    Description

This dataset was generated by parsing PDFs released by the US Treasury for foreign exchange. An edited version (quarterly-edited.csv) includes fixes for typos in the Treasury data.

    Usage caveats from the documentation:

"Exceptions to using the reporting rates as shown in the report are: * collections and refunds to be valued at specified rates set by international agreements, * conversions of one foreign currency into another, * foreign currencies sold for dollars, and * other types of transactions affecting dollar appropriations. (See Volume I Treasury Financial Manual 2-3200 for further details.)

Since the exchange rates in this report are not current rates of exchange, they should not be used to value transactions affecting dollar appropriations."

    Additional caveats:

This unified dataset should be used only for reference or ballpark estimation, and not for anything like automated valuation. The reason is because there's still a lot of messiness involving countries and changing units- when in doubt or if required, please do additional research to confirm the historical rates are indeed as stated.

    Future plans:

    • Clean this up so that it can indeed be used in an automated system for converting currencies
    • Fill in the missing entries
    • Standardize country names and currency names

    Description

A graphic that displays the dollar performance against other currencies reveals that economic developments had mixed results on currency exchanges. The third quarter of 2023 marked a period of disinflation in the euro area, while China's projected growth was projected to go up. The United States economy was said to have a relatively strong performance in Q3 2023, although growing capital market interest rate and the resumption of student loan repayments might dampen this growth at the end of 2023. A relatively weak Japanese yen Q3 2023 saw pressure from investors towards Japanese authorities on how they would respond to the situation surrounding the Japanese yen. The USD/JPY rate was close to ***, whereas analysts suspected it should be around ** given the country's purchase power parity. The main reason for this disparity is said to be the differences in central bank interest rates between the United States, the euro area, and Japan. Any future aggressive changes from, especially the U.S. Fed might lower those differences. Financial markets responded somewhat disappoint when Japan did not announce major plans to tackle the situation. Potential rent decreases in 2024 Central bank rates peak in 2023, although it is expected that some of these will decline in early 2024. That said, analysts expect overall policies will remain restrictive. For example, the Bank of England's interest rate remained unchanged at **** percent in Q3 2023. It is believed the United Kingdom's central bank will ease its interest rate in 2024 but less than either the U.S. Fed or the European Central Bank. This should be a positive development for the pound compared to either the euro or the dollar.

    Description

We examine directional predictability in foreign exchange markets using a model-free statistical evaluation procedure. Based on a sample of foreign exchange spot rates and futures prices in six major currencies, we document strong evidence that the directions of foreign exchange returns are predictable not only by the past history of foreign exchange returns, but also the past history of interest rate differentials, suggesting that the latter can be a useful predictor of the directions of future foreign exchange rates. This evidence becomes stronger when the direction of larger changes is considered. We further document that despite the weak conditional mean dynamics of foreign exchange returns, directional predictability can be explained by strong dependence derived from higher-order conditional moments such as the volatility, skewness and kurtosis of past foreign exchange returns. Moreover, the conditional mean dynamics of interest rate differentials contributes significantly to directional predictability. We also examine the co-movements between two foreign exchange rates, particularly the co-movements of joint large changes. There exists strong evidence that the directions of joint changes are predictable using past foreign exchange returns and interest rate differentials. Furthermore, both individual currency returns and interest rate differentials are also useful in predicting the directions of joint changes. Several sources can explain this directional predictability of joint changes, including the level and volatility of underlying currency returns.

    Description

The euro-to-dollar exchange rate fluctuated significantly in 2022, reaching its lowest recorded value since 2008 during that time. Figures were different later in the year, however, with a rate of 1.17 USD recorded at the end of June 27, 2025. The average (standardized) measure is based on the calculation of many observations throughout the period in question. It is therefore different from an annual measure at a point, which reflects concrete values as of end of the year. Establishment The euro, which was established in 1992, introduced in non-physical form in 1999 and finally rolled out in 2002, is used by 19 of the 27 member states of the European Union. This group of 19 countries is otherwise known as the eurozone or euro area. By 2018, the total value of euro currency in circulation was almost 1.2 trillion euros, or over 3.4 thousand euros per capita. Euro to USD Between 2001 and 2008, the average annual exchange rate of the euro to the U.S. dollar noted a steep increase. In 2008, the euro to U.S. dollar annual average exchange rate was equal to 1.47, which meant that one euro could buy 1.47 U.S. dollars. By 2019, this value had decreased overall, to a value of 1.12 which meant that one euro could buy 1.12 U.S. dollars. Similar dynamics in the euro to U.S. dollar exchange rate were also reflected in the monthly exchange rate recently.

    Description

Current and historical exchanges rates for 120+ currencies relative to USD provided in bulk and via API. Earliest historical data is 2011-09-31.

    Data

Every hour, Currency Bot queries a currency conversion provider (currency.me.uk, formerly the Google Calculator API, and potentially a few others in the near future) collecting all the conversion rates for all currencies one-by-one, then saving them into a formatted API JSON file and pushing it to GitHub for everyone to use as an open-source API.

