    Description

    Public urban green spaces are important for the urban quality of life. Still, comprehensive open data sets on urban green spaces are not available for most cities. As open and globally available data sets the potential of Sentinel-2 satellite imagery and OpenStreetMap (OSM) data for urban green space mapping is high but limited due to their respective uncertainties. Sentinel-2 imagery cannot distinguish public from private green spaces and its spatial resolution of 10 meters fails to capture fine-grained urban structures, while in OSM green spaces are not mapped consistently and with the same level of completeness everywhere. To address these limitations we propose to fuse these data sets under explicit consideration of their uncertainties. The Sentinel-2 derived Normalized Difference Vegetation Index was fused with OSM data using the Dempster-Shafer theory to enhance the detection of small vegetated areas. The distinction between public and private green spaces was achieved using a Bayesian hierarchical model and OSM data. The analysis was performed based on land use parcels derived from OSM data and tested for the city of Dresden, Germany. The overall accuracy of the final map of public urban green spaces was 95\%, which was mainly influenced by the uncertainty of the public accessibility model.

    Description

    We collected open and publicly available data resources from the web from administrative, county- or state-level institutions in the United States and integrated and harmonized cadastral parcel data, tax assessment data, and building footprint data for 33 counties, where building footprint data and building construction year information was available. The result of this effort is a unique dataset which we call the Multi-Temporal Building Footprint Dataset for 33 U.S. Counties (MTBF-33). MTBF-33 contains over 6.2 million building footprints including their construction year, and is available in ESRI Shapefile format, and in two spatial reference systems: (a) WGS84 (EPSG:4326), and (b) NAD1983 Albers Conic Equal Area Projection (EPSG:5070; aka ESRI:102039 or SR-ORG:7480), organized per county. We compared the MTBF-33 dataset quantitatively to other building footprint data sources, achieving an overall F-1 score of 0.93. Moreover, we compared the MTBF-33 dataset qualitatively to urban extents from historical maps and find high levels of agreement. The MTBF-33 dataset can be used to support historical building stock assessments, to derive retrospective depictions of built-up areas from 1900 to 2015, at fine spatial and temporal grain and can be used for data validation purposes, or to train statistical learning approaches aiming to extract historical information on human settlements from remote sensing data, historical maps, or similar data sources.

    Description

    Abstract: We present a detailed geomorphological map (1:5000-scale) of a middle mountainous area in Jena, Germany. To overcome limitations associated with traditional field-based approaches and to extend the possibility of manually digital mapping in a structural way, we propose an approach using geographic information systems (GIS) and high-resolution digital data. The geomorphological map features were extracted by manually interpreting and analyzing the combination of different data sources using light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data. A combination of topographic and geological maps, digital orthophotos (DOPs), Google Earth images, field investigations, and derivatives from digital terrain models (DTMs) revealed that it is possible to generate and present the geomorphologic features involved in classical mapping approaches. We found that LiDAR-DTM and land surface parameters (LSPs) can provide better results when incorporating the visual interpretation of multidirectional hillshade and LSP composite maps. The genesis of landforms can be readily identified, and findings enabled us to systematically delineate landforms and geomorphological process domains. Although our approach provides a cost effective, objective, and reproducible alternative for the classical approach, we suggest that further use of digital data should be undertaken to support analysis and applications.

    Description

    This is a feature class outlining Palm Oil Plantations in Ucayali Province in Peru. A small team of faculty and student researchers hand digitized polygons delineating palm oil plantations in Ucayali, Peru in support of SERVIR Amazonia goals. GIS experts used high-resolution (< 1 m) optical observations to identify areas of oil palm presence across different conditions (young vs. mature, industrial vs. small-scale). This hand-digitized oil palm presence map will serve as a calibration / validation dataset for an automated classification model using remote sensing observations. This task presented numerous challenges, namely the availability of cloud-free, high resolution imagery. Polygons were digitized from numerous imagery datasets including mosaiced basemap imagery from Maxar and Planet Scope. Whenever the high resolution Maxar imagery was available, it was used. In some cases, we were unable to procure imagery in the time frame. We provide a training document describing our methodology and process in QGIS, an open source geospatial software package so other researchers could repeat our methods at later times or different geographic extents. The major variables in our study were the spatial extents of the palm oil plantations, whether they were open or closed canopy, and the imagery data source

    ben-ge/ERA-5: BigEarthNet Extended with Geographical and Environmental Data/Environmental Data

