    Description

Over the past five years, the US household furniture manufacturing industry has faced a range of challenges, from housing market slowdowns to persistent inflation and volatile supply chains. As elevated mortgage rates and sky-high housing prices led to a drop in existing home sales, demand for new furniture softened, forcing manufacturers to refine their product offerings and optimize operational efficiency. Revenue has been expanding at a modest CAGR of 0.9% over the past five years and is expected to reach $28.0 billion in 2025, when revenue will fall by an estimated 0.7%. One significant trend shaping the industry has been shrinking profitability amid heightened costs and shifting consumer habits. Increased input prices, rising freight costs and ongoing inventory surpluses have weighed on industry profit, just as inflation and the threat of a recession make consumers more selective about large purchases. Many households are focusing on essential replacements, like mattresses and sofas, rather than discretionary purchases, prompting manufacturers to consolidate product lines and streamline inventory. Although select companies have taken advantage of “Made in USA” branding and tech investments to shore up their position, industry profit has still fallen over the period, and manufacturers continue to feel the pinch from heavy discounting and tough global competition. Looking ahead, the next five years are expected to bring gradual transformation but only muted growth for the industry. The outlook calls for a continued focus on essentials, increased innovation around multifunctional and sustainable furniture and deeper e-commerce integration as consumer habits evolve. With ongoing trade tensions and tariffs set to keep pressure on supply chains and costs, manufacturers will need to adapt quickly by diversifying suppliers, embracing new materials and enhancing automation. Over the next five years, revenue is forecast to rise at a CAGR of just 0.7%, reaching $29.0 billion in 2030. While opportunities exist in smart and sustainable product lines and expanded direct-to-consumer channels, manufacturers will have to stay agile and innovative to overcome ongoing economic and competitive headwinds.

    Description

Office furniture producers have endured significant volatility in recent years. Macroeconomic instability in recent years—including spiking unemployment, jumping interest rates, rising office rental vacancies and the declining value of private nonresidential construction—contributed to revenue losses for most years since 2020. However, furniture producers experienced growth in 2022 and 2023, driven by weakening unemployment and a recovering nonresidential construction sector. During this time, producers also benefited from popular return-to-office trends, creating a need for new furniture. These factors have contributed to revenue growing at an estimated CAGR of 0.8% to $30.3 billion through the end of 2025, including a 0.5% drop that year alone. International trade trends directly impact producers as low-cost, mass-produced imports generate significant competition to domestic producers. This trend has pushed domestic producers to focus on custom furniture, which faces little competition from imports as a service-oriented product line. Imported pieces generate more than 20.0% of revenue. Producers in countries like China, Mexico and Vietnam leverage lower operating costs to offer lower prices, appealing to price-sensitive buyers and driving domestic price-based competition. Domestic producers have been negatively impacted by heightened import penetration and enhanced price-based competition, driving them to lower prices to remain competitive and placing downward pressure on profit. The US Government has aimed to support domestic producers through tariffs on major trading partners, most of which target China. Tariff hikes, including those in 2018, have contributed to Chinese producers losing traction domestically. However, tariffs on major inputs, like Canadian lumber, will push purchase costs upward, forcing manufacturers to raise prices or slash profit. Office furniture manufacturing will continue to grow as unemployment and office rental vacancies drop. Growth in the value of private nonresidential construction will support revenue growth as investments in furniture will come along with overall real estate investment. The expected depreciation of the US dollar is also likely to weaken imports as a share of domestic demand, as imported pieces become comparatively more expensive and domestic furniture becomes comparatively more affordable to international buyers, supporting domestic production. However, domestic producers will continue to face elevated uncertainty over the coming years, driven by the ongoing trade war and more expensive inputs, driving manufacturers to adapt their pricing strategies. Moving forward, revenue is set to rise at a CAGR of 1.8% to $33.1 billion.

    Description

European furniture manufacturing revenue is slated to grow at a compound annual rate of 2.7% over the five years through 2025. A recent turbulent economic climate has weighed on furniture manufacturers' growth levels. Challenges initially stemmed from the COVID-19 pandemic but worsened with inflationary pressures. Macroeconomic headwinds weakened demand for new construction projects across most European countries in 2023 and 2024, reducing the number of new spaces that required furnishing. Businesses have increasingly preserved cash and opted to postpone or cancel significant construction projects, especially after interest rates were hiked to help combat soaring inflation, causing the cost of borrowing to spike. This dampened demand for furniture manufacturers, causing revenue growth to stagnate. Inflationary pressures also weakened disposable incomes and caused people to cut their discretionary spending, limiting furniture purchases. In 2025, revenue is expected to rise slightly by 0.9% to €175.8 billion. Revenue growth is supported by the improving global economic climate, easing inflation and falling interest rates. This is helping to lift consumer confidence, albeit the cost of living pressures are still on the mind of consumers and this is helping to lift spending on furniture slowly in faster-growing European countries like Spain. Construction activity is also increasing in Spain and Eastern Europe, with building permits on the rise again. More commercial and residential buildings will help boost furniture demand from new homeowners and corporate companies looking to fit out their offices. Still, in countries like Germany, the construction sector has a long road to recovery, which is continuing to subdue revenue growth in 2025. Over the five years through 2030, revenue is forecast to expand at a compound annual rate of 4.7% to reach €221.7 billion. The European economy is forecast to continue to improve as inflation eases, prompting central banks to lower interest rates. As interest rates fall, the cost of borrowing will follow suit, driving up the number of people meeting the affordability criteria for mortgages and spurring new construction activity from housebuilders, which will create a greater need for new furniture. Businesses will also be more likely to undertake significant construction projects and buy new furniture, creating more revenue opportunities for furniture makers.

