    Description

As of 2024, the United States had a trade deficit of about *** billion U.S. dollars. The U.S. trade deficit has increased since 2009, peaking in 2022. Most recently, 2023 marked the year when the U.S. trade deficit decreased from the previous year. What is trade deficit? A trade deficit is, quite simply, the total value of a country’s imports of goods and services minus the total value of its exports of goods and services. When a country exports more than it imports, it has a trade surplus, and when it imports more than it exports, it has a trade deficit. A trade deficit can mean one of two things: Either the country is failing to produce enough goods for its citizens, or its citizens are wealthy enough to purchase more goods than the country produces (as is the case with the United States). Trading partners The United States’ top export partners are its closest neighbors, Canada and Mexico, due in part to the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which, pending ratification, will be replaced by the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). Regarding imports to the U.S., China takes the top spot, followed by Mexico and Canada.

    Description

This report presents an analysis of majority women-owned, equally owned and men-owned small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that export. Prior research found that women-owned SMEs were underrepresented amongst exporters. The implications are that businesses owned by women would not benefit as much as the other businesses from the opportunities international trade offers. However, the proportion of women-owned SMEs that export dramatically increased between 2011 and 2017 nearly completely closing the export participation gap. Two factors are identified as having contributed to this important change. First, women’s enterprises tend to be smaller, but a rising number of businesses with 1 to 19 employees exported in 2017 compared to 2011. Second, women-owned SMEs are now better represented in industries prone to exporting. As such, the export gap has significantly narrowed. Nonetheless, the entrepreneurial gap persists, women-owned SMEs still represent less than 16 percent of all SMEs, and a small gap was identified in the proportion of revenues from exports between women-owned enterprises and other firms.

    Description

The development of the Internet is often seen as a source of demand for skilled workers and therefore a potential driver of the wage gap between skilled and unskilled workers. This paper focuses on the impact that international trade in online platforms has on the skilled-unskilled wage gap. Because online trade allows smaller firms with relatively more unskilled workers to access world markets, one can expect an expansion of online exports to reduce the wage gap. After correcting for potential endogeneity bias in a sample of 22 developing countries for which online trade and wage gap data can be matched, we find that a 1 percent increase in the share of online exports over GDP leads to a 0.01 percent decline in the skilled-unskilled wage gap.

    Nicaragua
    Description

In 2023, Nicaragua’s number one most exported product was gold. This raw, semi-manufactured or powdered commodity contributed approximately 1.1 billion U.S. dollars to the Nicaraguan total export value. At around 609 million dollars, coffee was the second most exported product in Nicaragua. It was followed by frozen, fresh, and refrigerated bovine meats that, combined, made up roughly 690 million dollars of the exported value for this Central American country. In addition to being the most important export products for Nicaragua, both gold and coffee, were among the top ten most exported goods in Central America.

    Nicaragua’s leading trade partners

Whereas several Central American countries were among the lead trading partners of Nicaragua, it was the United States that led the list. The United States was by far the main trade partner of Nicaragua, both in terms of import and export, exceeding a total trade value of 6.8 billion U.S. dollars in 2022. In the case of China, however, the trade balance is rather uneven, as Nicaragua imported significantly more than it exported. This means that China is among the top ten main destinations of Nicaraguan exports, but not on the list of origin countries regarding imports.

    Decline in Nicaraguan trade balance

The above-mentioned gap between import and export value in the case of China becomes even more relevant when looking at the trade balance of goods in Nicaragua over the past 10 years. Despite experiencing small fluctuations, Nicaragua has not registered a single trade surplus (positive trade balance) since 2012. The trade deficit in 2022 has, however, only slightly increased compared to the previous year.
