    The country is divided into 31 administrative counties/cities. There are now 26 administrative counties including the five administrative counties of Cork County, Galway County, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown, Fingal and South Dublin.
    There are 5 city/city and county areas namely Cork City, Dublin City, Galway City, Limerick City and County and Waterford City and County.

    County councils and borough councils were created in Ireland under the 1898 Local Government Act. The 2001 Local Government Act renamed borough councils to city councils. The Local Government Reform Act 2014 provided for the creation of the City & County Councils of Limerick and Waterford and the amalgamation of North Tipperary and South Tipperary county councils. The country is currently divided into 31 local authorities. There are 26 County Councils including the 3 in Co Dublin, (Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown, Fingal, South Dublin).     Description

    In census reports the country is divided into 29 counties/administrative counties and the five Cities which represent the local authority areas. Outside Dublin there are 27 administrative counties and four Cities, i.e. Cork, Limerick, Waterford and Galway. In Dublin the four local authority areas are identified separately, i.e. Dublin City and the three administrative counties of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown, Fingal and South Dublin.

    Description

    Municipal districts where created under the Local Government Reform Act of 2014 and are subdivisions of local authorities. Municipal districts are comprised of one or more Local Election Areas. Municipal districts are known as Borough Districts in Clonmel, Wexford, Drogheda and Sligo and Metropolitan Districts in Limerick and Waterford. Kilkenny is designated as the Municipal District of Kilkenny. The City councils of Dublin, Cork and Galway as well as Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown, Fingal, and South Dublin County Councils are not covered by Municipal districts. The current districts, with the exception of Cork, were defined in a series of Local Electoral Areas and Municipal District Orders (Statutory Instruments) in 2018. Municipal Districts for the County Cork are defined in the County of Cork Local Electoral Areas and Municipal Districts Order (S.I. No. 28/2019). There are currently 100 Municipal Districts. Details include the occupancy status of dwellings. Census 2022 theme 6 is Housing. The country is divided into 31 administrative counties/cities. Outside Dublin, there are 23 administrative counties and four cities: Cork, Limerick, Waterford and Galway. There are four local authority areas in Dublin: Dublin City and the three administrative counties of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown, Fingal and South Dublin. The Local Government Reform Act 2014 Section 9 provided for the amalgamation of the city and county councils in Limerick, Waterford, and North Tipperary and South Tipperary County Councils.Coordinate reference system: Irish Transverse Mercator (EPSG 2157). These boundaries are based on 20m generalised boundaries sourced from Tailte Éireann Open Data Portal. This dataset is provided by Tailte Éireann, Administrative Counties 2019
