    Description

Data presented here is an extract of data taken from the Annual School Meal Census in publicly funded schools in Scotland. The data shows the provision of school meals (including free school meals) for each school in the Glasgow local authority area. The dataset forms part of a time series and is available for the years 2003 through to 2014. Full datasets can be downloaded from The Scottish Government. The data is graduated to school level and data includes: the numbers on the school roll; counts of pupils entitled to free school meals; counts of pupils present on the day of the survey, counts of pupils taking a school meal (free or not) on the day of the survey; and counts of pupils taking a free school meal on the day of the survey. In order to protect the identity of pupils a * used in the dataset denotes the number of pupils is 4 or less (zero included) or where such a figure could be worked out. A * * used in the dataset denotes where the difference between the number of pupils on the register and pupils with FME is 4 or less. Some of the datasets also include information on breakfast clubs, the provision of fresh fruit and water and the anonymity of the free school meal application process. The School Meal Census is carried out annually. For individual dataset errata or qualifications users should consult the background data or notes of the individual datasets. • 51,600 child protection plans came to an end in the year. 2,900 (5.6%) of these children had been the subject of a plan for 2 years or more.

All 28 tables from the publication are contained in the ‘Additional tables’ Excel document on this page.

Additional analysis of children in need by characteristics available through matching to the National Pupil Database (NPD) was published on 19 March 2013.

This analysis includes local authority (LA) and England information on matching rates, prevalence of special educational needs and free school meals, attainment at key stage 2, key stage 4 and progression between these key stages, as well as absence and exclusion rates all for children in need. The figures also include absence levels for children in need who were also subject to a child protection plan.

The following key points from the analysis relate to school age (5 to16 inclusive) children in need:

    • 86.5% matched to the NPD. Matching rates varied at local authority level from 8.5% to 100%.
    • 61.0% had special educational needs and 55.6% were eligible for free school meals
    • 41.3% achieved level 4 or above at key stage 2 in both English and maths
    • 33.7% achieved 5+ A*-C grades at key stage 4
    • 10.5% of school sessions were missed due to absence
    • 0.5% had at least one permanent exclusion from school

The tables from this additional analysis are contained in the ‘Additional tables’ Excel document on this page. Further details of the matching process and calculations included in these tables can be found in the accompanying methodology document.

    Description

The Pupil Referral Unit Census is a statutory return for all local authority maintained PRU's and alternative provision academies including alternative provision free schools in England. The Pupil Referral Unit Census collects information about individual pupils and information about the pupil referral units themselves, such as their educational provision. The individual pupil information collected includes free school meal eligibility, ethnicity, special educational needs, attendance and exclusions. The pupil referral unit census began in 2010 and was collected annually each year until January 2013. From January 2014 all pupil referral units, including alternative provision academies, will be required to submit termly data to the department as part of the School Census. Prior to the introduction of the pupil level Pupil Referral Unit Census, aggregated data was collected from Pupil Referral Units via the School Level Annual School Census.

    Description

This statistical first release (SFR) provides revised key stage 2 national curriculum assessment results for pupils in schools in England at national and local authority level for the academic year 2011 to 2012.

Information on attainment is also broken down by different pupil characteristics, specifically:

    • gender
    • ethnicity
    • first language
    • free school meal eligibility
    • disadvantage
    • special educational need
    • income deprivation affecting children index

This SFR also provides the updated percentage of pupils making expected progress in each of English and mathematics between key stage 1 and key stage 2, and updated data relating to impact indicator 3.7, the attainment gap at age 11 between pupils eligible for free school meals and the rest.

The revised figures are based on data checked by schools prior to publication in the primary school performance tables. The figures contained within this publication combine this revised data with the information gathered through the school census in January 2012.

Figures in this SFR update provisional figures released in September in SFR 19/2012.

The key points from this release are:

    • The percentage of pupils achieving the expected level, level 4 or above, in the 2012 key stage 2 reading and mathematics tests in all schools increased between 2011 and 2012.
    • This has led to an increase in the percentage of pupils in state-funded schools making expected progress in mathematics.
    • High-performing groups were Chinese pupils, pupils not known to be eligible for free school meals and pupils with no identified special educational needs.

In the academic year 2011 to 2012, due to local area free school meal initiatives, there has been both an under and an over recording of free school meal eligibility in some local authorities. The impact on National figures as a result of these mis-recordings is considered negligible. 2012 figures will be corrected in the December 2013 KS2 release.

School level data is available in the http://www.education.gov.uk/schools/performance/" class="govuk-link">primary school performance tables.