Market Dynamics of Home Furniture Market

Key Drivers for Home Furniture Market

Increasing the Use of Biodegradable and Compostable Materials to Boost Market Growth

The global real estate market is experiencing growth, with many governments promoting affordable housing initiatives and private developers launching new residential projects. This has led to a rise in demand for home furniture to furnish these new homes. According to the National Association of REALTORS, 4.09 million existing homes were sold in 2023. In May 2024, new single-family home sales reached a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 619,000, as the U.S. Census Bureau reported. The Federal Reserve's 2022 Survey of Consumer Finances indicated that 66.1% of families owned their primary residence. Additionally, over 360,000 real estate brokerage firms are operating in the U.S. The booming rental housing market, particularly in metropolitan areas, is also driving demand, with renters seeking affordable, durable, and easily transportable furniture to furnish temporary homes, boosting sales in certain home furniture categories.

Increased Consumer Spending and Urbanization to Drive Market Growth

As disposable incomes rise, particularly in emerging economies such as India, China, and Brazil, consumers increasingly invest in high-quality home furniture. This shift is motivated by the desire to improve living conditions, aesthetics, and comfort. The trend of rapid urbanization is also driving demand for modern homes, which in turn fuels the need for contemporary furniture. People relocating to urban areas are more likely to furnish their homes according to modern styles. Globally, a growing portion of the population resides in cities. In 2012, 52.5% of the population lived in urban areas, and by 2022, this was projected to rise to 56.9%. The urban population share is generally higher in developed regions (79.7% in 2022) than in developing ones (52.3%). In least-developed countries (LDCs), urban residents remain the minority at 35.8%. In the U.S., among cities with populations of 1 million or more, Austin, TX, saw the fastest growth at 32.8%, followed by Raleigh, NC, at 25.1%, and Orlando, FL, at 22.7%. Austin, TX, also led in land conversion from rural to urban, with an 18.5% increase.

Restraint Factor for the Home Furniture Market

Fluctuating Raw Material Prices, will Limit Market Growth

The cost of key raw materials like wood, metal, foam, and fabrics is often highly volatile, directly affecting production costs for manufacturers. This can lead to higher prices for consumers, which may dampen demand. As the furniture market is global, with manufacturers sourcing materials and shipping products internationally, rising freight and shipping costs can significantly impact pricing—particularly for large, bulky items like sofas, beds, and dining tables, where transportation forms a major part of the overall cost structure. Additionally, the furniture manufacturing industry in developed countries faces labor shortages due to an aging workforce and rising wages. These labor challenges drive up production costs, especially in regions with high labor expenses like the U.S., Canada, and p...

    Description

According to Cognitive Market Research, The Global American Furniture market will grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.0% from 2023 to 2030.

The demand for American Furniture is rising due to the raising of people's discretionary incomes.
Demand for indoor remains higher in the American Furniture market.
The wood held the highest American Furniture market revenue share in 2023.
North America will continue to lead, whereas the Europe American Furniture market will experience the strongest growth until 2030.

Housing Market Strength to Provide Viable Market Output

A significant market driver for American Furniture has been strength. Housing demand was driven by low mortgage rates and people's need for greater room as they spent more time at home. Demand for furniture rose as more people looked for new residences or started remodeling projects. This tendency is anticipated to continue, with the housing sector being a major factor in supporting furniture purchases. Due to the increase in remote work, the requirement for dedicated home offices has also increased demand for office furniture. The housing market will continue to be a major factor driving the American furniture market as long as it remains robust.

E-commerce and Digitation to Propel Market Growth

The increasing use of e-commerce and digital transformation is a major factor propelling the American furniture business. The pandemic changed consumer behavior: furniture purchases are now made online. Manufacturers and retailers swiftly adjusted, strengthening their online presence and e-commerce skills. Thanks to this shift, customers could now shop for furniture online, even for larger purchases. Online shopping's ease and security have allowed furniture sales to grow significantly through e-commerce. The expansion of digital furniture retail is further fueled by the development of augmented reality and virtual showrooms, which offer immersive online furniture purchasing experiences. The American furniture market is changing, and one of the main factors driving this change is the continued digital transformation of the sector and the ease it provides to consumers.

Rise in disposable income and increased consumer spending will propel market growth

Market Dynamics of the American Furniture Market

Key Drivers of American Furniture Market

    Rising Homeownership and Renovation Activities

With increasing homeownership rates, especially among millennials and Gen Z, and a growing culture of home renovation and remodeling, demand for furniture—both essential and decorative—continues to rise. Government incentives for homebuyers and low mortgage rates (historically) have further accelerated the trend of furniture spending.

Growth of E-commerce and Omnichannel Retailing

Digital transformation in the furniture industry has enabled consumers to browse, customize, and purchase furniture online. Brands like Wayfair, Ashley, and IKEA have optimized omnichannel strategies that combine physical showrooms with online platforms, offering greater convenience, personalization, and access to a wider product range.

    Restraints of American Furniture Market

High Raw Material and Transportation Costs

The cost of wood, steel, foam, and upholstery materials has surged due to supply chain disruptions, tariffs, and inflation. Additionally, rising freight charges and labor costs have strained manufacturer margins and driven up retail prices, making furniture less affordable for certain customer segments.

Long Lead Times and Supply Chain Delays

The market has been affected by global shipping delays, port congestion, and shortages of key materials—particularly since the pandemic. Extended delivery timelines and backorders impact customer satisfaction and hinder inventory planning for retailers, leading to lost sales opportunities.

Key Trends of American Furniture Market

Growing Demand for Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Furniture

Consumers are increasingly favoring furniture made from reclaimed wood, recycled materials, and non-toxic finishes. Brands are responding with green certifications (e.g., FSC-certified wood), transparency in supply chains, and eco-conscious product lines—making sustainability a key market differentiator.
