Graph and download economic data for Average Price: Gasoline, All Types (Cost per Gallon/3.785 Liters) in Urban Alaska (CBSA) (APUS49G7471A) from Jan 1978 to May 2025 about AK, energy, gas, urban, retail, price, and USA.
The Alaska Fuel Price Report was originally created in 2005 to provide information about actual energy costs across Alaska. These data were used to inform decision making relating to grant and loan programs administered by the Alaska Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development.Since the initial report in 2005, the Division of Community and Regional Affairs (DCRA) has conducted 38 surveys to obtain heating fuel and gasoline prices from 100 selected Alaskan communities. At the time the survey was launched, the national AAA fuel survey only reported Anchorage and Mat-Su pricing so these areas were deliberately excluded from the 100 select communities. For nearly twenty years, DCRA fuel survey data have been used by public and private entities as a consistent frame of reference for gasoline and heating fuel prices over time.
Beginning in 2005, the Division of Community and Regional Affairs began collecting prices of heating fuel and unleaded gasoline in 100 select communities. The communities have remained constant since the project’s inception. The prices for unleaded gasoline in these 100 communities are collected via a telephone survey of each fuel retailer and reflect an “at the pump” price per gallon (including tax) on the day of contact. The survey is generally conducted once during the summer and once during the winter in any given year.

Most communities in the western and interior parts of the state rely primarily on electricity generated with diesel fuel. These communities had the most expensive electricity in 2011. Most remote rural communities are eligible for the Power Cost Equalization (PCE) program instituted by the state to offset the high fuel prices in these communities. The program pays 95% of residential electricity cost However, the program has not been fully funded by the Legislature in 15 out of its 25 years of existence, and electricity rates in rural Alaska with PCE are still higher than in urban Alaska. There has been a recent dramatic increase in fuel prices throughout Alaska. This dataset shows the change in price of a gallon of diesel over the 1991-2000 and 2000-2010 decades. Prices are inflation adjusted 2013 US dollars.
West Virginia and Kansas had the lowest cost of living across all U.S. states, with composite costs being half of those found in Hawaii. This was according to a composite index that compares prices for various goods and services on a state-by-state basis. In West Virginia, the cost of living index amounted to **** — well below the national benchmark of 100. Virginia— which had an index value of ***** — was only slightly above that benchmark. Expensive places to live included Hawaii, Massachusetts, and California. Housing costs in the U.S. Housing is usually the highest expense in a household’s budget. In 2023, the average house sold for approximately ******* U.S. dollars, but house prices in the Northeast and West regions were significantly higher. Conversely, the South had some of the least expensive housing. In West Virginia, Mississippi, and Louisiana, the median price of the typical single-family home was less than ******* U.S. dollars. That makes living expenses in these states significantly lower than in states such as Hawaii and California, where housing is much pricier. What other expenses affect the cost of living? Utility costs such as electricity, natural gas, water, and internet also influence the cost of living. In Alaska, Hawaii, and Connecticut, the average monthly utility cost exceeded *** U.S. dollars. That was because of the significantly higher prices for electricity and natural gas in these states.
