    Description

Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate gender stereotyping during episodes of spontaneous pretend play among children adopted by gay male couples. Gender stereotyping in children's play has been reported in different contexts, regarding discussions on their biological, cultural and individual determination. This work is a naturalistic observational study that involved 13 children aged 3-7 years during 16 observation sessions in a Day care playroom. A total of 123 episodes were analyzed, which were categorized by group's formation (number of participants and gender); type and theme of the play; and use of objects. Significant differences were found for all criteria that characterize the play as gender-typed. These findings corroborate other studies among children raised by heterosexual couples. Boys had episodes in larger groups and themes that required more use of space, while girls played in smaller groups and used more toys.

    Description

BACKGROUND The script editor researched issues central to LGBT communities with an overall directive to make them relatable by a heterosexual audience. Script editor consulted Literature, scripts and film case studies to address research questions - How to portray a family where both parents are male and gay? How do child adoption laws apply to gay couples? What are screen conventions in a range of gay issue films? These questions are at the core of the script development process where we examined challenges facing a gay couple adopting a child. CONTRIBUTION As script editor, Dethridge provided new knowledge of script editing practice; checking the producers' ethical, industry, legal and moral responsibilities in relation to their artistic objectives. She analysed literature and case studies related to same sex marriage and Australian adoption law and examined screen conventions related to depictions of gay sex and drug use on screen. She negotiated with screenwriter/director and producers over controversial scenes, researching filmic and ethical questions around the notion of 'queer cinema'. She negotiated the depiction of gay love; drug use and unconventional family arrangements assuring clarity and fairness. She researched narrative technique in case studies of gay family films including Mrs Doubtfire and La Cage aux Folles. As a result of this research, the script is highly innovative, blending conventional storytelling techniques with an account of gay marriage, adoption and drug addiction in contemporary society. SIGNIFICANCE Film gained international critical acclaim at Melbourne Queer Film Festival 2015, at Miami Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Film Festival and Italian LGBT Film Festival 2015 and a continuous range of international film and TV Screenings on cable TV channels across USA, Asia and Europe.

    Description

The aim of this study was to identify discourses on access to and quality of comprehensive care for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people adopted by doctors working in the Family Health Strategy. This article reflects upon how these discourses influence the provision of healthcare to LGBT population. Fifteen doctors from Uberlândia and Belo Horizonte, in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, participated in the study. The analysis of the interviews was underpinned by the principles of social constructionism and based on the following analytical categories: the “no difference discourse”, “don’t know discourse”, “don’t want discourse”. Insights were gained into how these discourses prompt the silencing of issues related to the health status of LGBT people, alienating them from comprehensive universal healthcare. We conclude that to improve care provision for this population, healthcare providers need to change their approach. In this respect, training is urgently needed to improve the accessibility and delivery of comprehensive health services to LGBT people.

    Description

The LGBTQ+ dating app market is experiencing robust growth, driven by increasing smartphone penetration, rising social acceptance of LGBTQ+ relationships, and a growing desire for inclusive and safe online dating spaces. While precise market sizing data is unavailable, a reasonable estimate based on the existence of numerous established players and consistent media coverage suggests a global market value exceeding $1 billion in 2025. Considering the strong adoption of dating apps among younger generations and an expected CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) in the range of 15-20%, the market is poised for significant expansion. This growth trajectory is further fueled by ongoing technological advancements such as enhanced matching algorithms, improved safety features, and the integration of social media functionalities. The competitive landscape is characterized by both large established players and niche apps catering to specific sub-communities within the LGBTQ+ spectrum. This segmentation suggests opportunities for further market specialization and innovation. However, challenges remain. Concerns about privacy, safety, and data security continue to be significant factors influencing user engagement and market expansion. Regulatory scrutiny around data handling and the prevalence of misinformation or harmful content on some platforms also act as constraints. Navigating these challenges requires continuous improvements in app design, robust moderation strategies, and transparent data handling practices. The increasing adoption of subscription models and in-app purchases, while generating revenue, also requires careful consideration of pricing strategies to ensure broad accessibility and user retention. The success of individual apps will depend on effectively catering to the diverse needs and preferences of the LGBTQ+ community while addressing the overarching concerns of safety, privacy, and inclusivity.

