This data publication contains three files related to the paper “Can We Measure from the Bottom Up? Constructing an Index of Gas Station Infrastructure to Identify Regional Economic Development”.
The two .csv files, gsi_region_summary.csv and merged_gasstations_dataset.csv provide the results upon which the analysis is based. The regional summary file reports aggregated Gas Station Index (GSI) scores across 62 NUTS2/3 regions in nine European countries, while the merged dataset contains station-level observations and amenity attributes used in constructing the index.
The accompanying GSI.zip file is a full replication package that includes the processing scripts and methodology pipeline necessary to reproduce the results.
The central research hypothesis is that gas station infrastructure—measured through service quality, amenity density and variety, and accessibility—encodes systematic information about local purchasing power, mobility, and consumption, and can therefore serve as a reliable proxy for regional economic development. Using ~19,000 geospatially tagged gas stations, the GSI explains about 65% of cross-regional variation in GDP per capita. The data can be used to replicate the construction of the index, conduct robustness checks, and extend the methodology to other regions.
By providing both station-level and region-level data, this dataset enables users to interpret the relationship between infrastructure nodes and economic outcomes, test alternative weighting schemes, and explore spatial development patterns such as transit corridors, capital city dominance, and peripheral stagnation.

The share of electricity production from oil. gas and coal sources of total electricity production. Sources of electricity refer to the inputs used to generate electricity. Oil refers to crude oil and petroleum products. Gas refers to natural gas but excludes natural gas liquids. Coal refers to all coal and brown coal, both primary (including hard coal and lignite-brown coal) and derived fuels (including patent fuel, coke oven coke, gas coke, coke oven gas, and blast furnace gas). Peat is also included in this category.

Abstract of associated article: Evidence exists that global natural gas markets have become more integrated over time. One possible explanation for this increased level of integration is that increased liquefied natural gas trade has increased the opportunity for price arbitrage by decreasing transport costs. If this explanation is true, then the natural gas market should become relatively more integrated because countries separated by large distances would be more willing to trade with each other. We employ a gravity model to test whether trade in liquefied natural gas has helped to de-regionalize the total natural gas market, using trade in the compressed natural gas market as a comparison benchmark. The results indicate that liquefied natural gas is indeed a global commodity, whereas the compressed natural gas markets are more regional. Importantly, we find that trade in liquefied natural gas has de-regionalized the total natural gas market.

This paper focuses on the MENA hydrocarbon-producing countries in the GCC and North Africa. We use annual data from 8 MENA region countries: Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, and the UAE from 1990 to 2022. In cases where data is missing for select natural gas and commodity price, the missing values are estimated using simple interpolation methods. The country-specific natural gas demand data is sourced from the International Energy Agency (IAE) and reported in bcm. Population data is taken from the IMF and reported in Millions of people. The income-related data are sourced from the UN database. Natural gas and electricity prices are collected using various sources including IEA, OAPEC, IMF and other papers reporting prices (Amansih, 2017); Shebanah et al. (2020). Diesel prices are based on IEA data. Natural gas, diesel, and electricity prices are reported in constant dollars and calculated using the GDP deflator sourced from the World Bank. In the case of Egypt and Oman real prices, missing values for gas and electricity prices before 2003 are estimated by backwards extrapolation using regional averages. The matlab code used for the analysis is also provided.
