Interesting, largely unexplored data analysis and information retrieval opportunities exist for GIS data. In their current form, traditional data usage patterns for data persisted in shapefiles or spatially-enabled relational databases are limited. Opportunities exist to achieve ESIP’s Winter 2019 theme of ‘increasing the use and value of Earth science data and information’ by transforming geospatial data from their original formats into their Resource Description Framework (RDF) manifestation. This work establishes an innovative workflow enabling the publication for Geospatial data persisted in geospatially enabled databases (PostGIS and MonetDB), ESRI shapefiles and XML, GML, KML, JSON, GeoJSON and CSV documents as graphs of linked open geospatial data. This affords the capability to identify implicit connections between related data that wasn't previously linked e.g. automating the detection of features present within large hydrography datasets as well as smaller regional examples and resolving features in a consistent fashion. This previously unavailable capability is achieved through the use of a semantic technology stack which leverages well matured standards within the Semantic Web space such as RDF as the data model, GeoSPARQL as the data access language and International Resource Identifier’s (IRI) for uniquely identifying and referencing entities such as rivers, streams and other water bodies. In anticipation of NASA’s forthcoming Surface Water Ocean Topography (SWOT – https://swot.jpl.nasa.gov) mission, which once launched in 2021 will make NASA’s first-ever global survey of Earth’s surface water, this work uses Hydrography data products (USGS’s National Hydrography Dataset and other topically relevant examples) as the topic matter. The compelling result is a new, innovative data analysis and information retrieval capability which will increases the use and value of Earth science data (GIS) and information. This presentation was given at the Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP) Winter Meeting in January 2019.

This paper performs, describes, and evaluates a comparison of seven software tools (ArcGIS Pro, GRASS GIS, SAGA GIS, CitySim, Ladybug, SimStadt and UMEP) to calculate solar irradiation. The analysis focuses on data requirements, software usability, and accuracy simulation output. The use case for the comparison is solar irradiation on building surfaces, in particular on roofs. The research involves collecting and preparing spatial and weather data. Two test areas - the Santana district in S ̃ao Paulo, Brazil, and the Heino rural area in Raalte, the Netherlands - were selected. In both cases, the study area encompasses the vicinity of a weather station. Therefore, the meteorological data from these stations serve as ground truth for the validation of the simulation results. We create several models (raster and vector) to meet the diverse input requirements. We present our findings and discuss the output from the software tools from both quantitative and qualitative points of view. Vector-based simulation models offer better results than raster-based ones. However, they have more complex data requirements. Future research will focus on evaluating the quality of the simulation results on vertical and tilted surfaces as well as the calculation of direct and diffuse solar irradiation values for vector-based methods.

The Automated Geospatial Watershed Assessment (AGWA) tool is a GIS-based hydrologic modeling tool that uses commonly available GIS data layers to fully parameterize, execute, and spatially visualize results for the RHEM, KINEROS2, KINEROS-OPUS, SWAT2000, and SWAT2005 watershed runoff and erosion models. Accommodating novice to expert GIS users, it is designed to be used by watershed, water resource, land use, and resource managers and scientists investigating the hydrologic impacts of land-cover/land-use change in small watershed to basin-scale studies. AGWA is currently available as AGWA 1.5 for ArcView 3.x, AGWA 2.x for ArcGIS 9.x, and AGWA 3.X for ArcGIS 10.x. Planning and assessment in land and water resource management are evolving from simple, local-scale problems toward complex, spatially explicit regional ones. Such problems have to be addressed with distributed models that can compute runoff and erosion at different spatial and temporal scales. The extensive data requirements and the difficult task of building input parameter files, however, have long represented an obstacle to the timely and cost-effective use of such complex models by resource managers. The USDA- ARS Southwest Watershed Research Center, in cooperation with the U.S. EPA Office of Research and Development Landscape Ecology Branch, the University of Arizona, and the University of Wyoming, has developed a GIS tool to facilitate this process. A geographic information system (GIS) provides the framework within which spatially-distributed data are collected and used to prepare model input files and evaluate model results. AGWA uses widely available standardized spatial datasets that can be obtained via the internet. The data are used to develop input parameter files for two watershed runoff and erosion models: KINEROS2 and SWAT.
