Rail freight volumes in the United States have been genually increasing since 2016, reaching 2.53 trillion tonne-kilometers in 2018. However, this figure dropped again to 2.18 trillion tonne-kilometers in 2023. Rail Freight Owing to its geographic and economic size, the United States has one of the world’s largest freight rail networks. The most common commodities carried by rail in the U.S. are coal, chemicals and grain. Rail freight is especially suited to transporting bulk commodities such as these owing to the higher volumes that can be transported together, and the existence of specialized carriages, such as tank cars designed for transporting chemicals. Trucking in the United States Rail is only one segment of the U.S. freight industry, with trucking accounting for the vast majority of freight transported in the United States. While freight trucking also experienced a decline from the middle of the decade, revenue streams have since recovered to create a market worth almost 800 billion U.S. dollars. In total, there were over 862,000 heavy truck drivers in the U.S. in 2021.

Winter weather helps stabilize the freight market as volumes rebound, influencing tender rejection rates and spot vs. contract rates.
In the fiscal year 2022, approximately 4.19 billion metric tons of freight were transported domestically in Japan, down from a freight transportation volume of about 4.25 billion tons in the previous fiscal year. The freight volume declined with the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic.

About Transportation Services Index
The Transportation Services Index (TSI), created by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), measures the movement of freight and passengers. The index, which is seasonally adjusted, combines available data on freight traffic, as well as passenger travel, that have been weighted to yield a monthly measure of transportation services output.
For charts and discussion on the relationship of the TSI to the economy, see our Transportation as an Economic Indicator: Transportation Services Index page (https://data.bts.gov/stories/s/TET-indicator-1/9czv-tjte)
For release schedule see: https://www.bts.gov/newsroom/transportation-services-index-release-schedule
About seasonally-adjusted data
Statisticians use the process of seasonal-adjustment to uncover trends in data. Monthly data, for instance, are influenced by the number of days and the number of weekends in a month as well as by the timing of holidays and seasonal activity. These influences make it difficult to see underlying changes in the data. Statisticians use seasonal adjustment to control for these influences.
Controlling of seasonal influences allows measurement of real monthly changes; short and long term patterns of growth or decline; and turning points. Data for one month can be compared to data for any other month in the series and the data series can be ranked to find high and low points. Any observed differences are “real” differences; that is, they are differences brought about by changes in the data and not brought about by a change in the number of days or weekends in the month, the occurrence or non-occurrence of a holiday, or seasonal activity.

The Freight Road Transport industry operates the most extensive transport network of all freight modes, providing much-needed flexibility and the convenience of door-to-door haulage. The industry has historically offered faster and more reliable delivery times and less damage to goods than other freight methods, making it popular. According to Eurostat, over the past decade, road freight transport has outpaced rail freight transport in the EU, Europe’s second most popular mode of transportation. Yet, low barriers to entry have reduced the market share concentration and created a more fragmented industry, with enterprise numbers increasing over the past decade. Digitisation has proven to be a significant game changer, boosting efficiency and increasing customer satisfaction. Over the five years through 2024, industry revenue is expected to dip at a compound annual rate of 6.2% to €520.4 billion. The COVID-19 outbreak caused revenue to plummet over 2020 as industrial output slowed. Yet, accelerated e-commerce activity offered some opportunities for road freight companies during the year. Over 2021 and 2022, industry revenue remained weak, primarily because of truck driver shortages, soaring fuel prices and supply chain disruption. Brexit has also weighed on the flow of road freight between the EU and the UK, typified by customs delays and more paperwork. Over 2024, industry revenue is expected to drop by 3.3% as a driver shortage continues to weigh on operations. Over the five years through 2029, industry revenue is expected to climb at a compound annual rate of 0.8% to reach €540.6 billion. Expanding freight volumes as economic conditions improve will drive growth as long as companies can alleviate driver shortages. However, continued efforts made by European governments to promote less fuel-intensive transport methods, like rail and sea transport, will lessen the industry’s overall share of freight movements in the coming years. Road freight companies that adapt and integrate green vehicles into their fleets could drive off competition from the rail freight transportation industry.

The dry van truckload market, a cornerstone of the global logistics industry, is experiencing robust growth. With a 2025 market size of $15.23 billion (USD) and a projected Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 4.9% from 2025 to 2033, the market is poised for significant expansion. This growth is fueled by several key factors. The burgeoning e-commerce sector is driving demand for efficient and reliable last-mile delivery solutions, significantly increasing the need for dry van trucking services. Simultaneously, the expansion of global trade and increasing consumer demand for diverse goods are stimulating freight volumes. Furthermore, advancements in technology, such as telematics and route optimization software, are enhancing operational efficiency and reducing costs, further propelling market expansion. However, challenges remain, including driver shortages, fluctuating fuel prices, and increasing regulatory compliance costs. These factors influence the market's growth trajectory and require proactive management by market players. The segmentation of the dry van truckload market offers valuable insights into its structure. Key application segments include clothing and retail products, equipment and machinery, food and beverages, electronics, and others. While precise market shares for each segment are unavailable, the significant growth in e-commerce suggests that clothing and retail, food and beverage, and electronics segments are likely experiencing above-average growth rates. Geographically, North America, driven by the robust US economy and established logistics infrastructure, currently commands a significant market share. However, regions like Asia Pacific, particularly China and India, are demonstrating rapid growth potential due to their expanding economies and increasing industrialization. Major players in the market, including KSM Carrier Group, Schneider, USA Truck, and others, are actively competing through strategic investments in technology, fleet expansion, and route optimization to capture market share and meet the growing demand. The forecast period of 2025-2033 promises substantial growth opportunities, particularly for companies capable of adapting to the evolving dynamics of the industry.
