Arizona. They were developed using 106 migration sequences collected from a sample size of 47 adult elk comprising GPS locations collected every 2 hours.

The I-17 elk herd faces high road mortality, averaging around 80 mortalities from vehicles per year (Gagnon et al 2013). Despite the high incidence of elk-vehicle collisions along I-17, road crossings are generally prevented from the highway’s high traffic volumes. These data provide the location of winter ranges for elk (Cervus canadensis) in the Interstate 17 Herd in Arizona. They were developed using 60 winter range sequences collected from a sample size of 44 adult elk comprising GPS locations collected every 2 hours.

The North of Interstate 40 (I-40) elk (Cervus canadensis) herd makes an annual migration throughout some of Arizona’s high elevation landscapes west of Flagstaff. The bulk of the herd resides in Arizona’s Game Management Unit (GMU) 7W during the summer and during the winter many migrate to GMU 10. The GMU 7W population had an estimate of 4,300 individuals in 2019, while the GMU 10 population had an estimate of 3,200. Like many elk in Arizona, only a portion of the herd is migratory. Summer range contains ponderosa pine forests and open prairies near Government Prairie and Sitgreaves Mountain. In the winter, the elk transition to gradually lower elevations and habitats dominated by pinyon-juniper woodlands. I-40 and State Route 64 are primary threats to this migration corridor. Successful elk crossings of I-40 are rare, and research has shown that there are more than 65 elk-vehicle collisions/year along this stretch (Gagnon et al. 2012a,b). South of Interstate 40 mule deer reside in Game Management Units (GMU) 8 and 6B in Arizona. The herd summers in high-elevation open meadows and ponderosa pine habitat southwest of Flagstaff, Arizona. In late October, the herd migrates west to lower elevation pinyon-juniper and shrub habitats near the junction of Interstate 40 and U.S. Highway 89. With funding support by the U.S. Department of the Interior (USDI) through Secretarial Order 3362, research on this herd’s migration began in February 2020. Additional GPS collars were deployed in January 2022 with support from the U.S. Forest Service, Mule Deer Foundation, and other partners. Primary threats to the herd’s migration involve high volume roads including Interstate 40, and U.S. Highways 89 and 89A.
