This dataset is a compilation and synthesis of secondary data in South Florida (Martin, Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade, and Monroe Counties) corresponding to the following topics: Human population changes near coral reefs, Economic impact of coral reef fishing to jurisdiction, Economic impact of dive/snorkel tourism to jurisdiction, Community well-being, Physical infrastructure, and Governance. Data are collected from a variety of publicly available sources to supplement primary data collected through resident surveys. These secondary data are collected to address topics outside the scope of NCRMP resident surveys, and are collected on an annual basis throughout the US coral reef jurisdictions. The primary data that were collected as part of this study in Florida are available in NCEI Accession 0161541.

How many domestic leisure trips do Americans take? The number of domestic leisure trips in the U.S. amounted to **** billion in 2022. As estimated, domestic leisure travels in the U.S. dropped to *** billion in 2020. This was due to travel restrictions related to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. It is forecast that the number of leisure trips will recover gradually during the following years, reaching * billion by 2026. The number of business trips, by comparison, is forecast to reach *** million that same year.

Layer will help District staff and utilities identify lodging facilities and associated rooms within their retail service area boundary. It will assist in the calculation of functional tourist population for the year of interest. Functional tourist population is the estimated average annual number of tourists in the service area per day. Please note that some of these lodging facilities are self-supplied.

The Bahamas experienced an increase of around 17 percent in the volume of inbound tourism in 2021, according to data published by the UNWTO. In that year, less than 900 thousand overnight tourist arrivals and 1.2 million same-day visitor arrivals were registered in the North American archipelago.

Profile of visitors to the Bahamas

Most of the people who visited the Bahamas in 2021 traveled for leisure or personal purposes. Only 31 thousand tourist arrivals to this destination were motivated by business or professional reasons. International tourists primarily arrived from other American countries, mostly from the United States, which is partly explained by the proximity of this islands to the state of Florida.

Impact of tourism in the Bahamas

In 2021, there were more than five visitors per inhabitant in the Bahamas. However, this relation was around 20 to one in pre-pandemic years. Due to this great influx of visitors, the Caribbean country’s economy has become highly dependent on tourism. For instance, visitor spending accounted for approximately one-third of the Bahamas GDP, which translated into a major blow during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic when this share went down to only 10 percent. In addition to this, tourism also contributes significantly to the country's employment in the service sector, which makes up nearly 90 percent of the total employment.