Malta was rated the safest travel destination for members of the LGBT community, according to a 2023 ranking. With 13 points, the European country outperformed Canada and Switzerland - the following safest countries in the list. Out of the 12 best-performing countries that year, eight are located in Europe.

    LGBT rights in Canada

Back in 2005, Canada was the fourth country worldwide to legalize same-sex marriage. The North American nation is in the vanguard of LGBT rights and has passed multiple laws assuring equality for this group, such as allowing adoption by same-sex couples, protecting transgender rights, and banning conversion therapy. Meanwhile, its land neighbor, the United States, had the share of the population that identifies as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender increased steadily between 2012 and 2021.

    Acceptance around the globe

According to a survey conducted in 2021 in 27 countries, opinions on the rights of same-sex couples varied greatly around the world. Western European and American nations were particularly supportive of marriage or, failing that, some form of legal recognition for homosexual couples.

    Description

I examine gubernatorial use of executive orders, and assess how executive action influences statute adoption. I argue that strong governors use executive orders to pursue policy objectives when they perceive legislation as unlikely to pass. Multilevel Event History Analysis of executive orders and statute adoption that protect the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community (LGBT) from 1975-2013 reveals that partisan control of government and intrastate factors influence both forms of policy adoption. Findings support the strategic model that argues executives turn to executive orders when confronting unfavorable legislative conditions, and governors issue protections more when entering office. Legislatures respond to partisan control of the legislature and social characteristics. Further, states that have pro-LGBT executive orders in place are more likely to adopt similar statutes. Findings suggest that stronger governors are more likely to issue executive orders, but it is states with weaker governors that are more likely to adopt legislation.

This qualitative study used 47 Semi-structured interviews to explore the impact of legislative changes, including the Civil Partnership Act (2004), the Employment Equality (Sexual Orientation) Regulations (2003) and the Adoption and Children Act (2002) on the lives of same-sex couples. Key objectives were to explore (a) how effective the legislation was perceived to have been in terms of increasing the sense of social inclusion amongst same-sex couples and reducing discrimination; (b) the views of same-sex couples about the involvement of the state in defining their relationship since the implementation of the legislation. Participants were purposively selected in order to create a diverse sample according to partnership status or intentions in relation to civil partnership; gender; age; parental status; ethnicity; socio-economic status; and geographical location. All those included had at least two years’ experience of being a couple in order to ensure that discussion of circumstances and commitment could facilitate consideration of the legal recognition of the relationship or other family commitments. Fieldwork was conducted between June 2007 and January 2008. Verbatim interview data was comprehensively and systematically analysed using the computer-aided qualitative package FrameWork which uses a matrix based format to allow for the thematic and case based interpretation of data. The research showed that the legislation had a number of positive impacts around improving a sense of social inclusion and reducing discrimination but that the legislation also posed a threat to some participants’ sense of social inclusion. Views of couples towards state involvement in their lives differed according to whether they viewed themselves as different and distinctive from traditional heterosexual couples. Views varied between civil partnership as: an imposition and regulation; ambivalence and trying to make the legislation work personally within a broad legal framework; welcome of Civil Partnership for its equation with traditional marriage.

    Description

Does direct democracy strengthen popular control of public policy in the U.S.? A major challenge in evaluating policy representation is the measurement of state-level public opinion and public policy. Though recent studies of policy responsiveness and congruence have provided improved measures of public opinion using multilevel regression and post-stratification (MRP) techniques, these analyses are limited by their static nature and cross-sectional design. Issue attitudes, unlike more general political orientations, often vary considerably over time. Unless the dynamics of issue-specific public opinion are appropriately incorporated into the analyses, tests of policy responsiveness and congruence may be misleading. Thus, we assess the degree of policy representation in direct democracy states regarding same-sex relationship recognition policies using dynamic models of policy adoption and congruence that employ dynamic MRP estimates of attitudes toward same-sex marriage. We find that direct democracy institutions increase policy responsiveness as well as congruence with issue-specific public opinion.
