Click anywhere on earth to see how the water balance is changing over time. This app is based on data from GLDAS version 2.1, which uses weather observations like temperature, humidity, and rainfall to run the Noah land surface model. This model estimates how much of the rain becomes runoff, how much evaporates, and how much infiltrates into the soil. These output variables, calculated every three hours, are aggregated into monthly averages, giving us a record of the hydrologic cycle going all the way back to January 2000. Because the model is run with 0.25 degree spatial resolution (~30 km), these data should only be used for regional analysis. A specific farm or other small area might experience very different conditions than the region around it, especially because human influences like irrigation are not included. This app can also be seen as a useful template for sharing other climate datasets. If you would like to customize it for your own organization, or use it as a starting point for your own scientific application, the source code is available on github for anyone to use.

The basic idea is an app to supplement the geography and economics lessons at different school levels. The app is tailored to the curriculum (or even better to a specific textbook) to give students an easy start. In case of cooperation with a publisher, the app can be considered as an extension app to a specific textbook series. The content conveyed through the app should aim to repeat/consolidate the learned material and provide further information for interested students. In addition to the material taught in class (e.g. birth rate and population of Austria or migration movements), additional graphics and values about Upper Austria can be consumed. The app should offer the following features: Display of different maps (orthophoto, topographic, satellite) Display of content with map (climate zone(s), rock types, etc.) Display of content without map (e.g. birth rate, age distribution, etc.) on different time levels. In order to create a further incentive and added value for the users, the app also includes mini-games to arouse / strengthen the interest in geography in general. Possible mini-games: Determination of objects on a blind map (state, district, city, district, own position, rivers, mountains, soil type, recording the peculiarity of Austrian landscapes on maps, air and satellite images). Geo quiz The target group of the app are students in the school years after elementary school until graduation (Matura level). Interested students can use the app to delve a little deeper into the subject matter by consuming additional information about the region (state-specific data). However, you can also repeat Austria-wide material (summary of data from all federal states). Especially in the 7th. School level (3 grades) and 11. School level (7 class), where Austria is the focus of attention, the use of the app is suitable. In the tablet classes, it is of course conceivable to use the app in the classroom. However, not only students can benefit from this idea. A textbook publisher could take its first step into digital learning. This publisher would occupy the market early and thus secure a competitive advantage over the competition. In the textbooks, corresponding references to certain contents / teaching units could be accommodated in the app.

The global travel safety app market is experiencing robust growth, driven by increasing concerns about personal safety during travel and the rising adoption of smartphones. The market, estimated at $1.5 billion in 2025, is projected to exhibit a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 15% from 2025 to 2033, reaching approximately $5 billion by 2033. This expansion is fueled by several key factors. Firstly, heightened awareness of travel risks, including terrorism, natural disasters, and petty crime, is prompting travelers to seek proactive safety measures. Secondly, the increasing sophistication of travel safety apps, offering features beyond basic location tracking, such as real-time emergency alerts, SOS buttons, and travel advisories, is driving adoption. Finally, the seamless integration of these apps with existing travel itineraries and booking platforms enhances user experience and convenience. Competitive landscape analysis reveals that several players, including Smart Traveler, bSafe, and GeoSure, are vying for market share, focusing on differentiated features and target audiences. The market is segmented based on app functionality (e.g., location tracking, emergency alerts, medical assistance), pricing models (freemium, subscription), and geographic regions. Growth is anticipated to be particularly strong in regions with high tourist traffic and a rising middle class, increasing their disposable income for travel and associated safety measures. However, challenges remain. Data privacy concerns, the need for consistent internet connectivity, and varying levels of technological literacy across different user demographics pose potential restraints to market expansion. Furthermore, the market's reliance on effective partnerships with local emergency services and authorities for reliable information and response times is crucial for sustained growth. Future trends suggest increased personalization of safety features, integration with AI-powered predictive analytics for risk assessment, and the development of apps catering to specific niche travel segments (e.g., solo female travelers, adventure travelers). This indicates a continued evolution of the travel safety app market and presents opportunities for innovation and expansion.

Tagged image tiles as well as the Faster-RCNN framework for automatic extraction of road intersection points from USGS historical maps of the United States of America. The data and code have been prepared for the paper entitled "Automatic extraction of road intersection points from USGS historical map series using deep convolutional neural networks" submitted to "International Journal of Geographic Information Science". The image tiles have been tagged manually.
