    Description

Five pig head carrion were placed at least 7 m apart under cages in temperate mixed forest. Leaf litter was sampled 0 m, 1.5 m, and 3 m from each carrion weekly during summer, and monthly during autumn, until the first frost. Arthropods were extracted from leaf litter by using Berlese funnels. Associated temperature data was collected from average temperature for the summer was 25°C with 64% relative humidity with total precipitation of 12.5cm. Weather data was collected daily from ‘Taunton, Taunton Municipal Airport (KTAN)’ 41.88°N, -71.02°WElev: 43ft. via National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).Soil data was collected via a soil core at each distance from the carrion at each stage of decomposition and sent to Louisiana State University Agricultural Center for analysis.

    Description

The Environmental Science Services industry provides a range of testing services to businesses. Mining firms are significant users of environmental science services, and companies in other industries that invest significantly in research and development (R&D). Industry testing services include geotechnical modelling for stress analysis (typically provided to miners), meteorological services, weather station operation by the Bureau of Meteorology and material testing services for the Manufacturing division. Slumps in demand from key downstream markets like mining and agriculture have hurt the Environmental Science Services industry's performance over recent years. Drops in demand from the Mining division have weighed on the need for specialist geotechnical modelling and metallurgical analysis of samples. Yet, higher demand for forensic science services and strengthening government funding to the Bureau of Meteorology have benefited environmental service firms. Profit margins have expanded in recent years despite boosts in wages and the share of purchase costs in revenue. Industrywide revenue is expected to have inched downwards at an annualised 0.2% over the past five years, to total $6.6 billion in 2024-25, when revenue is anticipated to dip by an estimated 4.1%. The major companies in the Environmental Science Services industry are ALS and the Bureau of Meteorology, although the industry's broad scope leaves it fragmented. Government funding is a key revenue source for the industry, specifically in meteorological services and forensic science services, while government initiatives help to create demand in other segments. New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland make up the majority of businesses, while Western Australia is over-represented because of its booming mining sector. Mining demand is slated to trend downwards in the coming years, with major companies aiming to pivot into other segments of the industry. Hikes in demand from manufacturing, agriculture, scientific research services and water supply, sewerage and drainage services will help keep industry revenue afloat. At the same time, technological advancements are likely to alter the industry's product offerings. Industry revenue is projected to rise at an annualised 1.3% over the five years through 2029-30 to total $7.0 billion.

    Description

The Northern Hail Project (NHP) aims to improve knowledge of damaging hail storms and the detection of hail occurrence across Canada. NHP will also endeavour to improve severe convective storm prediction, mitigate against harm to people and property, and investigate future implications due to climate change. These weekly summary maps include damage surveys, hail swath sampling surveys, hail pad inspections, and a weekly update on the happenings of the NHP Field Team (see below). You can search for explore more hail data on the NHP Open Data Site. Follow us on Twitter @westernuNHP -------------------------------------------------- This week was a quiet weather week for the Northern Hail Project field team, with most of the team focused on completing research projects. Multiple damage survey teams visited Lacombe, AB and re-visited Consort, AB to conduct forensic hail damage surveys of affected areas after storms there earlier this season. The team also welcomed a guest from the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) hail study team. The IBHS brought mobile disdrometers to Alberta to be deployed ahead of hail producing thunderstorms.

    Description

This study investigated the association between weather, air pollution, and suicide risk in Sousse. Methods: A two-time series analysis examined suicide cases recorded in the forensic service of Farhat Hached University Hospital of Sousse, confirmed by autopsy, over seven years (2010-2016). Climate data were retrieved from the Monastir-Airport weather station, and air pollution data were obtained from the National Agency for Environmental Protection's modelling platform.

    Description

The investigation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) associated with decomposition is an emerging field in forensic taphonomy due to their importance in locating human remains using biological detectors such as insects and canines. A consistent decomposition VOC profile has not yet been elucidated due to the intrinsic impact of the environment on the decomposition process in different climatic zones. The study of decomposition VOCs has typically occurred during the warmer months to enable chemical profiling of all decomposition stages. The present study investigated the decomposition VOC profile in air during both warmer and cooler months in a moist, mid-latitude (Cfb) climate as decomposition occurs year-round in this environment. Pig carcasses (Sus scrofa domesticus L.) were placed on a soil surface to decompose naturally and their VOC profile was monitored during the winter and summer months. Corresponding control sites were also monitored to determine the natural VOC profile of the surrounding soil and vegetation. VOC samples were collected onto sorbent tubes and analyzed using comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography – time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC×GC-TOFMS). The summer months were characterized by higher temperatures and solar radiation, greater rainfall accumulation, and comparable humidity when compared to the winter months. The rate of decomposition was faster and the number and abundance of VOCs was proportionally higher in summer. However, a similar trend was observed in winter and summer demonstrating a rapid increase in VOC abundance during active decay with a second increase in abundance occurring later in the decomposition process. Sulfur-containing compounds, alcohols and ketones represented the most abundant classes of compounds in both seasons, although almost all 10 compound classes identified contributed to discriminating the stages of decomposition throughout both seasons. The advantages of GC×GC-TOFMS were demonstrated for detecting and identifying trace levels of VOCs, particularly ethers, which are rarely reported as decomposition VOCs.
