The purpose of this project was to develop and pilot test an interviewer-administered self-report questionnaire that might be used in a subsequent national survey to scientifically establish the prevalence of second-party elder abuse or neglect. The project focused only on those living in the communities who were capable of accurately self-reporting their knowledge, attitudes, and practices. Through focus groups of adult protective services and abuse hot-line staff, questionnaire items were generated and later tested through interviews of clients of aging services in Florida. Aging services case managers screened and recruited 95 clients, aged 65 and older, with 25 clients who had reports of mistreatment within the hotline database, and 70 comparison clients (no reports of mistreatment). Groups were matched by gender and age within 10 years. The interviews were conducted over an 18-month period, of which 3 interviews were conducted in-person and 92 interviews were conducted by telephone. All interviews were conducted by trained interviewers of the research team. Twenty-six interviews were conducted in Spanish. Interviews focused on demographics; activities of daily living; 19 possible types of elder abuse or neglect within the previous year, and, for each positive response, questions about the perpetrators and their relationship to the older adult; a description of when the mistreatment happened, how often, what the respondent did, and whether it was related to the perpetrator's anger, neglect, or carelessness.

In 2021, about 5.96 million people aged 65 years or older were living in California -- the most out of any state. In that same year, Florida, Texas, New York, and Pennsylvania rounded out the top five states with the most people aged 65 and over living there.

These data are part of NACJD's Fast Track Release and are distributed as they there received from the data depositor. The files have been zipped by NACJD for release, but not checked or processed except of the removal of direct identifiers. Users should refer to the accompany readme file for a brief description of the files available with this collections and consult the investigator(s) if further information is needed.The objectives of the study were: (1) To determine the nature, incidence, and prevalence of fraud victimization among elderly consumers in Arizona and Florida; (2) To identify risk and protective factors associated with fraud victimization in this population; and (3) To evaluate the elderly population's awareness and use of state-based programs, including reporting behavior to law enforcement.The study is comprised of data from telephone surveys of 2,000 aged 60 years and older Arizona (n = 1,000) and Florida (n = 1,000). Additional information on the aging population in the United States

High birth rates during the so-called baby boom years that followed World War II followed by lower fertility and morality rates have left the United States with a serious challenge in the 21st Century. However, the issue of an aging population is certainly not an issue unique to the United States. The age distribution of the global population shows that other parts of the world face a similar issue.

Within the United States, the uneven distribution of populations aged 65 years and over among states offers both major challenges and potential solutions. On the one hand, federal action over the issue may be contentious as other states are set to harbor the costs of elderly care in states such as California and Florida. That said, domestic migration from comparably younger states may help to fill gaps in the workforce left by retirees in others.

Nonetheless, aging population issues are set to gain further prominence in the political and economic decisions made by policymakers regardless of the eventual distribution of America’s elderly. Analysis of the financial concerns of Americans by age shows many young people still decades from retirement hold strong concern over their eventual financial position.

IntroductionThe extant literature is limited regarding the correlates of COVID-19 worry and preventive measures among diverse, older adults following the peak of the pandemic. Purpose of the study is to determine the correlates of post-COVID-19 pandemic worry and preventive practices (i.e., social distancing, masking) among older adults.Materials and methodsIn 2022–2024, we conducted a cross-sectional survey of COVID-19 preventive behaviors, concerns, beliefs, and trusted sources of information in older adults in rural and urban/suburban settings in south-central Florida. A convenience sample of 522 English-speaking participants age 60 years or older were recruited using word-of-mouth, flyers, and recruitment events in urban, suburban, and rural settings. Comparisons were made for COVID-19 worry and preventive practices across key sociodemographic variables (e.g., age, sex, race/ethnicity, education, vaccination status, residence, and COVID-19 testing history) using multivariable linear and logistic regression models.ResultsParticipants (mean age 72 ± 9 years) were predominantly women (73%), Black (74%), and rural residents (57%). Greater COVID-19 worry was higher among participants who were younger, women, less educated, vaccinated, rural residents, never testing positive for COVID-19, and trusted authorities for health information. Black and Hispanic participants, as well as vaccinated individuals, were more likely to mask in public, while women and Black and Hispanic participants were more likely to practice social distancing.DiscussionPost-COVID-19 pandemic worry and preventive practices were correlated with demographics, vaccination status, and trust in health authorities. The findings underscore the importance of targeted public health messaging and interventions that consider the distinct needs and concerns of diverse older adult populations. This study’s explicit focus on sociodemographic differences provides valuable insights for designing more effective pandemic preparedness and response strategies tailored to vulnerable and diverse communities.

This study sought to understand perceived barriers to help-seeking for female victims of domestic abuse age 50 years and older (by a spouse, partner, adult child, grandchild, other relative or close friend) relative to the perceived barriers for women in the same age group who are not victims of such abuse. Additionally, the study explored the impact of key demographic variables of race and ethnicity, relationship to the presumed abuser, and age at the time of the survey on perceived barriers of victims. To address these research questions this study tested an empirical model that described relevant factors regarding perceived barriers to help-seeking and explored if and how this model changed based on the identified variables. Study participants represented a community sample of females age 50 years and older interested in participating in research regarding conflict in close personal relationships experienced by women in this target age range. Specific aims for the project were intended to lead to increased knowledge regarding perceived barriers to help-seeking among older women and, in particular, to develop a basis for describing (a) if and how these perceived barriers were unique to domestic abuse victims relative to non-victims in this age group and (b) how they varied based on selected variables.
