Arab States have the highest prevalence rate of victims of forced labor worldwide as of 2021. In this region, there are on average *** victims of forced labor per 1,000 inhabitants. By comparison, Africa is the region with the lowest prevalence rate at ***. Interestingly, while Asia and the Pacific has the highest number of victims worldwide, it has the second lowest prevalence rate together with the Americas.
In 2022, forced labour in West Africa was most predominant in Nigeria and Benin. In each of these countries, over 1,200 victims of forced labor were registered. Cote d'Ivoire was another main country for this form of exploitation. Overall, human trafficking in African countries is a known concern.
Agriculture and farming was the most common industry of work for people trafficked for forced labor worldwide. Nearly 30 percent of the victims were forced to work in this industry. Moreover, 28 percent were working in the fishing industry, meaning that agriculture, forestry, and fishing by far was the most common industry for victims of human trafficking between 2012 and 2020. 40 percent of the trafficking victims in the world were trafficked for forced labor.