    M. Mommert, N. Kesseli, J. Hanna, L. Scheibenreif, D. Borth, B. Demir, "ben-ge: Extending BigEarthNet with Geographical and Environmental Data", IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, Pasadena, USA, 2023.

    ben-ge is a multimodal dataset for Earth observation (https://github.com/HSG-AIML/ben-ge) that serves as an extension to the BigEarthNet dataset. ben-ge complements the Sentinel-1/2 data contained in BigEarthNet by providing additional data modalities:

    • elevation data extracted from the Copernicus Digital Elevation Model GLO-30;
    • land-use/land-cover data extracted from ESA Worldcover;
    • climate zone information extracted from Beck et al. 2018;
    • environmental data concurrent with the Sentinel-1/2 observations from the ERA-5 global reanalysis;
    • a seasonal encoding.

    This archive contains the environmental data of ben-ge, which were extracted from the ERA-5 global reanalysis.

    Data

    Weather data at the time of observation (temperature at 2 m above the ground, relative humidity, wind vectors at 10 m above the ground) are extracted from the ERA-5 global reanalysis (https://cds.climate.copernicus.eu/cdsapp#!/dataset/reanalysis-era5-pressure-levels) for the pressure level at the mean elevation of the observed scene and the time of observation (separately queried for Sentinel-1/2 observations).

    Environmental data are available in the file ben-ge_era-5.csv. For each patch, identified through the Sentinel-2 patch_id or the corresponding Sentinel-1 patch id patch_id_s1, the file contains the following parameters: * atmpressure_level: atmospheric pressure level at which parameters have been queried [mbar] * temperature_s2: temperature 2m above ground at the time of the Sentinel-2 observation [K] * temperature_s1: temperature 2m above ground at the time of the Sentinel-1 observation [K] * wind-u_s2: eastward component of the wind, at a height of 10 meters above the surface of the Earth at the time of the Sentinel-2 observation [m/s] * wind-u_s1: eastward component of the wind, at a height of 10 meters above the surface of the Earth at the time of the Sentinel-1 observation [m/s] * wind-v_s2: northward component of the wind, at a height of 10 meters above the surface of the Earth at the time of the Sentinel-2 observation [m/s] * wind-v_s1: northward component of the wind, at a height of 10 meters above the surface of the Earth at the time of the Sentinel-2 observation [m/s] * relhumidity_s2: relative humidity at the time of the Sentinel-2 observation [%] * relhumidity_s1: relative humidity at the time of the Sentinel-1 observation [%]

    as extracted from the ERA-5 global reanalysis (https://cds.climate.copernicus.eu/cdsapp#!/dataset/reanalysis-era5-pressure-levels) for the patch location. Please see the corresponding documentation for details.

    Relevant meta data for the ben-ge dataset are compiled in the file ben-ge_meta.csv. This file resides on the root level of this archive and contains the following data for each patch: * patch_id: the Sentinel-2 patch id, which plays a central role for cross-referencing different data modalities for individual patches; * patch_id_s1: the Sentinel-1 patch id for this specific patch; * timestamp_s2: the timestamp for the Sentinel-2 observation; * timestamp_s1: the timestamp for the Sentinel-1 observation; * season_s2: the seasonal encoding (see below) for the time of the Sentinel-2 observation; * season_s1: the seasonal encoding (see below) for the time of the Sentinel-1 observation; * lon: longitude (WGS-84) of the center of the patch [degrees]; * lat: latitude (WGS-84) of the center of the patch [degrees]; * climatezone: integer value indicating the climate zone based on Beck et al. 2018 (see below for details).
