This database is comprised of 951 participants who provided self-report data online in their school classrooms. The data was collected in 2016 and 2017. The dataset is comprised of 509 males (54%) and 442 females (46%). Their ages ranged from 12 to 16 years (M = 13.69, SD = 0.72). Seven participants did not report their age. The majority were born in Australia (N = 849, 89%). The next most common countries of birth were China (N = 24, 2.5%), the UK (N = 23, 2.4%), and the USA (N = 9, 0.9%). Social media use is ubiquitous during adolescence, and emerging research suggests an association with anxiety symptoms in some individuals. Two psychological constructs which may moderate this relationship are Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) and self-compassion. Higher FoMO tendencies may exacerbate the link between social media use and anxiety symptoms through greater fixation on social comparison, whereas higher self-compassion may weaken this link. The purpose of this study was to examine whether FoMO and self-compassion independently moderate the relationship between social media use and anxiety symptoms in adolescents. Participants included 951 adolescents (Mage = 13.69, SD = 0.72; 54% male). Online questionnaires assessed frequency of social media use, anxiety symptoms, FoMO, and self-compassion. FoMO moderated the relationship between social media use and anxiety, ΔR2 = .022, ΔF(1,945) = 26.26, p < .001. Increased social media use was associated with increased anxiety symptoms in adolescents high in FoMO and reduced anxiety for adolescents low in FoMO. Self-compassion was not a significant moderator. These findings have implications for social media use, public guidelines and clinical practice and support adoption of a discerning approach to adolescent’s social media use. We investigate a popular but underresearched concept, the fear of missing out (FOMO), on desirable experiences of which an individual is aware, but in which they do not partake. Through laboratory and field studies, we establish FOMO’s pervasiveness as a psychological phenomenon, present real-life contexts wherein FOMO may be experienced, and explore its behavioral consequences. Specifically, we show that FOMO poses a threat to loyalty by decreasing one’s intentions to repeat a current experience and may decrease the valuation of the current experience.

This study investigates the determinants of news-sharing behavior among Generation Z users on social media in Vietnam by integrating three theoretical frameworks: Newsworthiness Theory, Uses and Gratifications Theory (U&G), and the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). A structural equation modeling approach (PLS-SEM) was employed to examine the relationships between perceived news value (social significance, audience relevance), user gratifications (information seeking, socializing, status seeking, entertainment, and pass-time), and psychological drivers such as Fear of Missing Out (FoMO). Data were collected from a stratified random sample of 1.224 high school and university students across six socio-economic regions. The results reveal that social significance, audience relevance, and most gratification-based motivations—excluding pass-time—significantly influence the intention to share news. FoMO was found to positively moderate the impact of information seeking and status seeking on sharing intention. Furthermore, intention to share news significantly predicted actual news-sharing behavior, with inattention to news credibility acting as a mediating factor. The findings underscore the importance of both content attributes and user psychology in shaping digital news sharing among youth. Practical implications are discussed for media organizations aiming to enhance engagement and credibility in the digital era.

BackgroundProblematic smartphone use (PSU) has become a common phenomenon among college students. Fear of missing out (FoMO) is an important factor affecting PSU, but how FoMO affects PSU is not clear. Therefore, the mediating effect of positive and negative metacognitions about smartphone use (PMSU and NMSU) and the moderating effect of optimism are explored.Methods514 Chinese college students aged 17 to 25 from 6 Chinese universities were investigated with the Trait-State FoMO Scale, the Metacognitions about Smartphone Use Questionnaire, the Temperament Optimism Scale, and the Smartphone Addiction Scale for College Students. The data were analyzed with SPSS software.ResultsFoMO was positively associated with PSU, PMSU and NMSU mediated this association. Optimism moderated the relationship between FoMO and PSU, i.e., FoMO had a less prominent positive effect on PSU for college students with a high level of optimism.ConclusionsThere is a positive relationship which exists between FoMO and PSU among college students. In addition, PMSU and NMSU play mediating roles in FoMO and PSU, and optimism plays an moderating role in FoMO and PSU. These findings can help not only educators understand the predictors of PSU and develop interventions to effectively prevent PSU among college students but also college students reduce the level of PSU by improving their understanding of PMSU and NMSU and optimism level.