You can use this data to perform JavaScript currency conversion on the client-side (eg. for a web-app or online store - try money.js) or for back-end processing (eg. databases, analytics, whatever).

It's mirrored on http://openexchangerates.org with friendly Access-Control HTTP headers, so that you can load it in via AJAX with a cross-domain request without worrying about browser security restrictions.

As with all exchange rate data, accuracy can never be guaranteed when you're not paying through the teeth for the service - and when money changes currencies, everyone takes a cut (not to be trusted!) - so it's a good idea to inform people that these are for informational purposes only, something like "Converted prices/exchange rates are for informational purposes only." Feel free to say that rates come form the Open Source Exchange Rates API.

    Openness: Not Open

Update: 2012-07-16. Data is not open (non-commercial restrictions). To quote from the the license page:

The Data available through the Service and the Project is released under a non-commercial license. This means that you may not resell or directly profit from, or cause any entity to profit from, direct sale or provision of the Data.

You may use the Data to build services that are informed by it inside commercial applications (for example, a currency conversion widget for shopping cart software, or to provide points of reference for statistical diagrams and graphs).

In a nutshell: You are not permitted to sell or profit directly from the Data, or by providing access to the Data; but you are permitted to use it inside commercial applications, provided that the Data itself is not the product being sold or direct cause of any profit.

Note also that the data does not originate from this project but is sourced from elsewhere. As such it's not clear what exactly its openness is. Again to quote from the license page:

No laws or legal policies are broken in order to collect the Data. Having obeyed Terms and Conditions and related directives, the Project can and will not be held liable for legal claim or damages caused by collection, or usage by any party, of this Data.

    Foreign Exchange Market Outlook

The foreign exchange market, or forex market, is projected to experience robust growth over the coming years, with the market size anticipated to increase from approximately USD 2.4 trillion in 2023 to an estimated USD 3.5 trillion by 2032, reflecting a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.2%. This growth is driven by a combination of factors, including the increasing global trade activities, the rise of digital trading platforms, and the greater participation of retail investors. Furthermore, advancements in technology, particularly in electronic trading platforms, have democratized forex trading, making it more accessible to individual investors and contributing significantly to the market expansion.

One of the primary growth factors for the foreign exchange market is the surge in international trade. As globalization continues to advance, businesses and governments are engaging in cross-border transactions more than ever before, necessitating currency exchanges. The need for hedging against foreign exchange risk is a crucial driver for forex demand, as businesses seek to mitigate the risks associated with currency fluctuations. Additionally, emerging markets are becoming increasingly significant players in global trade, leading to a greater volume of foreign exchange transactions. The increasing economic interdependence among nations has thus considerably bolstered the forex market.

The proliferation of digital trading platforms has also played a pivotal role in the forex market's growth. Innovations in financial technology have revolutionized trading environments, making them more efficient and user-friendly. The rise of electronic trading platforms has allowed for seamless transactions and real-time exchange rate monitoring, attracting a larger number of individual investors to the market. This technological enhancement has not only increased market liquidity but has also improved transaction speed and accuracy, thereby increasing the overall appeal of forex trading to a broader audience, including retail investors who were previously sidelined in such markets.

Geopolitical developments and macroeconomic policies have substantial impacts on the foreign exchange market. Government regulations, monetary policies, and international economic agreements can lead to significant currency fluctuations, thus affecting forex trading volumes. Central banks around the world, with their monetary policies, directly influence currency values, impacting the forex market. Political events such as elections, trade wars, and global health crises like the COVID-19 pandemic have demonstrated their potential to create volatility in currency markets, driving up trading volumes as investors seek to capitalize on or hedge against these fluctuations.

The regional outlook for the foreign exchange market highlights varying levels of growth across different geographies. North America leads the market, driven by the presence of major financial institutions and a high level of trading activity. Europe also holds a significant share due to its well-established financial markets and the presence of the Euro, a major global currency. The Asia Pacific region is poised for substantial growth, spurred by the economic rise of countries like China and India, which are increasingly engaging in international trade. Latin America and the Middle East & Africa, although smaller in market size, are expected to witness steady growth as they continue to integrate into the global economy and develop their financial infrastructures.

    Type Analysis

The foreign exchange market is categorized by types such as spot, forward, swap, and options, each serving distinct purposes and client needs. Spot transactions, which involve the immediate exchange of currencies at current market rates, constitute a significant portion of forex trading due to their simplicity and liquidity. The ease with which spot trades can be executed provides a straightforward means for participants to engage in the forex market, catering predominantly to retail traders and smaller transactions. The immediacy of spot trading makes it particularly attractive for those seeking to capitalize on short-term currency fluctuations and provides a foundational understanding for many entering the forex market.

Forward contracts represent another critical segment. These are agreements to exchange currencies at a future date at a predetermined rate, providing a hedge against future currency risk. Forward contracts are particularly valuable for corporations and financial institutions that engage in international