    Reference ID: SFR31/2011

    Publication type: Statistical first release

    Publication data: Local authority data

    Local authority data: LA data

    Region: England

    Release date: 15 December 2011

    Coverage status: Final

    Publication status: Published

This statistical first release (SFR) provides revised 2011 key stage 2 national curriculum assessment results for pupils (typically aged 11) in schools in England at national and local authority level.

Information on attainment has also been broken down by different pupil characteristics:

    • gender
    • ethnicity
    • English as a first language
    • free school meal eligibility
    • special educational needs
    • income deprivation affecting children index

This SFR also provides the updated percentage of pupils making expected progress in each of English and mathematics between key stage 1 (KS1) (typically age 7) and key stage 2 (KS2).

Two former SFRs, ‘National curriculum assessments at key stage 2’ and ‘Key stage 2 attainment by pupil characteristics” have been combined to produce this SFR, enabling a more comprehensive and coherent evaluation of pupils’ achievements at key stage 2 to be presented.

The revised figures are based on data used in the primary school (key stage 2) performance tables. The figures contained within this publication combine this revised data with the information gathered through the school census in January 2011. Figures in this SFR update provisional figures released in August in SFR18/2011. This SFR also provides the academic year 2010 to 2011 update to the characteristics SFR35/2010.

National curriculum tests are a measurement of achievement against the precise attainment targets of the national curriculum rather than any generalised concept of ability in any of the subject areas. The national curriculum standards have been designed so that most pupils will progress by approximately one level every two years. This means that by the end of key stage 2 (age 11), pupils are expected to achieve level 4.

All gaps and differences have been calculated on unrounded data therefore some figures may not add up in the following text.

    All schools

The percentages of pupils achieving the expected level, level 4 or above, in the 2011 key stage 2 tests by subject are as follows:

    • English 82% (up 2 percentage points from 80% in 2010)
    • reading 84% (up 1 percentage point from 83% in 2010)
    • writing 75% (up 4 percentage points from 71% in 2010)
    • mathematics 80% (up 1 percentage point from 79% in 2010)
    • both English and mathematics 74% (up 1 percentage point from 73% in 2010).

The percentages of pupils achieving above the expected level, level 5 or above, in the 2011 key stage 2 tests by subject are as follows:

    • English 29% (down 3 percentage points from 33% in 2010)
    • reading 43% (down 8 percentage points from 50% in 2010)
    • writing 20% (down 1 percentage point from 21% in 2010)
    • mathematics 35% (up 1 percentage point from 34% in 2010).

The percentages of pupils achieving level 4 or above in the 2011 key stage 2 teacher assessments by subject are as follows:

    • English 81% (no change from 2010)
    • mathematics 82% (no change from 2010)
    • science 85% (no change from 2010).

    Maintained mainstream schools

Pupils are expected to make two levels of progress between key stage 1 and key stage 2. The national percentages of pupils making the expected progress by subject are as follows:

    • English 85%
    • mathematics 83%.

The median average percentage of pupils making two levels of progress of all maintained mainstream schools is used as part of the current KS2 floor standard. This school level median by subject is as follows:

    • English 87%
    • mathematics 86%.

    Maintained schools: pupil characteristics

A higher percentage of pupils of Chinese, Indian, Irish and mixed white and Asian origin reached the expected level in both English and mathematics than their peers.

70% of pupils for whom English is not their first language achieved the expected level in both English and mathematics. For pupils whose first language is English, the percentage was 75%.

58% of pupils known to be eligible for free school meals (FSM) achieved the expected level in both English and mathematics compared with 78% of all other pupils (pupils known not to be eligible for FSM and pupils with unknown eligibility grouped together).

The percentage of pupils with special educational needs (SEN) without a statement who reached t

    Description

The ‘main text’ document includes information on:

    • children in need of social services
    • children referred to social services
    • assessments of children in need and their primary need at first assessment
    • section 47 enquiries (a local authority carries out one of these if they suspect a child is suffering, or likely to suffer, significant harm) and initial child protection conferences
    • children who were the subject of a child protection plan

The ‘main tables’ and first ‘methodology’ document relate to this publication.

We subsequently published the ‘outcomes tables’, showing figures that result from matching the children in need census to the national pupil database (NPD).

These tables show children in need by:

    • prevalence of free school meals (FSM)
    • special educational needs (SEN)
    • attainment
    • absence and exclusions

The ‘outcomes methodology’ document explains the matching process and calculations we used in these tables.
