    Description

One of the most pressing challenges in Canadian public health is effective geographic access to healthcare, especially in more sparsely populated regions. Convenient access to hospitals, clinics, pharmacies, and other specialized health providers means better health outcomes and well-being among the population. This is especially challenging in Nova Scotia where doctors are retiring and communities are aging, yet additional infrastructure is not being built fast enough to keep up with changing health needs. Evaluating a community's proximity to the full breadth of healthcare facilities and public health decision-makers and planners is a challenge. GIS can be used to measure access to healthcare in a variety of ways. For example, spatial methods have been developed to measure health network adequacy. GIS is an intuitive tool to measure network adequacy because it combines geographic distances between communities and healthcare services to develop a map of accessibility.

GapMaps GIS data for USA and Canada sourced from Applied Geographic Solutions (AGS) includes an extensive range of the highest quality demographic and lifestyle segmentation products. All databases are derived from superior source data and the most sophisticated, refined, and proven methodologies.

    GIS Data attributes include:

    1. Latest Estimates and Projections The estimates and projections database includes a wide range of core demographic data variables for the current year and 5- year projections, covering five broad topic areas: population, households, income, labor force, and dwellings.

    2. Crime Risk Crime Risk is the result of an extensive analysis of a rolling seven years of FBI crime statistics. Based on detailed modeling of the relationships between crime and demographics, Crime Risk provides an accurate view of the relative risk of specific crime types (personal, property and total) at the block and block group level.

    3. Panorama Segmentation AGS has created a segmentation system for the United States called Panorama. Panorama has been coded with the MRI Survey data to bring you Consumer Behavior profiles associated with this segmentation system.

    4. Business Counts Business Counts is a geographic summary database of business establishments, employment, occupation and retail sales.

    5. Non-Resident Population The AGS non-resident population estimates utilize a wide range of data sources to model the factors which drive tourists to particular locations, and to match that demand with the supply of available accommodations.

    6. Consumer Expenditures AGS provides current year and 5-year projected expenditures for over 390 individual categories that collectively cover almost 95% of household spending.

    7. Retail Potential This tabulation utilizes the Census of Retail Trade tables which cross-tabulate store type by merchandise line.

    Description

The High Resolution Digital Elevation Model (HRDEM) product is derived from airborne LiDAR data (mainly in the south) and satellite images in the north. The complete coverage of the Canadian territory is gradually being established. It includes a Digital Terrain Model (DTM), a Digital Surface Model (DSM) and other derived data. For DTM datasets, derived data available are slope, aspect, shaded relief, color relief and color shaded relief maps and for DSM datasets, derived data available are shaded relief, color relief and color shaded relief maps. The productive forest line is used to separate the northern and the southern parts of the country. This line is approximate and may change based on requirements. In the southern part of the country (south of the productive forest line), DTM and DSM datasets are generated from airborne LiDAR data. They are offered at a 1 m or 2 m resolution and projected to the UTM NAD83 (CSRS) coordinate system and the corresponding zones. The datasets at a 1 m resolution cover an area of 10 km x 10 km while datasets at a 2 m resolution cover an area of 20 km by 20 km. In the northern part of the country (north of the productive forest line), due to the low density of vegetation and infrastructure, only DSM datasets are generally generated. Most of these datasets have optical digital images as their source data. They are generated at a 2 m resolution using the Polar Stereographic North coordinate system referenced to WGS84 horizontal datum or UTM NAD83 (CSRS) coordinate system. Each dataset covers an area of 50 km by 50 km. For some locations in the north, DSM and DTM datasets can also be generated from airborne LiDAR data. In this case, these products will be generated with the same specifications as those generated from airborne LiDAR in the southern part of the country. The HRDEM product is referenced to the Canadian Geodetic Vertical Datum of 2013 (CGVD2013), which is now the reference standard for heights across Canada. Source data for HRDEM datasets is acquired through multiple projects with different partners. Since data is being acquired by project, there is no integration or edgematching done between projects. The tiles are aligned within each project. The product High Resolution Digital Elevation Model (HRDEM) is part of the CanElevation Series created in support to the National Elevation Data Strategy implemented by NRCan. Collaboration is a key factor to the success of the National Elevation Data Strategy. Refer to the “Supporting Document” section to access the list of the different partners including links to their respective data.

Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry North America Conference 2014 (Vancouver, Canada) Poster presentation. Poster Abstract: GIS Layer of Standardized Fish Mercury Concentrations Across Canada Now Available A national GIS layer of standardized fish mercury (Hg) data would be useful to the scientific community for many types of spatial analyses and modeling. To produce this national GIS layer for Canada, we first assembled all available fish Hg data across the country and did quality-assurance checks, which resulted in 387,872 fish Hg records. We removed all records from sites with known point-source Hg inputs or from hydroelectric reservoirs. The resulting dataset contained 231,063 records from 3547 locations across Canada from 1967-2010. We used this data and the USGS National Descriptive Model for Mercury in Fish (NDMMF) to estimate Hg concentrations in a standard-length (12-cm) whole yellow perch for each sampling location. The resulting geocoded dataset of standardized fish Hg concentrations is called the Fish Mercury Datalayer for Canada, or FIMDAC, and is now available to the scientific community. FIMDAC can be used for Hg eco-risk assessment, modeling of Hg dynamics and bioaccumulation in aquatic ecosystems, spatial analysis of Hg biogeochemistry, and as baseline for modeling future Hg management scenarios and their environmental consequences. FIMDAC is not appropriate for human health risk assessment, temporal trend analysis or for setting human consumption guidelines. Description

This GIS dataset portrays the distribution of glacial landforms in Alberta, based on the compilation of existing government survey mapping and research literature, supplemented by new analysis of remote sensing data. It is the dataset that was used to create Alberta Geological Survey Map 604 (Glacial Landforms of Alberta) using an intermediate step of reducing the density of closely spaced line segments to make the features suitable for map production at 1:1 000 000 scale. This dataset contains the original line features without any cartographic generalization. The data were created in geodatabase format and output for public distribution in shapefile format.
