    Distribution of surficial geologic units as shown by detailed reconnaissance mapping at 1:24,000 scale in parts of northeastern Pennsylvania. Data is added as new maps are prepared for publication. Features that have not yet been formally published will have “Provisional” in their STATUS attribute, while features that have been formally published will have a value of “Final.” Both the attributes and geometry of provisional features are subject to change.

    The Digital Geologic-GIS Map of Fayette County, Pennsylvania is composed of GIS data layers and GIS tables, and is available in the following GRI-supported GIS data formats: 1.) a 10.1 file geodatabase (faco_geology.gdb), and a 2.) Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) geopackage. The file geodatabase format is supported with a 1.) ArcGIS Pro map file (.mapx) file (faco_geology.mapx) and individual Pro layer (.lyrx) files (for each GIS data layer), as well as with a 2.) 10.1 ArcMap (.mxd) map document (faco_geology.mxd) and individual 10.1 layer (.lyr) files (for each GIS data layer). Upon request, the GIS data is also available in ESRI 10.1 shapefile format. Contact Stephanie O'Meara (see contact information below) to acquire the GIS data in these GIS data formats. In addition to the GIS data and supporting GIS files, three additional files comprise a GRI digital geologic-GIS dataset or map: 1.) A GIS readme file (fone_geology_gis_readme.pdf), 2.) the GRI ancillary map information document (.pdf) file (fone_frhi_geology.pdf) which contains geologic unit descriptions, as well as other ancillary map information and graphics from the source map(s) used by the GRI in the production of the GRI digital geologic-GIS data for the park, and 3.) a user-friendly FAQ PDF version of the metadata (faco_geology_metadata_faq.pdf).     From the site: “The Geologic Atlas of the United States is a set of 227 folios published by the U.S. Geological Survey between 1894 and 1945. Each folio includes both topographic and geologic maps for each quad represented in that folio, as well as description of the basic and economic geology of the area. The Geologic Atlas collection is maintained by the Map & GIS Library. The repository interface with integrated Yahoo! Maps was developed by the Digital Initiatives -- Research & Technology group within the TAMU Libraries using the Manakin interface framework on top of the DSpace digital repository software.

    Additional files of each map are available for download for use in GIS or Google Earth. A tutorial is provided which describes how to download theses files.”

    Description

    The 1980 Pennsylvania state geologic map (Berg and others, 1980) shows the areal distribution of 194 bedrock geologic units. The units range in geologic age from Quaternary to Precambrian and encompass a wide variety of lithologies. The map was compiled and published in a transverse mercator projection at 1:250,000 scale. The two digital datasets include 195 geologic units, which, for the most part, closely correspond to those shown on the 1980 map. The datasets were prepared using ArcInfo software and are provided in a geographic coordinate system (units in decimal degrees). Although it is possible to portray digital data at any scale, the geologic formational contacts, faults, and dikes represented in these datasets are not intended to be used at any scale finer than 1:250,000.

    The Digital Geologic-GIS Map of Eisenhower National Historic Site, Pennsylvania is composed of GIS data layers and GIS tables, and is available in the following GRI-supported GIS data formats: 1.) a 10.1 file geodatabase (eise_geology.gdb), and a 2.) Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) geopackage. The file geodatabase format is supported with a 1.) ArcGIS Pro map file (.mapx) file (eise_geology.mapx) and individual Pro layer (.lyrx) files (for each GIS data layer), as well as with a 2.) 10.1 ArcMap (.mxd) map document (eise_geology.mxd) and individual 10.1 layer (.lyr) files (for each GIS data layer). Upon request, the GIS data is also available in ESRI 10.1 shapefile format. Contact Stephanie O'Meara (see contact information below) to acquire the GIS data in these GIS data formats. In addition to the GIS data and supporting GIS files, three additional files comprise a GRI digital geologic-GIS dataset or map: 1.) A GIS readme file (gett_eise_geology_gis_readme.pdf), 2.) the GRI ancillary map information document (.pdf) file (gett_eise_geology.pdf) which contains geologic unit descriptions, as well as other ancillary map information and graphics from the source map(s) used by the GRI in the production of the GRI digital geologic-GIS data for the park, and 3.) a user-friendly FAQ PDF version of the metadata (eise_geology_metadata_faq.pdf).     Description

    This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Data Release provides a digital geospatial database for the bedrock geologic map of the Beans Cove and Hyndman quadrangles and part of the Fairhope quadrangle (de Witt, 1974). Attribute tables and geospatial features (points, lines, and polygons) conform to the Geologic Map Schema (GeMS, 2020) and represent the geologic map as published in the Miscellaneous Investigations Series Map I-801 with no adjustments made to any of the map data. The Description of Map Units (DMU) summarizes descriptions of the same lithostratigraphic units from adjacent maps published by the same author in the area and is expanded from the minimal text published on the original map plate. Some revisions to stratigraphic nomenclature were made to conform with modern usage. When symbolized according to the accompanying Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) style file, this data release presents the geologic map as shown on the published map by de Witt.     Description

    The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) and the PA Geologic Survey has 101 sites in the PNHP database. Ultimately, many of the 514 features described in Outstanding Scenic Geological Features of Pennsylvania (Environmental Geology Report 7, Parts 1 and 2) will be included in the PNHP list. Both of the scenic feature volumes are out of print, but they may be borrowed from or viewed in the Survey library or possibly one of our repository libraries.Two of the 101 sites are now considered "extinct."
