A protected area is a clearly defined geographical space, recognized, dedicated and managed, through legal or other effective means, to achieve the long term conservation of nature with associated ecosystem services and cultural values. This dashboard shows the protected areas we have in the 24 countries covered in Eastern and Southern Africa. The data is pulled from the protected planet which is the world database of protected area. The dashboard is hosted at the Regional Centre of Excellence for Biodiversity, Forests and Seascape Ecosystems Management in Eastern and Southern Africa. The RCoEs will enable knowledge and informed decisions in responding to megatrends including climate change, environmental degradation, population growth, technological development and diversification of security threats in Sub-Saharan Africa. The overall objective of the project is to ensure forests, biodiversity and seascape ecosystems in Eastern and Southern Africa are sustainably managed and continue providing ecosystem services and contribute to the well-being of the populations, by providing improved, regular and updated information for informed decision-making. This dashboard has the Forest Cover trend for Kenya from 1990 to current. It has a forest cover tracker that shows the current forest cover of the country against the 30% target in 2033. We have also added the projection of the forest cover trend based on the 15 billion trees country wide initiative that the Government wants to achieve 10 years i.e. 2033

Objective #WeMapToSolve To improve the interpretation of earth observation data and develop the confidence on earth observation derived information in decision making. This will be undertaken in two way i.e.Developing a consistent and comprehensive common and shared geographical database at regional level in using open source data.Creating agro-ecological zonings by weighted overlay (land cover, land use / change, climatology, soils, demography, limits…).Dataset to be availedAdministrative DataSlopes, watersheds & contoursWater bodies - lakes, ponds, rivers, wetlandsTransportation network - roads, railways, airstripsSettlement - town, villages, Population, demographicParks and natural reservesOthers - Land cover, Ecosystems, RainfallTarget End UsersRegional organizations, universities and research institutions, international organizations, national mapping organizations, agriculture, forest and environment agencies.
